Channel discovery on mobile just got a bit easier

A small update to the YouTube app is being pushed out tonight to improve search and channel functionality. The changelog is brief here, but these are some important small tweaks. First up you'll now see channel results when you search for keywords along with video results — channels will show up at the top of the search results when a match is found.

Additionally, when you tap into those channels you'll now make use of the standardized "tab" layout on the page, which you can easily swipe left and right between Activity, Videos and Playlists. Google says that the app update has various bugfixes as well, including a bizarre issue where the Cast button would be on top of the current video when Bluetooth was connected.

You can snag the latest updated version (5.3.23 on our devices) at the Play Store link above.

Was wondering how many comments it would take for someone to bitch about this. Oh, and look, it was one of the guys who was advocating for media piracy the other day... Count me unsurprised.

Winter is coming. She's quite the screamer.

What's the reason for having to have Google Play Services updated in order to run any of the newer updates?

Because Google Play Services runs common elements for many of Google's apps (as I understand it).

The update also did remove the "no internet connection" error that I was always getting when starting a video. By the way, it works smoother and faster now.

I updated and when I watched a video with an ad, I waited 5 seconds for the 'Skip' button. Right as that moment hit, an 'Also watch this video' type bar popped right over the Skip button. I was trapped as the ad kept playing. Didn't like that.

Since the update, every time I open a video I get the message: 'this action isn't allowed'.

Now if only YouTube could stop pestering me to change my YouTube account into my Gmail username...

Just went through that as well. Had to login to the desktop version to disconnect that google+ account from the YouTube account. Since then I haven't been asked which account to use YouTube with every time I open the app. Crossing fingers it sticks this way! :)
