Skype fixes security holes, throws in 3G calling to make it up to us

Fear not, people of Earth. Your weeklong national Skype nightmare is over. The essential communications app has plugged that security hole we didn't actually sweat too much over -- the one where some of your data, and your contacts data, was stored insecurely. And to show there are no hard feelings, tucked into this morning's update is "Calling over your 3G connection is available worldwide - now including the US."  This opens up 3G calling to everyone, not just Verizon customers like we've seen so far.

Now doesn't that make you feel better? Snag the update in the Android Market, and we've got download links after the break.

Update: And Skype's chimed in, saying on its security blog:

We have had no reported examples of any 3rd party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely. Please rest assured that we do take your privacy and security very seriously and we sincerely apologise for any concern this issue may have caused.

LG G2X available in T-Mobile stores today

The LG G2X will be available on T-Mobile store shelves when stores open today.  The G2X has been a web exclusive for the past few days, but if you're the type who needs to hold a phone in your hands before you fork over $200 and two years, today is your day.  A Tegra 2, front facing camera, 4 inch screen, and stock Android 2.2 make this phone quite attractive to many (including yours truly) so we're all expecting big things from this one.  You'll find the G2X forums are a great place to share thoughts, ideas, and even problems with LG's latest offering.  I'll see you there!

T-Mobile G-Slate now available for $529 with contract

As of April 20 (that's today) the G-Slate is available from T-Mobile for $529 with a two-year agreement and after a $100 rebate.  The G-Slate packs a Tegra 2 CPU, an 8.9 inch screen, 32 GB of internal storage and has the ability to play and record video in 3D.  T-Mobile also reminds us that the G-Slate "wins hands down on price and network speed" when compared to the competition when comparably spec'd.

Online ordering should be available soon, and once stores open in the morning the G-Slate should be on the shelves.  Will it live up to the hype?  That's the real question.  Discuss it in the forums.  [T-Mobile]

Sony Ericsson's 2011 Q1 results announced

Sony Ericsson Press Release Alert

Sony Ericsson posted their first-quarter earnings for 2011 earlier today and despite lower sales figures, their outlook is positive. Total revenue dropped 19% year-over-year to 1,145 million Euros (~$1.64 billion USD) down from 1,405 million Euros. However, the average selling price for devices increased from 134 to 141 Euros (~$202 USD). This increase was due to a move away from feature phones and towards smartphones.

With the releases of the Xperia PLAY, Xperia arc, and Xperia neo towards the end of Q1, the rest of 2011 looks to be promising for Sony Ericsson. Another factor that may play a role in SE's success is providing an unlockable bootloader on their phones, a move that's challenging where the rest of the industry seems to be headed.

Some noteworthy highlights are included with the full press release after the break. [Sony Ericsson]

Droid Landing's back -- prepare the search!

Droid Landing

Following in the proud steps of the Droid 2 R2-D2 and the Droid X before that, it looks like Verizon is kicking off it's latest cross-country, Droid-finding bonanza.

The latest tweet from @DroidLanding -- it's back! -- tipped us off to the mystery-in-progress, but not much else. The message is as uninformative and cryptic as ever, but it's good to know that "field agents await instructions."

So what phone are we looking for? The Droid X2? The Droid Charge? Droid Incredible 2? It's hard to say at this point, but we know the jig is up, the game is on. So grab your pocket protectors and sharpen up your sleuthing skills, because it's about time we found those Droids we were looking for. [@DroidLanding] Thanks, @holmesbrandon!

Excuse me, Australian readers. If you're looking for a distraction from kangaroo boxing and boomerang throwing, you'll be happy to know that as soon as May 2011, Telstra will be launching the Motorola XOOM.

Exact pricing and launch dates are scant, but if it's your cup of tea, the full presser is after the break.

And for those planning on picking up a XOOM, I'm sure I don't have to remind you, but be sure not to let the dingos take it. [Motorola]

Nexus S case review: Seidio Innocase Active X

Seidio Innocase Active X for the Nexus S

The Seidio Innocase Active X is a case for the Nexus S is built like a tank and perfect for protecting your phone while you're out and about.  It's two-piece design really wraps your phone up well, and while it adds in a bit of bulkiness, it fits really well and doesn't take away from the unique styling that some of us really love about our Nexus S -- myself included.

The case consists of a flexible rubber polymer skin and a hard skeleton that holds the skin in place and protects each corner of your phone from bumps and falls.  Preliminary testing using clumsy hands and parking lots or hardwood floors have been successful :)

It's easy to put on and take back off, and your ports and controls are just as easy to use as they would be without a case, with the USB connector and the headphone jack being cut-out in the rubber skin, and the skin itself designed to operate the power and volume switches via raised spots on the case.  It works just fine.

Also available is the matching Seidio Active X holster, which holds your Nexus S face-in right on your belt or clipped to your pocket.  It's easy to get the phone in and out of it, and the clip swivels (and locks into place) in six different angles to keep things comfortable.

A lot of Android phones pass through our hands here, but the Nexus S is my personal phone.  I carry it daily, and highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a way to protect their Nexus S.  You can grab the Seidio Innocase Active X case in the Android Central Store for $27.95, or as a bundle with the matching holster for $46.40.  More pictures are after the break.

LauncherPro 0.8.5 is now available on the Android Market, bringing bug fixes, reduced memory usage and widget skinning support to the popular homescreen replacement. Android Quick App: Pinball HD for NVIDIA Tegra 2-optimized devices

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Here's another Tegra 2-optimized game that's coming down the pike. Pinball HD is, well, it's a pinball game. It's a pinball game with some extremely fluid and intricate graphics. But at the end of the day, it's a pinball game. And that's not a bad thing -- it's pinball's simplicity that's allowed it to span the decades.

Anyohoo. Pinball HD has a trio of tables, and those tables have story lines. Unfortunately in our review edition the story lines either were missing or unplayable in demo mode. But you'll get the idea.

We've gone back and forth on whether we prefer Pinball HD on a tablet or a phone. Obviously you'll get a different experience on a 10-inch device compared to a 4-inch device. But PinBall HD runs flawlessly on either, a testament to the Tegra 2 platform, and it's a game you should check out when it becomes available in the coming weeks.

Droid Bionic not canceled, Motorola says, may slip to the third quarter

Motorola Droid Bionic

Been here before, haven't we? Despite unsourced, unfounded and generally un-everything rumors, people keep insisting that the Motorola Droid Bionic has been killed off. Not so, a Motorola spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires' Roger Cheng.

It's been more than three months since the Droid Bionic was announced at CES (see our hands-on) and since then has been tucked neatly out of sight. But the unnamed Motorola official tells Cheng "Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience." A second-quarter launch is still possible (we've heard as much), but a push to the third-quarter apparently is possible, too. That either means stuff ain't ready, ain't good enough, or they're still figuring out what the heck to do.

But canceled, it is not. At least not yet. [WSJ via Android Central Forums]
