Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 03 February 2010

The folks at AndoridSpin managed to get their hands on the Motorola Devour apparently right as Verizon announced it. And while we don't get a look at anything actually running on the screen, they apparently were told that the Devour "has some tricks up its sleeves," including some sort of IR integration with...

And yet another weak punch at Verizon by its old nemesis, AT&T

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 28 January 2010

Seriously, AT&T, it's time to give it a rest. You're getting as bad as Apple with these "facts." Woman looks at a Motorola Droid and says, "What is this?" Why, it's the Motorola Droid. It's what's propelling Android's numbers month after month. "Where are all my apps?"...

Verizon's FiOS DVR sports Android app

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 18 January 2010

Sure, Verizon's FiOS service has blazing fast Internet speeds and competitive TV DVR. But the coolest thing has got to be its Android app, which lets you browse listings and program your FiOS DVR via your phone. Parental controls also on at hand, as is information about how much free space is left on your box.

Now slap in some Slingbox-like streaming capability, and we'll swoon all the way to sign-up...

Verizon Changing Rate Plans, 3G Smartphones Require Data Plan

Casey Chan News Friday, 15 January 2010

It looks like Verizon, notorious for their expensive rate plans, will soon overhaul their rate plans. Some changes will only take place in name only but others such as unlimited plans will actually see a significant price drop. Overall, it seems easier to understand (a good thing) but we're not sure if non-unlimited, smartphone users will actually be affected. The details, as we see them:

Nexus One Coming to Verizon

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 05 January 2010

What IS surprising is that the Nexus One is headed to Verizon. Yes, the Nexus One Phone with Verizon Wireless will be available....

How to manually update your Droid Eris

Phil Nickinson News Friday, 11 December 2009

Good news and bad news here, boys and girls. The good news is that the update being pushed out to the Droid Eris can be applied manually. The bad news is that what we have is a full-on ROM flash and not a mere update, so your phone will be reset to zero. For some of us, not a big deal. For others, a huge deal.

Anyhoo,...

Having not even finished rolling out the Android 2.0.1 OTA update for the Droid, BGR is hearing that there'll be another Droid-specific OTA update come late January 2010. Details are slim regarding what it fixes but it kind of, sort of fits the timeline for an Android 2.1 update, right? Staying hopeful is what we do.

Those of you (and us) not patient enough to wait for Verizon to roll out the 2.0.1 update on its own are in luck. Not only can the Motorola Droid now be rooted, the incremental update to the Android OS can be applied manually, and it's as easy as applying a couple of zip files.

First up is the update, which comes to us

It's Official: Buy A DROID Or DROID Eris Get A DROID Eris Free

Casey Chan News Friday, 04 December 2009

Though it isn't quite as beautiful as a complete 'buy one, get one free' deal, it's pretty darn close. Verizon has confirmed that from Friday, December 4th to Monday, December 7th, users who buy a Motorola DROID or HTC DROID Eris will be eligible to receive a free DROID Eris (with rate plan, of course). The DROID Eris, which has plenty of fans, is a wonderful phone that...

DROID Isn't a Princess, It's A Robot

Casey Chan News Thursday, 03 December 2009

Verizon is continuing its DROID ad onslaught with this latest spot that claims that the DROID is not a princess but a robot, "a phone that trades hairdo's for can do". It seems to us that Verizon is embracing the hard angles and industrial design and strategically positioning the DROID for the male market. The...

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 01 December 2009

If you want to wear your phone allegiance on your sleeve, it looks like you literally can. Verizon is reportedly sending out the shirt above to some customers who have purchased the DROID. We were completely unaware that Verizon was giving out shirts to turn folks into walking advertisements but hey, a $100 million dollar ad campaign is so much more than just commercials and print ads.

If anyone has details on how to get one of these Droid Does T-Shirts...

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 25 November 2009

Um, wait what? According to statistics from YouGov's BrandIndex (who?), Motorola has just passed Apple in brand loyalty among men ages 18 and up. This coincides with the launch of the Motorola DROID so perhaps those terminator inspired ads from Verizon really worked.

It's pretty amazing to see Motorola, a company that took 5 years to deliver...

More Info & Video Hands On Of Saygus V1 Vphone

Casey Chan News Thursday, 12 November 2009

The mysterious V1 Vphone made by the even more mysterious Saygus just got a little less mysterious (which is a good thing, kind of). Saygus execs say that the V1 Vphone will be available to Verizon customers but won't actually be supported by Verizon--so basically you'll have to trust Saygus enough to come through with quality, support, warranty, etc in the V1 Vphone.

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 11 November 2009

The Motorola DROID has all the makings of a success story. Analysts are estimating the total units moved in the first weekend to be over 100,000 since Verizon had 200,000 units in stock and most stores sold more than half of their allotment. Though these definitely aren't...

Droid Day has come and gone but there's still a lot of DROID news to catch up on, here's the latest:

Wirefly Selling DROID for $129.99 & DROID Eris for $29.99

We don't think you can find a better deal for the DROID than Wirefly's current DROID for $129.99 and DROID Eris for $29.99. It's only been three days since launch so to find it for 40% off is a complete steal. If you haven't bought your DROID yet and were...

Motorola DROID Camera Test

Casey Chan Featured Sunday, 08 November 2009

One of the features we were most looking forward in the DROID was the 5-megapixel autofocus camera. After having middling experiences with previous Android smartphone cameras, we were very hopeful that the DROID would buck the disappointing trend. But even using Android 2.0's updated camera interface to push out 5-megapixel pictures, the results were, well, a mixed bag.

We decided to let you guys compare a few shots we took with...

HTC Droid Eris Photo Gallery

Dieter Bohn Smartphones Friday, 06 November 2009

Sincerely, we like the understated looks of the Eris. Plain and simple isn't always plain, if you catch our drift. Plus: there are subtle white flecks on the matted-black, soft-touch paint here. Don't worry, it's not Edward-the-sparkly-vampire level sparkle. As we said: it's subtle, we like it.

More photos after the break, including some head-to-...

Google Shows DROID Love the Only Way it Knows, On Its Homepage

Casey Chan News Friday, 06 November 2009

We all know Google is as minimalist as they come when it comes to their homepage. Google.com rarely displays anything else other than the Search Bar and occasional artwork celebrating a holiday. So when something new is added, it's a pretty big deal. Today is a pretty big deal.

Droid Day officially gets Google approval with a text ad saying 'New! The DROID is on sale now. Learn more.'. Sure we would have loved an Android-specific graphic...

Hardware Review: Motorola Droid on Verizon

Casey Chan Smartphones, Featured Friday, 06 November 2009

It's pretty amazing to think how far Android has come in just one year. Just 12 months ago we were getting all excited about the T-Mobile G1 and the promises that Android 1.0 held. Fast forward 365 days and we're looking at all that potential realized--the Motorola DROID is simply a fantastic device and Android 2.0 makes it all the more amazing. The DROID is our faith in Android, re-affirmed.

HTC Droid Eris Hands-On!

Dieter Bohn Smartphones Friday, 06 November 2009

Sure, most of the attention is going to the Motorola Droid (and deservedly so, we suppose), but HTC's little Droid Eris is a worthy phone in its own right -- especially at $99.  If you're a widget-fanatic, HTC's Sense UI on the Eris is really slick, but otherwise we have to say advantage Droid.

Still...

Verizon Finally Announces DROID Eris, $99 Available Nov 6th

Casey Chan News Thursday, 05 November 2009

Verizon has officially made the DROID Eris, Verizon's version of the HTC Hero, well, official. Like previous reports, the DROID Eris will release on November 6th for the low, low price of $99 (after rebate, with 2 year contract). We're unsure of why Verizon decided to wait until the day before to announce this puppy but the pricing is absolutely on point. It feels like Verizon is the only carrier who "gets" it when it comes to pricing.

We're hoping that this is a start of a trend and that many other Verizon stores will follow suit with midnight launches...

Droid Eris Gets Unboxed, Better than Sprint HTC Hero ?

Casey Chan News Thursday, 05 November 2009

The DROID Eris, Verizon's version of the HTC Hero, has been unboxed and looks generally ready to go for the November 6th launch. Why Verizon doesn't want to officially announce this device is beyond us, because from the looks of it, they've got themselves a winner here.

BGR's tipster says that the DROID Eris is both thinner and lighter than the Sprint...

Expect full coverage of the DROID in the days leading up to Droid Day (November 6th) and beyond. Hands-...
