Instagram is testing a new design that ditches color to help your photos pop

Instagram is testing a new design for its Android app, one that ditches the familiar blue for a simpler, white design. In fact, white is the dominant color across the board in this test version of the app, from the feed to the camera.

A screenshot of the Android app redesign was posted to Twitter by Thomas Pepall (via Reddit):

Instagram appears to only be testing this design with a very small group of people on both Android and iOS, which it does from time to time, as the company told Mashable. Because of this, it's unclear if this design will eventually roll out to all Instagram users.

  • I hope they have a dark theme.
That is just too much white. My OnePlus X is crying. Posted via the Android Central App
  • yeah, cause most apps these days have a dark theme....
  • If they want photos to pop, they should be turning the backgrounds black instead of white. But of course, it's Facebook we're talking about. They're idiots. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Have you seen their profit figures and user account numbers? They aren't idiots. Blackberry Priv
    Nvidia Shield "Portable"
    Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • My brother has that. I was wondering what was up. Back on Android! Didn't take too long. Galaxy Note 4, AT&T of course.
  • They should also update their app icon, its becoming boring imo. Posted via the Android Central App
  • You can do that already. Why wait?
  • It doesn't match any of their other apps either. Posted via the Android Central App
  • another +1 for dark theme... that and make the feed smaller squares like on your profile...
  • This happened to me. I was very confused. I looked all over the setting to see what was going on but couldn't find anything. It is a lot of white! I don't know if I like it or not. I agree if they are trying a white theme they should definitely try a dark theme also. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Why don't they just update their app to fit the android design standards first.
  • Because no one cares. Just use a third party app if you do. Posted from the Star Destroyer The Finalizer in General Hux's bedroo above Moraband.
  • +1 on dark theme. There is too much white that my battery drain faster when opening it for too long
  • This looks extremely ugly I prefer the blue and white Posted from my Moto X 2nd gen and my Nexus 9 both on Android Marshmallow

  • Facebook update your Android app with all through and through material design and turn the notification bar blue too it will look a lot better Posted from my Moto X 2nd gen and my Nexus 9 both on Android Marshmallow
  • My notification bar is blue.
  • It's black on the Facebook app Posted from my Moto X 2nd gen and my Nexus 9 both on Android Marshmallow
  • +1 Back on Android! Didn't take too long. Galaxy Note 4, AT&T of course.
  • Looks lame... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Try making the app more user friendly first. On Windows I had 6tag, which, besides a dark theme and several other options the official app lacks, has the ability to disable double tap to like and does not keep harassing me to add people. If you have a friend with a Windows phone you should definitely compare the 'official' apps on Android to the excellent alternatives on Windows. You might be surprised to find the app gap is often reversed ;)
  • I'd love to see a dark theme Posted via Galaxy Note 4
  • Maybe they should focus their development efforts on not compressing Android images first. When posting the same exact photo through their iOS app, it looks much better.
