Want to play PS4 games on your new Xperia Z3? No problem
One of our favorite features of the new Sony Xperia Z3 line of devices announced at IFA 2014 is the PS4 remote play feature. If you're a PS4 owner and a Z3, Z3 Compact or Z3 Tablet owner you'll be able to download the new Remote Play application from the Google Play Store – and it'll be available at the launch of these devices – and hook into your console over Wifi for some remote play goodness. Call of Duty in bed? No problem!
Remote play also lets you use your PS4 Dualshock 4 controller to play the games. If you want to attach your phone to your controller Sony will happily sell you its new mount to do just that. It's basically a suction cup with a bracket that attaches around the controller and holds the phone, or tablet, securely in place while you game. If you don't want to use a controller Sony will overlay the Dualshock 4 controls on the display.
We've had chance to have a very quick first look at things in action, and we're impressed. Despite being staged by Sony, trade-show Wifi is never a reliable place to test, well, anything that needs Wifi, but generally performance was good. The connection dropped out a little but when you're at home with only a few devices connected to the Wifi you'll probably be fine.
It's an ecosystem play, for sure, but an impressive one nonetheless. We'd be lying if we didn't say that playing PS4 games on a smartphone made us smile just a bit. Just how good it really is will need to wait until real people in real homes get playing with it. Until then, check out our first look video below.
