Google is redesigning Messages again, and heavy texters might hate it
Google is overhauling pinned chats, and I'm already missing the old layout.
I’ve been using Google Messages long enough to appreciate a good interface refresh, but I’m not sold on every redesign making an app better. Google’s latest attempt to give pinned conversations more room on the home screen appears cleaner at first glance, but it also takes away some of the convenience that made the old layout practical. And judging by the early feedback from beta testers, I'm not the only one with mixed feelings.
As spotted by a few Reddit users, Google Messages is giving pinned chats a more prominent place on its home screen, and the new interface is beginning to roll out to beta testers.
The redesign features a dedicated space for pinned conversations above the regular message list, instead of the smaller pinned entries with large contact pictures. It is a more visual way to find favorite conversations, and there is no denying that it changes the look of the app. The layout is also a lot like Apple's iMessage, and that might appeal to users who like a cleaner, more spacious look.
The new design looks better, but takes up more space
I’m concerned about what gets sacrificed in the process. With larger contact photos, recent conversations will appear lower on the screen, and you’ll have to scroll more to get to messages that aren’t pinned.
Some Reddit users welcomed the change and said pinned conversations are easier to spot now and the interface looks better overall. Others are not convinced, arguing that the iOS-inspired layout makes the top of the app feel cluttered.
Another user also pointed out an awkward empty pin placeholder that appears when there are only a couple of pinned conversations. The original poster says that eventually adding more pinned chats makes that empty space disappear. The user also suggested that the limit might be six convos.
Google is also changing how search works
Google is also experimenting with a new search experience. The app moves search out of its normal location and instead puts a floating action button next to the “Start chat” button. Depending on your scroll position, it alternates between a circular magnifying glass and a pill-shaped search button. Where the Gemini shortcut will ultimately end up is still unclear.

New UI Design?from r/GoogleMessages
The rollout is proving to be as patchy as the early feedback. Some users running the beta version of Google Messages 20261030_00_RC00 have received the redesign, while others haven’t. The original poster said that he got the new interface on a Pixel 9 Pro without any additional Play Store updates, suggesting that Google is controlling availability through server-side changes.
There are also smaller complaints. Some testers have complained about choppy animations, and some have seen different interface changes on their devices.
Google has not set a stable release date. I would love to see a visual refresh, but I'd prefer to see an option to switch between compact and expanded pinned chats. A messaging app should be about making conversations easier to reach, not burying them under big shortcuts. There is still time for Google to get that balance right.
