Huawei Ascend Mate

Free for £29 per month for pay monthly customers and £300 for pay as you go customers

After it was confirmed just over a week ago that Vodafone would be carrying Huawei's newest phablet, the Huawei Ascend Mate has launched as a Vodafone exclusive. We first saw this device at the Las Vegas CES 2013 in January.

Packing a generous 6.1-inch screen, the Ascend Mate uses an IPS display with 280 x 720 resolution. A 1.5 GHz quad-core processor is powered by the 4050 mAh battery inside. Internal memory comes in at 8 GB, which is expandable via micro-SD for an additional 32 GB. Android Jelly Bean 4.1 will be the shipping OS.

As for pricing, Vodafone states the "Huawei Ascend Mate is free for £29 per month (including 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data) for pay monthly customers and £300 for pay as you go customers." The full press release can be found after the break.

Huawei Ascend Mate now available exclusively at launch from Vodafone UK

The NEW Huawei Ascend Mate combines all the benefits of an almost tablet sized screen with the convenience of a slim and compact handset, designed to fit easily into your pocket or handbag.

Available exclusively at launch from Vodafone UK, the Huawei Ascend Mate is free for £29 per month (including 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data) for pay monthly customers and £300 for pay as you go customers. As well as the super-sized 6.1 inch HD display it packs a powerful 1.5GHz quad core processor and runs on Android Jellybean 4.1 for both speed and seamless browsing.

With Huawei’s Emotion UI, you can customise your new device as you wish, and what’s more you can use it anywhere and at any time. Its highly-sensitive IPS touchscreen is not only designed to cope with almost all light conditions, the unique Magic Touch technology means you can even use it with your gloves on.

Designed for both work and play, you can move the Huawei Ascend Mate’s keyboard to the side of the screen for one handed typing – whether you’re writing emails or updating Facebook – and the 8MP camera with Full HD recording and playback is great for capturing and re-living all those memorable moments.

There’s also loads of memory and a durable battery so you can store and enjoy films, games and entertainment when you’re on the go.

That was late to the table - it was introduced in January/February and there is information about an upcoming Mate II with 1080p screen.

I would not buy this one.

MERCDROID says:

Yeah, it amazes me, that many of these phones were announced, back in January, and are, only now, starting to come to market.

What part of the process takes 6-7 months to complete?

The competition is really heating up now in the 6 inch space, with the Samsung Mega, LG Vu, this one and the Sony.

I thought the Note2 was at the limit of what people would consider a handheld/pocketable unit but I guess there's still room for more.
