FB GC 5

Facebook does a really good job reminding us when our upcoming Events are or when our friends and families have their birthdays. It’s gotten to the point now where I’ve given up trying to memorize birthdays and just look to Facebook. The problem I run into is that I don’t spend all my time on Facebook, so if there was an easy way for me to see the reminders on a service that I do, such as Google Calendar, it would be a lot more valuable. Enter: syncing your Facebook Events with your Google Calendar. It is an easy process that will take ten minutes tops. Here is the step by step process:

First: Go to your Facebook account and click Events in the left pane. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see three links: Past Events, Birthdays and Export.

FB GC 2

Next: I'm going to show Birthdays only, but if you want all events, just click Export and skip this step. Click Birthdays. Scroll all the way to the bottom again and click Export Birthdays. A link will pop up.

GB GC 3

Finally Copy the link and go into your Google Calendar. In Other Calendars in the bottom left, select Add, then Add by URL. Paste the link you copied into the box.

FB GC 4

Voila! You're all set. The Calendar will appear in your Other Calendars as Friends' Birthdays. If you are on your Android device and go into your Calendar application -> Settings -> Calendars, it should be listed. If the box is ticked, then that means it's syncing to your Android device. Now you won't have to worry about visiting Facebook when you're worried about missing someone's birthday you may have forgotten.

Nice Simple write up.

I'll be doing this tonight when i get home.

An even simpler way to achieve this:
http://freedom.konscript.com

It will show you events you have answered "Attending" or "Maybe attending", leaving those out you haven't answered yet or won't attend - that way you'll get rid of "spammy" events.

Disclaimer: I've tried all the other services online to solve this problem, but they have ceased existing, or are not working well. Therefore I created this service.

as a side note: HTC Sense does this on its own. Though it only pulls them into your phones Cal, not into your Google Cal.

It's probably right in front of me, but how did you get the scenic background on your Google calendar?

mjneid says:

It's a transparent theme for the phone. It's actually the phone's background. You can see the continuation of the wallpaper around it.

keanhong says:

u can enable it in labs..

nice!

Thanks! It would be nice if they had a few canned ones available.

I'm running cyanogen 7.1 and it has google calendar built in, however, for the life of me, I cannot get it to show the agenda like the pic up above. I'm assuming Sean is using an app/widget. I WANNA KNOW WHICH ONE IT IS!!! I tried going to the market and tried out smooth calendar...no avail, it's just a single bar with up to 5 entries. Help me out someone!

not 100% sure, but it looks like a widget from launcher pro plus

nice little article. short but simple. Thanks guys

Hmm, followed the steps exactly, and I see all the birthdays on my google calendar (on the computer), but they do not appear to be syncing to the calendar on my phone. It looks like in the screenshot that you're using Launcher Pro's calendar widget (as am I). Do I need to adjust any settings in either LP or the stock calendar? According to the stock calendar, all my calendars are set to display. Thoughts?

Doesn't quite work for me.

Birthdays don't show up at all in my google calendar. I tried adding just birthdays following the steps in the article and also doing all events. Both calendars show up under Other Calendars without any errors, but birthdays don't seem to show anywhere.

Facebook events just show up as "busy" without any event details.

Any suggestions? Maybe it's a permissions issue.

Same problem here. I have the US Holidays calendar set up in Other calendars and they show up just fine. However, Friends' Birthdays don't show up on my calendar at all.

jwilbanks79 says:

I just checked my calendar again and there they are! I guess it just took a little while for the sync to happen.

Evan says:

Now all events, including birthdays show up, just took several hours.

Events other than birthdays show up, but still no useful title, just "busy".

They also show up even if I haven't indicated I'm attending.

If you go into setting on ur calendar there is an option to show declined events or not...

i imported my facebook birthdays like this a long time ago, and they appear properly on the google calendar website as all day events, but when i view them on my phone they're listed as 12am-12am events and they make my calendar look super cluttered. :/

Thank you, something very simple but very useful

Awesome tip!! My mytouch 4G phone did this automatically, but my Xoom doesn't. So great tip, thanks!!!

Turbod says:

This works great for birthdays but not for events. Gmail and Facebook don't play nice with eachother because events are private. Private events only show up as busy on your calendar with no info about the event. I finally found a work around using Yahoo Pipes as a go between, it changes the label from private to public so you can see the event info.

Ha! I'm not trying to brag, but I somehow figured this out a while back. I guess I should have shared. I have all my calendars synced with my Google calendar, which then automatically shows on my phone. It's pretty cool! The only weird thing is that I sometimes see random blank events show on my phone because of Facebook. Cant delete them, cant find them on Facebook.

out of curiosity, as i've never been much for time-management and have never really bothered learning the nuances of calendar exporting, will this keep up to date? or do i have to delete and re-export the link when details/friends-lists/event calendars change?
if it keeps on top of it for me i'm so effing thankful for this tip. otherwise i probably wont bother keeping everything up to date.

I've been using this for a while now but how do you get Birthdays to stay on your calendar?

My Birthdays show up as 12am to 12am the next day, but they disappear from my calendar right after 12am the day of..... My calendar doesn't show FB birthdays from today back.

For looking ahead its okay but kinda useless on the day, which is the most important. :(

Is this something that we can tweak or its all on FB guys to fix?

I am able to sync my facebook birthdays and events with my google calender online. How ever when I sync it with my glaxy epic touch, the only thing that shows up is birthdays. Is there a way to get everything synced? ie. events and us holidays?

igorsantos07 says:

I'm having the same problem as someone reported above... all events have no title, only day/time.
Any idea about how to solve this? :(

Can someone help me???????????? I have been trying to sync my facebook calendar with google calendar from my phone for months!!!! When I go into my fb and click on Events, the only choices at the bottom are Future, Past, and Birthdays. There is no Export. I do not use my home computer calendar. I need to get some help on how to do this on my phone. Please help!! I never had this issue with my Blackberry. I can't imagine why this is so hard. Maybe I'm just stupid.
