The latest member of the 'One' family is a lean, mean metal beast — selling for $399.99 unlocked in the U.S.
At its live-streamed virtual launch event today, HTC has announced the latest member of its premium HTC One family, the A9. The HTC One A9 brings balanced mid-level specs to an aluminum-bodied smartphone running the latest version of Android, 6.0 Marshmallow. Other notables include a front-mounted fingerprint reader and a 13-megapixel camera camera with OIS (optical image stabilization).
At a glance, there are clear similarities to Apple's most recent iPhone designs, but plenty of HTC design traits are evident too, including the dual-textured metal finish, subtle brushed effects on the rear of some models, and antenna cutouts resembling the M8 and M9. That means you get a sleek wraparound aluminum design with slightly angled sides, and reflective trims around the edges.
Powering the A9 is Qualcomm's recently-announced Snapdragon 617 CPU, a 64-bit octa-core processor with support for carrier-aggregated 4G LTE. That's paired with 2 or 3 gigabytes of RAM, depending on market, with the 2GB model coming with 16GB of internal storage versus 32GB in the 3GB model. We're told the U.S. will get the 3GB/32GB A9, while buyers in the UK can buy the 2GB/16GB version. And like most other HTC phones, this is expandable via microSD.
HTC is first to market with a non-Nexus phone running Marshmallow out of the box.
All A9 models come with a 2150 mAh fixed battery, and while that seems small on paper, the phone supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 with a compatible charger, while also being forwards-compatible with the upcoming QuickCharge 3.0 standard.
There's a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display adorning the front of the HTC One A9, along with the a single-touch fingerprint scanner that also doubles as a capacitive home key. Most of the time you'll still be using on-screen keys though, as the A9 uses virtual buttons for back, home and task-switching.
The A9's software is also a big deal — it's the first non-Nexus smartphone to ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the latest version of Google's OS has been blended with HTC's Sense software, resulting in something that looks like a cross between the look and feel of the M9 and vanilla Android. This is still very much a Sense phone, though, and advancements in HTC's software bring new camera controls, among other tweaks.
HTC's packed a 13-megapixel camera with OIS onto the back of its latest handset, while the front-facing camera is the same 4-megapixel "Ultrapixel" unit used in the M9. After a disappointing showing from the M9's rear shooter, the use of an optically-stabilized camera and re-tooled camera software could give HTC fans the superior photographic experience they've been craving.
The phone will arrive globally in November, with separate announcements expected from carriers and retailers soon. In the U.S., it'll sell for $399.99 unlocked from HTC.com with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. And at this price point, the A9 could compete strongly against rival mid-to-high-end phones from the likes of Motorola and Huawei. Pre-orders begin at 12:30pm EDT today at HTC.com.

An evolution of the iconic HTC One family design, the HTC One A9 draws on the natural beauty around us, by using rich, striking colors and unique finishes – an approach called "metalmorphics." Meanwhile, the front UltraPixel camera delivers the best self-portraits in any lighting condition, using HTC's UltraPixel sensor to capture 300% more light than conventional smartphone cameras.
With the HTC One A9, no detail is too small. Offering an optional Pro mode to capture the perfect photo without being a photography expert, you can also save photos using RAW capture – a tool used by professional photographers – for an unmatched level of detail and post-shot editing flexibility. Or you can keep things simple with Photo Editor's one-button enhancement feature, which automatically brightens colors and sharpens edges for unbelievably clear and crisp photos2.
Sometimes a still photo just isn't enough. With the HTC One A9's Hyperlapse editing tool you can speed up your videos to 12 times as fast for a dramatic time-lapse effect, creating an immersive video that perfectly captures the moments that matter. Speed through your video or use capture mode to edit in slow motion, highlighting those unforgettable memories. With a built-in DAC that delivers audio at 24-bit, 192KHz quality – better than CD quality – it provides a richness and depth like you've never before heard from your music collection. A powerful high-output headphone amplifier, with double the output of other handsets, provides more power and dynamic range so you can hear every nuance of your favorite music, videos and games. Optional high-resolution audio certified HTC Pro Studio Earphones deliver both noise isolation and truly immersive sound.
Cutting-edge software: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
The first non-Nexus smartphone powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the HTC One A9 brings Google's latest innovations and the simplicity of HTC Sense right out of the box. Combined with a multi-directional fingerprint scanner, Android Pay makes purchasing items as secure and as easy as "tap, pay, done."5 Google's Now on Tap feature also intuitively provides contextual information about whatever is on your screen – look up reviews for a movie from a text, hear a song mentioned in a blog post, or book seats at a restaurant from an email, all at the press of the home button.
With so many new features, the HTC One A9 has also been designed with all new power-saving capabilities to maximize battery life. Doze automatically turns off power hungry applications when your phone is left idle, while App Standby knows when an app open in the background isn't being used and shuts it down until you need it again. In addition, the phone's new processor, AMOLED screen and support for the optional HTC Rapid Charger 2.0, for up to 75% faster charging6 are all optimized to maximize battery life throughout the day7. In real terms this means, for example, that you can play 12 hours of HD video on one charge.
