What you need to know

  • You may soon be able to search your WhatsApp messages by date.
  • The 'search by date' feature is currently in an early stage of development.
  • WhatsApp is also testing improvements for Storage Usage on both Android and iOS.

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp could soon introduce a new feature that will make it possible for users to search for messages by date. As per WABetaInfo, the feature is currently being developed for both iOS and Android versions of the messaging app. In addition to the search by date feature, WhatsApp is also said to be testing a few new storage tools.

The search by date feature will enable users to easily search for a message by choosing a specific date. While WhatsApp does offer a chat search feature already, it isn't all that great if you want to search for a message that you had sent or received several weeks back. As you can see in the screenshots below, the feature will be accessible by tapping on the calendar icon when using the in-chat search feature.

The Storage Usage section in the WhatsApp app on Android and iOS may be completely redesigned in a future update. Screenshots shared by WABetaInfo reveal default filters to find large files or view only forwarded files. You will also be able to sort photos in a specific chat by the date or file size. Similar to the search by date feature, the new storage management tools are also in the early stages of development currently. It will likely take a few months for these new features to begin rolling out to users.
