Vizio Android tablet

Vizio, the company known for its TVs and Blu-Ray players, is set to unveil its first phone as well as a tablet, both to be based on Android.

The phone is said to be called the Via Phone and will sport a 4-inch touchscreen, 5MP rear camera and a front-facing camera. The tablet reportedly will be 8 inches, will also have a front-facing camera, and have three speakers for sound.

That's probably the tablet Vizio teased ever so briefly at the start of the Rose Bowl on Saturday -- check out the video after the break. [via Engadget] It's claimed that Vizio will discuss these products on Monday, ahead of CES, but will also have product announcements during the official show. It will be a crazy week with phones and tablets galore. Stay tuned! [via WSJ

The unsourced rumor du jour is that Motorola and AT&T will be announcing the Motorola Olympus during CES next week. The long rumored 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor has been making its rounds on the web for the past few months now. And that's basically it, not much is known about the device. Judging by the few leaked photos, the phone looks like it will sport a screen larger than 3.7 inches.

It's also worth mentioning that this is the first time we'll see Motorola bringing a high-end Android powered phone to another carrier outside of Verizon. Head into the Rumored Devices forum to see what others are chatting about. [via IntoMobile]

Update: We've independently heard that the Olympus definitely is in testing on AT&T, with a 4-inch screen with 480x854 resolution.

Archos 70 Android tablet

Archos today announced a monster of an Android tablet -- the Archos 70. It's available now, and these specs are, shall we say, fairly monstrous.

  • Android 2.2
  • 250-gigabyte hard drive
  • Processor:  ARM Cortex A8 @ 1 GHz
  • 7-inch TFT LCD display at 800x480
  • Wifi
  • Dimensions: 7.91x4.49x0.55 inches
  • Weight: 14 ounces
  • 720p video playback

We say fairly monstrous because that screen resolution is a bit disappointing. But being able to dual boot into Linux, Meego or Windows is pretty awesome. Also pretty awesome: A price tag of $350. Got a feeling we know a few people who are going to pick this one up, and we're definitely going to check this out next week at CES. More info's at the source link, and the full presser's after the break. [Archos]

HTC Thunderbolt 4G

Ah ha! Eagle-eyed commenter rabaker07 deduced that the URL from the HTC Thunderbolt 4G (that's the name we're using today, anyway) advertisement we showed you yesterday was a little off. (Hey, not our fault.) Plug in a quick "us" into the URL, and you get an e-mail signup page that has the caped phone and the "first to 4G, again" slogan. Just a week and a half to go, folks, and we'll get the lowdown. [HTC]

Vidtonic Android-powered TV

You DIYers are gonna love this. Vidtonic's promising a "homebrew" hardware/software development kit to help bring apps to the TV screen. Yeah, it's Android-based IPTV. Like Google TV, we assume, but a little more fringe. With the kit you get a TV housing, cables, a 1080p LCD panel, power supply and ARM/DSP motherboard, along with the software tools to get your app up and running.

How usable will this be? And will it be more than a cool hobbyist device? We'll just have to check it out and see for ourselves, won't we? Check out the full presser after the break.

Motorola Tablet

In case you missed the teaser last week, Motorola's sending out e-mails touting the upcoming Honeycomb-based tablet it'll show off at CES. Needless to say, we're not getting tired of watching this video just yet, and so you can find it again after the break. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

NEC at CES

To say that there's going to be a boatload of Android tablets in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks would be the understatement of the year. We know Motorola's bringing the Honeycomb thunder, and it appears that Japanese staple NEC is going to have more than its share of the little green guy.

To wit:

  • Dual-screen Cloud Communicator Tablet
  • Single-screen Cloud Communicator Tablet
  • Personal Products' Mobile Notebook
  • "Andronavi" marketplace, including Japanese Manga and photography. (More on that at us.andronavi.com.)

So, yeah, there's going to be a wee bit of Android at CES. We strap it on in two weeks, folks. Full NEC presser is after the break.
