See all the best Prime Day deals

There's no doubt in our minds that Amazon is planning a huge event this year, but as of right now we don't know the specifics about what kind of deals we will see, how long the event will last, or anything like that. If you're in the market for a new digital camera, be it a DSLR or point and shoot, Prime Day might just bring the deal that makes you click the buy button finally.

It's likely we will see sales from a variety of top camera companies, so let's break down what we can expect to see and what you should be looking for on the big day.

Whether you're looking for a camera that you can change the lenses on, like a DSLR, or just want something to stick in your pocket and go, Canon has a ton of options available. From a beginner option like the Powershot ELPH series series to more advanced options like the Canon 80D and 5D Mark IV, we anticipate to see some great discounts on Prime Day for Canon's best gear.

The savings may not be a huge dollar amount on these, and sometimes the best deals come in the form of a bundle. Be on the lookout for discounts on camera bodies with extra lenses or SD cards, and maybe even a battery grip. Amazon does a good job of matching competitors price drops, but you may also want to keep an eye on other camera-specific retailers like B&H, Adorama, and others.

Like Canon, Nikon has a variety of cameras for different skill levels, and knowing which one you are interested in will be important before you begin your shopping. Are you looking for a full-frame camera, a crop sensor body, a point and shoot? Camera hardware is all very different, and each type is meant to be used for something entirely different.

It's quite possible that we see a bunch of Nikon gear on sale this Prime Day, though not all of it may be at Amazon. The Coolpix cameras are great for beginners, and the D3400 and D750 are great for the more experienced users who want to switch out lenses, configure manual settings, and more.

When it comes to 4K cameras and micro 4/3 bodies, Sony has become the "go-to name" these days. The company has really done a great job of bringing some incredible tech into small and portable packages, which has really excited YouTubers and content creators. We don't expect that its latest models, like the A7III will have any notable discounts, but you may be able to find a decent package deal on an a7RII or the RX100 point and shoot that vloggers love.

Since the latest Sony gear is all so new, we expect that the prices will actually hold what they are now. While it may be disappointing to most, we hope that by Black Friday those will be ready to drop a bit, if not before.

Olympus was a big name in cameras back in the film days, and while the company still makes some great digital options, the name is far less common than the likes of Sony, Canon, and Nikon. If you're looking at an Olympus camera, odds are you're looking for an entry-level waterproof camera or a portable micro 4/3 option. We tend to see these both discounted around big shopping events, and expect Prime Day to be similar.

The waterproof camera is great for tossing in your bag and taking with you on hikes, boat trips, vacation, and more, while something like the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III camera is a little larger, but still quite portable. The lens selection for Olympus cameras is a bit slimmer than for others, though you can always grab an adapter and use popular lenses from Canon, Sigma, and more.

Action Cameras, Dash Cams, and more

Beyond the big name brands, we expect to see discounts on a variety of other cameras on Prime Day as well. From backup cameras for your car to action cameras for the next time you hit the slopes, there will be an abundance of options available. Yi makes some great, affordable, action cameras, and Anker makes some of the best dash cameras you can buy right now. Whether you're in the market for something big or small, you'll want to keep an eye out on Prime Day to try and save a few bucks.
