The Interview now available to rent or buy on Google Play and YouTube [update: now live in Canada]

Update: Google Canada just took to Twitter with news that those in the great white north can get in on the action now, too!

Original Story: Sony is making The Interview available on Google Play and YouTube one day before its initial limited theatrical release. The movie will be available to rent for $5.99 or purchase for $14.99 from either outlet at 1PM EST/10AM PST today, December 24.

The Interview has been the subject of recent controversy, and Sony had last week pulled the film from theaters after several theater chains opted not to show it, citing security concerns. Sony turned to Google, among other companies, to find alternative avenues of release. In addition to YouTube and Google Play, The Interview will also be released through Microsoft's Xbox Video.

  • This is what they should have done all along, people can see the movie so that terrorists don't get to squash it and Sony can say that they're not putting people in harm's way. Posted via the Android Central App
  • But will they make as much money? Cuz we all know that's all matters
  • They might make up on insurance claim. If any. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Sure. Don't you think that most of the ticket price goes to the theater?
Also, the theaters that opted out well be losing popcorn profits, not Sony.
I wonder if this was all some odd publicity stunt. Posted via the Android Central App
  • >pizza pablo: Wrong, most of the money comes from the concession for the theater. That being said, Sony's making money off me because I bought the movie just on principle, plus I actually happen to like most of Seth's style of movies. It's already the top selling movie on Play. Will be planning to watch it tomorrow. Merry Christmas to me. Zenwatch rhymes with Winwatch. Coincidence? I think not.
  • Did the same thing. I bought it to show my support secondly. Firstly I really enjoy most of their humor. Love "The End" Posted via the Android Central App
  • I loved The End as well. I snatched this up just to see what all the hoopla was about. Was about what I expected. I enjoyed it. Posted via the Android Central App from my Nexus 7
  • Theaters make ZERO money off of the first week or so of release. Studios get all ticket sales. Why do you think Theater food is so expensive? It's because that is where Theaters make most of their money. Theaters don't get ticket profits until that window closes. This is why newer theaters are branching out and doing things like providing full restaurant service while you watch your movie. They can make more money off of that $40 meal you and your friend just ate than the ticket you paid when walking through the door. Posted via Android Central App
  • Definitely. I went to this place called the Bears tooth in Anchorage Alaska and it had couches and booth style seating, comfy chairs, upstairs balcony with tables, downstairs just as awesome. Locally made brew, fantastically amazing food that wasn't overpriced. It was pretty stinkin awesome. Best movie experience ever. Also-little known side fact Alaska was the first place that had a cable company, internet, cell and home phone company all in one, and the bigger companies followed suit. Its a company called GCI. Zenwatch rhymes with Winwatch. Coincidence? I think not.
  • 90% of the ticket price goes to the movie company that produced it. That's why concessions prices are so high, it's the theaters only real income. I was a manager at regal.
  • I absolutely refuse to buy popcorn/drinks at a theatre because of the price. Don't you think they would make more money if they sold a small popcorn for less than $5 for a small? Posted via the Android Central App
  • I don't buy anything at concessions just for myself. If it was reasonably priced I would, like you. I sneak candy in and if it's a family outing with the wife and son then I'll get a popcorn and we'll bring sodas from home. So many people pay $18+ for a couple drinks and a popcorn that I think it makes up for the ones that don't. I'm sure they've experimented with prices somewhere, but this is where we are.
  • I sneak more than candy. Burgers fit real nice in the wife's purse. If the theaters charged cheaper prices I would support them. I even sneak in bottles of pop.
And why does a theater like AMC charge less than regal? On top of that the screens are bigger and sound is better at my nearest AMC. There is no clear answer to the pricing structure. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I guess if they charged $2 then they'd have to hire more people to work in the concession area for the increased sales. I mean, why would they want to create more jobs for people right? We're talking about a $.25 maximum cost for the amount of popcorn required to fill a bag, including cost of labor. Blows my mind. Posted via the Android Central App
  • $.26 get it right
  • I'm a customer of Regal, and I concur. Posted via the Android Central App from my Nexus 7
  • I was thinking the same thing. What if this is an experiment by Sony and the other studios to see if they even need the theaters to make money off of a movie?
  • Sony will probably make as much money as they would have if they had released it in theaters. Movie theaters are the ones who won't make money here.
  • They may have been planning to do this... Things don't happen instantly...

  • Not really to disagree with you on this one but that sword cuts both ways. Last I looked we have a ton more bombs than them though they have a significant manpower advantage. • Yeah Sony wanted the social security numbers of their employees, actors, and directors released along with their payroll information all as a secret marketing stunt for a mediocre comedy. • I guess I am the only one that thinks making a movie about killing a countries current leader is pretty stupid. It just invites trouble. I thought America was above this. I was wrong. Posted via the Android Central App
  • The Dictator was about Hitler. This isn't the first time. We have half a billion movies about people trying to assassinate POTUS. "I'm da Blur boys!" - Me with 1200 ping. Yes. My Internet got worse.
  • I know right?
  • You thought Cowboy nation was above that? Really? Posted via the Android Central App
  • America? This has nothing to do with the U.S. as a nation. This was Sony. A corporation. An entity all of its own that developed and is/or releasing it. And BTW, Sony is a Japanese corporation that happens to have other Sony affiliated companies such as Sony Pictures based in Hollywood. If your going to "blame" Americans or America, get your facts straight first because you know....America is about free speech and can't and shouldn't be stopped or limited and if it were, we would be like Korea, Russia, and China but you know what? We aren't! And the best thing about it is....you don't have to like it, watch it, eat it, or shit it out on the 26th when your tummy rumbles from eating too many HO - HO's.
  • :::slow clap::: Posted via the Android Central App
  • I guess you told me Posted via the Android Central App
  • He did actually. Free speech is why the damn movie was made. Also, again America did no make the movie. And again, this is not the first movie by a long shot involving the death of the leader of a country. It's not even the first one involving the death of the leader of North Korea. Also, supposed to be above making a film, but we in war in how many countries for how long? For what reason? And how many countries have used nuclear weapons? I'm not a stupid ass "we need peace" person, but I can assure you that America isn't the country leading the charge in that department. "I'm da Blur boys!" - Me with 1200 ping. Yes. • @Pirate Arr - Your mother should have swallowed you. But seriously, stealing is why we pay so much for things these days.
  • It's not stealing. Stealing implies ownership. And all this talk of mothers, both of you must've had bad childhoods. Torrenting is not stealing. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Torrents of paid content that you did not pay for is frickin stealing m8. "I'm da Blur boys!" - Me with 1200 ping. Yes. My Internet got worse.
  • Its called sharing. Am I inflicting damage to anyone? Nope. Am I killing children or causing movie studios to lose millions? No. I'm sharing with the community. Those torrents people seed or leech like the common user does isn't stealing simply because someone else before us shared that. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Did you pay for it? No, did they pay for it no. And did you make it? No. It's stealing. It's not your content to "share" how difficult is that to understand. I frankly don't give two shits if you torrent. But don't try to justify it and say it's a good thing. Pirating hurts the industry, and people that pay for their content get prices jacked because of people like you. It's that simple. "I'm da Blur boys!" - Me with 1200 ping. Yes. My Internet got worse.
  • Torrenting isn't stealing. Torrenting something you haven't paid for is. Just because you didn't walk out of WalMart with the Blue ray, doesn't mean you didn't steal. Posted via Android Central App
  • I rented this just as a point: In a free country we get to watch what we want. Regardless of Kim junk ew. Glad Sony/Google did this, and I'm not a huge fan of Rogan or Franco, but they went to work and made a movie. I'm gonna watch and be my own critic if weather I thought is was good or bad. And I paid for it. Thanks for the choice Sony and Google.
  • In a free country Sony wouldn't have canceled it over fear mongering. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Wow. I actually agree with this statement.
  • Being I rented it, they obviously didn't cancel it entirely. .....but I wish for my $ back after watching lol Posted via the Android Central App

  • How predictable. Only available in the US.
  • Well, considering we were the ones threatened.
  • I guess all of the backlash is directed at Americans, so having it available here is more of a big deal. Just saw it on G.Play, was pretty good, a few too many dumb d*ck and butt jokes, but I liked it, and was glad to be able to buy it. Now I'm off to get Sasha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, Team America and Die Hard for the patriotic / Xmas foursome.
  • Cant wait to watch this later. Totally paying the rental fee for this one.
  • What are the chances it'll be removed from the play movies catalog after you buy it and no longer in your library? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Infinitesimally small, as Google would likely be sued if they don't refund your purchase. Only if the Government came knocking would Google remove it, and even then they might refuse. Posted via Android Central App

  • The last time I went to the movies was to see Alien, I certainly wont see this one even if it was free.
  • I'll just wait for the thing to show up on Netflix. I doubt the original hack of Sony's emails and such was a publicity stunt, but I 'd bet they are playing off of it now.
  • That's a terrible publicity stunt. Especially to the people who's lives were ruined. Socials, and addresses made public? To sell a movie? Nah. Rogan's movies always do well anyways, so it's not like Sony had any fear of not making profit. Maybe not on opening day, but it wouldn't have flopped. So tell me again why a major corporation would kill it's stock to sell a movie? "I'm da Blur boys!" - Me with 1200 ping. Yes. My Internet got worse.
