Samsung officially unveils the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge plus

In conjunction with its Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City, Samsung today officially announced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. The two phones fall into the same family as the previously-announced Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, with very familiar designs and lots of shared internal components.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

The Galaxy Note 5 retains the same 5.7-inch screen size as the Note 4, but has otherwise completely different hardware. The solid metal and glass design of the GS6 has been scaled up to meet the size, with a big change in that the glass on the back of the phone is curved on the edges for a better feel. The battery is no longer removable and you can't add an SD card, but there is now integrated wireless charging, a faster processor, a full 4GB of RAM and a few new software features to go along with a refreshed S Pen experience.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ bridges the gap between both the original Galaxy S6 edge and the new Note 5, taking on the exact same design of the former and the new-and-improved internal components of the latter. The GS6 edge+ has the same curved glass screen and edge screen features as the original, but scaled up to a 5.7-inch size to appeal to those looking for a little more room to both create and consume on their phones. A few subtle changes in edge screen software also enhance the experience when compared to the original version.

Both phones run on an identical internal platform, with an Exynos octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage, a 3000 mAh battery and 16MP camera, with the processor and camera being identical to those in the Galaxy S6. The Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ also have the same one-touch fingerprint sensor in the home button, in addition to very similar software to the GS6.

Both phones will be available for pre-order in the U.S. at various prices and terms depending on the carrier — T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, U.S. Cellular or Sprint — you choose, and will go on sale officially on August 21, just one week from today. You'll also have the ability to try them out in-store before they go on sale at select carrier stores and retailers.

There's a whole lot to unpack with these two announcements, and you can follow all of the details for both of these new phones right here on Android Central.

NEW YORK, August 13, 2015 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced today the global launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5. Both devices represent Samsung's commitment to the big screen smartphone market, which Samsung boldly pioneered in 2011 with the original Galaxy Note.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5 blend form and function with industry leading features, including: Samsung's best screen technology, Samsung's most advanced camera for high quality photos and videos, fast wireless and wired charging, and an incredibly powerful processor. With its curved 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen, the Galaxy S6 edge+ makes the edge experience even better and provides a more immersive multimedia experience. Galaxy S6 edge+ – best for multimedia

With the Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung is bringing everything consumers love about the S6 edge to a bigger screen in a slim and thin form factor. Beautiful and intuitive, it uses the dual edges as a shortcut from any screen to users' top contacts and apps. 'Apps edge' allows users to access their favorite apps by just swiping the edge display. 'People edge' helps users quickly find their favorite contacts and send messages, or give a call directly from any screen.

Galaxy Note5 – perfect for multitaskers

The Galaxy Note5 is a stunning upgrade to Samsung's flagship Galaxy Note line – more powerful than ever. Inspired by the design legacy of the Galaxy S6, it ergonomically fits in one hand with a narrower bezel and curved back which makes it easier to use the phone with one hand.

Engineered to help people get more done, faster, the Galaxy Note5 includes an all new S Pen that feels more solid and balanced in the user's hand, offering improved writing capabilities and a variety of practical tools. A unique clicking mechanism pops the S Pen out with just one quick click. Users can now quickly jot down ideas or information even when the screen is off. The 'Air Command' feature gets more intuitive and practical as well; now the icon hovers for instant access to all of S Pen tools from any screen at any time. Users can also annotate on PDF files or capture a whole website from top to bottom with Scroll Capture.
