Hands-on with the Opera Mini 5 beta browser for Android

Phil Nickinson Applications, News Thursday, 11 March 2010

Opera Mini 5 beta hit the Android Market this morning, and we've been putting it through its paces. It's important to remember that this is Opera Mini, not the Opera Mobile we saw at Mobile World Congress, and the two behave differently.

Opera Mini...

The Firefox for Mobile folks teased us today with a couple more pics of the browser on Android phones. There's the shot of it above that they posted on their Facebook page, and they also linked to another running on...

AC @ MWC: Hands-on video with the Opera Mobile browser for Android

Phil Nickinson News Tuesday, 16 February 2010

Here's a quick look at Opera Mobile on Android. And it looks, well, like you'd expect Opera Mobile to on Android. It's nice and fast, thanks to the major compression going on, and it'll make a nice addition to Android's browser arsenal. Problem is, you can't get it. We've...

Skyfire purchases Steel Android browser from kolbysoft

Phil Nickinson Applications, News Thursday, 11 February 2010

In a bit of an Android browser shake-up, Skyfire -- best known for its Windows Mobile browser -- has purchased kolbysoft, which produces the popular Webkit-based Steel browser. For the time being, Steel will remain in production until Skyfire tools up its own Android product.

The main difference in the current Skyfire browser is that all of the heavy lifting -- as in the actual rendering of a Web page -- is done on Skyfire's servers and then beamed out to your phone. That results in much quicker load times, means you'...

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 10 February 2010

We've known for a while that Opera was planning on bringing a version of its Opera Mobile browser to Android. And now we're going to get a look at it. Opera announced in a news release that it will unveil Opera Mobile 10 for Android at Mobile World Congress next week in Barcelona. And if it's anything like the version Windows Mobile users have been enjoying, it's definitely something you're going to want to check out. [Opera]

Firefox on Android Progressing Nicely, Loads First Page

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 03 February 2010

Like we said before, it's going to take some time before Fennec aka Firefox Mobile actually gets on Android. But at least it looks like porting Fennec over to Android is progressing rather nicely--they actually got their first page load. According to the developer:

Mouse events sort of work, toplevel windows sort of work, keyboard doesn't...

Android is on Mozilla's road map, but don't expect Fennec anytime soon

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 27 January 2010

Word's been going around that Firefox will have a browser in beta in February. That's a bit odd, as I've been following the development of Fennec for Maemo and Windows Mobile -- it's being developed openly -- and have seen neither hide nor hair of it. So it looks like a German Mozilla community site may be a little ahead of...

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 21 January 2010

Mobile Browsing Increased in December, Android Led The Way

Casey Chan News Monday, 04 January 2010

According to NetApplications, mobile web browsing is now responsible for 1.3% of all internet browsing. 1.3% may seem like an insignificant number but it's nothing to laugh at. In the beginning of 2009, we saw mobile browsing only at around .5% which means we've nearly doubled mobile browsing in a year. How did this happen? Well we can thank Android for one.

Android mobile browsing spiked an impressive +54.8% in December (when compared to the...

Opera Mobile available for Android, but you can't have it yet

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 10 December 2009

Opera CEO Jon Von Tetzchner in the fall said Opera Mobile one day would be released for Android, and that day has come.

Sort of.

Opera this morning announced its new cross-UI framework, which in layman's terms means the browser should look, feel and act the same whether on Windows Mobile Symbian, Android, etc.

And so, Opera Mobile...

Firefox mobile may yet come to Android

Jeremy Sikora News, Software Tuesday, 08 December 2009

Our lucky friends over at WMExperts have been testing Firefox Mobile Alpha 3, but we haven't had much hope for Android to get the Fennec browser. That is, until a recent Q&A with Madhava Enros, the mobile UI lead for Mozilla, left slip that "there is investigation going on into making...

Dolphin Browser Adds Multitouch To DROID

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 01 December 2009

We know that the Motorola DROID is fully capable of multitouch gestures but because of reasons beyond our control, it's no where to be found in the apps. Luckily, if you're thirsting to multitouch your DROID, you can hit Android Market and download the Dolphin Browser which has been recently updated to support multitouch...

Casey Chan News Thursday, 06 August 2009

Opera CEO, Jon Von Tetzchner, recently stated that their full-fledged browser Opera Mobile will be coming to Android. To quote:

"Yes, we are working on an Android version," von Tetzchner said.

He doesn't give a specific timeline but hopefully it comes out sooner than later. Opera Mini is currently available on Android but Opera Mini doesn't contain the full capabilities of Opera Mobile. Opera...

To give you a brief run through (for those...

Flash is Coming to Android Courtesy of BSQUARE

Casey Chan News Thursday, 26 March 2009

Score one for the Android user, kind of. BSQUARE has announced that they'll be porting Flash over to Android for a "global tier-1 carrier". Their words, not ours. We're going to go out on a limb there and predict that the "global tier-1 carrier" is T-Mobile. Shocking, we know.

The press release leaves a lot to the imagination. We don't know the release date, we don't know how it works, we don't know how this solution works with

Firefox Mobile aka Fennec Isn't Coming To Android Anytime Soon

Casey Chan News Thursday, 12 March 2009

As great as Firefox is for desktop web browsing, right now, it's just as bad for mobile browsing. Okay, it's not that bad. But really, Firefox Mobile (they dropped the Fennec moniker to prevent confusion) is at such an infantile stage that it's hardly relevant in the scope of mobile web browsers.
