Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

5

If you thought you'd get through CES this year without a new decimal-sized Galaxy tablet, you were wrong. Tonight here at Pepcom we got our hands on the upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.7 with Verizon LTE connectivity, slated to hit Big Red "soon." Formally announced just a few hours ago, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 has a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor hidden beneath a 7.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, the true star of the show. It's a 720p HD display at 1280 x 800 resolution, which is sure to knock your socks off. It seems like each iteration of the Galaxy Tab line comes packed with a more gorgeous display, the 7.7 is no exception. It's really, really nice. I'll tell you what else is nice after the break.

Hands-on with the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

56

One of our biggest worries in our review of the Motorola Droid RAZR was with the non-removable battery. A 1780 mAh power source that can't be replaced on a power-hungry 4G LTE device is just asking for trouble.

That fear has been addressed with the new Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX. In a nutshell, you've got a slightly thicker Droid RAZR with nearly double the battery life of the orginal RAZR thanks to a 3300 mAh battery.

Now, normally when you have that kind of capacity, you've also got an unsightly wart or huge humpback that makes you embarrassed to take the phone out of your pocket. But the Droid RAZR MAXX beefs up in style, adding just a milimeter or so of thickness. In fact, if you stare at the two phones long enough, you start to forget which is which.

Otherwise, same old (excellent) RAZR. Hope you early adopters aren't kicking yourselves too much right now.

We've got a full hands-on after the break.

Sony announces the Xperia S -- 1.5GHz dual core, 12MP camera, 720p screen [updated]

31

It's been extensively leaked for a few months, but now the Sony Ericsson "Nozomi" has an official name -- the Sony Xperia S. As with the Xperia Ion, the Sony Ericsson name has been dropped in favor of the new Sony Xperia branding. Most of the specs from the Xperia Ion have been carried over to the Xperia S, with the notable exception being LTE support -- the Xperia S is a HSPA-only device.

Other specs are exactly as we've heard from all the pre-release rumors and leaks. There's a 720p zero-air-gap display on a 4.3-inch chassis, powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. The beastly 12-megapixel Exmor R camera from the Ion has made it across too. And like its big brother, the Xperia S ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with the promise of an update to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Other notable features include panoramic photos and PlayStation certification.

The Xperia S will arrive globally in March. Join us after the jump for the full press release, along with promotional videos and photos.

Sony announces two new smartphones for Japan -- the Xperia Acro HD and Xperia NX

0

Alongside the Xperia Ion and Xperia S, Sony has announced two new smartphones aimed at the Japanese market. The new Xperia Acro HD and Xperia NX are both exclusive to Japan, and appear to be based upon the manufacturer's American and international offerings. The Acro HD is described as a successor to last year's Xperia Acro, while the Xperia NX is said to be an Xperia S variant for Japanese consumers.

So far no images or specifications are available for either devices, but we'll keep you updated as further information emerges.

HTC adds Desire HD, and additional versions of Desire and Wildfire to its bootloader unlocking database

3

HTC took a few minutes away from their time at CES and updated the bootloader unlocking tool database with a few more devices this evening, namely the Desire HD and additional versions of the Desire and Wildfire.  The list is growing at a nice steady clip, with over 40 listed models and support for other devices not yet listed.  Nice job HTC, keep it coming!

Live - Sony Press Conference at CES 2012

1

We've escaped the Sands at CES 2012, and are in the Las Vegas Convention Center to see some of Sony's latest announcements. Some things are already official, but maybe there will be some other surprises, too. Expect a lot of gaming, camera, TV, and audio news too... If you're into that sort of thing.

Ford announces voice-controlled NPR Android app using SYNC AppLink technology

6

Ford's SYNC system is pretty cool, and it just got a bit cooler with on-demand playlists and programming from NPR, all controlled via voice using SYNC AppLink.  NPR is the first major player to embrace the Internet-Enabled Car market, releasing a dedicated NPR News app.  The NPR News app lets users create playlists of stories and programs for later listening, and lets you pick a topic and hear the news without touching a thing.  With hands-free laws becoming prevalant, it's high time we see voice automated apps for the car.  We imagine this is a trend that will continue, and it's great to see NPR on board.  You can grab the updated NPR news app after the break, as well as read the official press release.

NVIDIA announces 7-inch tablet - Tegra 3 and Ice Cream Sandwich for $249 [updated]

71

This just in from the ZOMG! department -- NVIDIA has announced that a 7-inch version of the Transformer Prime will be available, complete with the Tegra 3 processor and Ice Cream Sandwich (wait for it) for $249.  We don't have the full details just yet, only what we've said above.  But isn't that enough to get you excited?  I'm ready to get in line tonight!

Update: We just heard back from ASUS, and the model number for this tablet is the M370T.  That model was used incorrectly in a press release for the ME171 earlier this morning.  It still has the Tegra 3, and it's still $249.  I know most of us weren't really concerned about the name or model number, but now everything is all cleared up.
