Smaller Canadian carrier lifts lid on Google and LG's next Nexus phone

Update: Unsurprisingly, the Wind pre-reg page has now been pulled.

Original post: The Nexus 5 leaks continue, and today it's Canada's Wind Mobile that's let the cat out of the bag a little early. Wind's newly-published pre-registration page shows the render we remember from earlier leaks, alongside a full spec sheet for the unannounced device.

There's no guarantee that the spec sheet is 100 percent accurate, however it is an official carrier registration page, and what it's saying lines up with previous Nexus 5 leaks. In any case, the short version is we're dealing with a 4.95-inch 1080p display with Gorilla Glass 3, a Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of storage and an 8-megapixel OIS (optical image stabilization) camera. You'll find the longer version after the break.

We're expecting things to become officially official with regards to the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat towards the end of the week.

Nexus 5 specs outed on Wind Mobile pre-registration page

Can't wait!
Just sold my G2 via eBay, so I'm just about ready...
Of course I'm still rocking the Moto X, which is an incredible phone in its own right (and I won't be selling it for a while..)

There's just something special about Nexus devices...

Nexus 5 goes on sale prematurely in the Netherlands
28 OCTOBER, 2013
Silly Nexus 5, you're not supposed to be out yet. Yet it is – Dutch online retailer Belsimpel has put up the yet-unannounced Google phone on sale already. The SIM-free is a hefty €460 but then Nexus devices are usually quite expensive when you don't get them from the Play Store.

Posted via Android Central App

Pretty decent specs.

But I bet the Existing Moto X gives it a run for its money in functionality as well as price.

With the rumored pricing of the N5 16gb starting at $350 compared to the 16gb moto X off contract price starting at $475, how is that exactly a win on price for the MotoX?

Posted via Android Central App

Lol. Not even close. 720p screen, carrier locked, amoled, Google wallet with nfc. Weak effort.

Posted via Android Central App

Ok, but brace yourselves for the collision after the NEXT release, when the follow on from the Nexus 6 runs smack dab into the Nexus 7.

Yeah, Google's going to have to change the naming convention, at some point, assuming they continue the Nexus route.

Posted via Android Central App

I wouldn't be surprised, if Google named it that. Apple did it with the iPad, after all.

Posted via Android Central App

Or the Sony route. The phone is the Nexus and the tablets are the Nexus Tablet X (whatever number/letter they decide to use to differentiate them from each other).

Nexus P, Nexus T7, Nexus T10, Nexus Watch (if that happens)

I think you can figure out what's what. Its simple. And I think google, like apple, know that they have to change their naming schemes at some point. (Think iPad air)

Posted via Android Central App

Not necessarily. If that was the case, then the Galaxy Nexus would have been named the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 just happened to have a 4.7 inch screen and be the 4th generation Nexus device.

Posted via Android Central App

I don't know for certain, but I wonder whether Google are now creating a Nexus brand for their devices and the first phone to fall within it was the Nexus 4.

I could easily be wrong because I didn't follow it, but previously, it seems the phone naming was a bit random: Nexus 1, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and I also remember something like a G1 and/or G2?

If this is right and they drop the Nexus phones into the same naming convention as the tablets, the new Nexus 5 (from 5" screen size) would make sense and unless they create a 6" device, will keep the 5 as the name.

Just my guesses...

My money would be on the fact it stays a Nexus 5 as long as the screen remains 5". It looks as though Google names phones and tablets according to screen size.

Perhaps next year's will just be 5, or 5.2? The new Nexus 7 hasn't been renamed (I don't think - I haven't been watching it), or the new 10 that's is theoretically about to be released... [I have my doubts about a joint Nexus 5 & 10 release as Google Play in the UK still has stock and the price hasn't been dropped to clear stock and make way for the new Nexus 10].

I've had the money in my bank for what seems forever for this, I was gonna go out and but the G2, my patience is at its thinnest! Google hurry up and take my money!!!!!

Posted via Android Central App

Spec wise the g2 is still better, this will just be guaranteed the latest android version that's all.

Posted via Android Central App

How precisely is the G2 'better'? Being .25" larger isn't better by the way, that's astrictly personal taste.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

The G2 has a higher MP camera (and before we get into the MP debate, most people do expect it to be better than the N5's since the Googs has to cut costs somewhere) and will most likely have a significantly bigger battery (pending official specs). Otherwise the rest is the same, and you of course get the software advantage of a Nexus.

The camera has a good chance of being better on the G2.
Of course Google and LG might have spent some quality time with the N5 making the camera better, but who knows...

Oh so when Google post the 16gb version in the play store for $349 thats speculative? Or did you miss that?

Posted via Android Central App

So even tho they share the same Snapdragon s800, the same adreno gfx, the same ram type, and they are both made by LG, they are not the same device inside?

Posted via Android Central App

Same stock storage, same screen resolution, same cellular radios...

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

Bigger screen is a matter of personal taste. Many folks find larger phones unwieldy and not usable with a single hand. Battery is what it is, you get as much battery as fits in the device. Larger screen means that battery isn't going to be as effective as it is for a smaller screen.
The camera is pared down, but as anyone who I knows anything about camera's will tell you, it's not about the megapixels. The HTC One is something like 4mp, but takes great photos. Photo quality is far, far more about the photographer than the sensor.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

All other things being mostly awesome, I have a low opinion of the One's camera, and I have never considered the pictures it produced to be, "great".

The fact that the screen is larger, has a bigger battery and it has "better" cameras will make it more expensive. The screen is only .2 of an inch larger than the Nexus 5 and the batter is WAY bigger. The screen size difference isn't large enough to say the battery difference isn't a big deal.

I've been holding some cash for this, but if my friend can get me a Google Glass XE invite, I'm going that way instead.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

Yeah, definitely go the Glass route. I can't wait, for it to go mainstream, if it ever does.

That they're effectively quadrupling the size of the user pool suggests very strongly to me that it WILL be publicly available eventually (within a year perhaps?). Reminds me of the Gmail rollout, very limited, then give the participants invites to bring in more enthusiasts to spread the Good Word of Our Lords and Masters.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

Bad guess. Ceramic is more expensive than the metal they use in phones. High end sports cars use ceramic brakes, it's very expensive. Only material that's probably close in expense is the Kevlar Motos.

Verizon sucks monkey balls. I hope they NEVER SEE ANOTHER NEXUS EVER AGAIN.

Posted from my Galaxy Note 3 on Tmobile via Android Central App

Why? If anything, I wish Verizon would open up to Nexus devices. A Nexus device, with Verizon's cooperation, would only help the brand. Just an opinion.

Posted via Android Central App

And why do you care? Everyone on the Internet knows that Verizon "sucks monkey balls" according to you (despite them having the most coverage, the most customers, and the overall best ratings) and that you "know" stock Android is "plain and boring". Stupid hypocrite.

Most expensive, worst customer service, worst history with updates... The difference in coverage between the four major providers is largely negligible and amorphous. None of them are best everywhere, I've had more than a few occasions where my friends on VZW have asked me to turn on tethering so they could check email (I'm on StraightTalk). I've also had cases where I asked them to do the same... except of course VZW doesn't allow tethering.

Being popular doesn't make you the best, that's a basic logical fallacy. Windows is the most popular DT OS in the world, would you say their OS is best?

STOP TEASING ME!! Its like Im in one of those private rooms at a strip club, and google keeps showing a bit of thigh and then pulling the skirt back down..

That sounds like a shitty strip club, to be honest. It's "supposed" to be "no holds barred," lol.

Posted via Android Central App

Amish strip club. All you get in the main room is a view of some knee.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

Most strip clubs do not allow full nudity during dances, especially if alcohol is served. Uh, that's what I've heard.

I've traveled a lot in business. Don't judge me!

Sad to see these specs putting the device nearly 4mm taller and a tad wider than the Nexus 4. Original leaks had put it at a tad bit smaller actually than the Nexus 4 which sounded like a genius use of space. I suppose taller isn't as bad as wider and it's still 1/2 a mm thinner. Just let me have it now!!!

Dissappointed as well due to the size, I'd rather have a tiny bezel on a 4.5" screen with 720p, rather than a screen that the overwhelming majority of women and men won't be comfortable holding it! I wish the MotoX had an unlocked vanilla version.

I'm keeping my Nexus 4 due to the 5 being bigger and not smaller. And if I need to or want to replace the 4 then it looks like it's the Moto X or the mini Z1 if it ever makes it stateside.

Looks like the WIND Mobile's pre-registration page just got pulled. The carrier likely realized they pulled the trigger too quickly, but it's one of the most official confirmations we have that the Nexus 5 launch is among us.

I guess people don't root or flash roms, since android 4.4 really doesn't have major changes my G2 rooted & running CM10.2 is king if the hill.

Posted via Android Central App

At the end of the article it states well find out more about n5+4.4 at the end of the week....... Per who???

Posted via Android Central App

So glad I wasn't the only one curious about that ending statement! But I've been away from the internet for a day or so. Thought I missed something.

There are 2 possibilities I can think of. One is that Android Central know something we don't and it slipped out.

The other is that after all of the other "release dates" have passed, the next date in vogue is 31st, or failing that, 1st November, ie end of the week.

I'm hoping it's the former because I am bored with dreamt-up release dates...

Wish it came out for sprint but I know....it's just wishful thinking on my part lol.

Posted via my Samsung Galaxy Note® 3

I just hope the camera is good enough to ditch the One. OIS is a good start. Saw f/2.4 on the leaked G+ photo, which is ok.

Posted via AC App on HTC One GPe

The HTC One has a fantastic camera with the Zoe's and all but don't count on being able to put a picture from it on your computer or tablet or anything with a larger screen as a background, way to pixelated.

Posted via Android Central App

Android Central has the review units, just like every other popular tech site and are tight lipped by the NDA they've signed. Everyone knows it... :-D

Just checked. The page has gone. Lol another tease like Google Play Store did earlier. These guys seem to enjoy making fun of us _|_

I wish they had put an active digitizer in this. The Samsung Note series is popular for a reason.

Why?

Show me LTE and I will have to change my name... Sprint rocks so it counts

This is going to be a dam good phone based on specs and the price point not so much on the design though.

I cant help myself but slip in that i am typing this from my Note 3 and to me and based on my personal opinion is the best phone at this point in time.

Its so blazingly fast, the design is just to my liking, the features suite my needs, the screen resolution is so crisp and at 5.7" is just in one word perfect.

Im sure there will be many many happy people with their New Nexus 5, but wont be as happy as i am with my Note 3.

Posted via Android Central App

Two things gonna happen gonna order the phone and if I think screen is too small, return and get note 3

Posted via Android Central App

Like i previously stated the Nexus 5 is going to be an amazing phone, i was mearly reffering to the screen size and replying to ken in his post stating so, im sure there will be many happy customers in regards to the Nexus 5 and the price point and specs on offer are great.

Posted via Android Central App

Good luck on getting a N5, whoever plans to get one, I read 30,000 units will be up for grabs- that's honestly not a lot at all, they'll disappear in minutes.

We also read it will have a 3000mah battery. Don't believe every stupid rumor you read.

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

I'm surprised that after 100 comments no one has pointed out the most revealing aspect about this leak... Why is there a CARRIER pre-registration for a NEXUS device? Did carriers in Canadia sell the Nexus 4 directly? (unlike almost every other country where the Play store was the only place to get it)

Or does this mark the return of the Nexus line to carrier stores and/or retail? How would that even work? Carriers aren't gonna sell an un-subsidized device they can't hang a contract from (outside of Tmo)... Or will they? Could this signal a schism in the way the Nexus are sold outside the US vs inside the US?

Could it have anything to do with Sprint availability/activation? Or am I reading too much into it and it's just a promo page for the carrier to grab your email and redirect you to the Play store? I think it's rather curious, carriers had no incentive to advertise the N4, at least stateside...

Oh and FFS, ENOUGH TEASING & LEAKING, take my money already Google! (if it's actually available for Sprint)

I'm hoping the launch goes a little smoother, I thought the second N7 launch went better than the first, tho bugs still crept up... This being based off the very stable G2 I'd hope it's just a matter of Google learning from last year's demand and committing to solid availability. /fingers crossed

Several carriers in Canada carried the N4, most priced more expensive than the Play store. I don't think any carried it at launch, so that's a new development I think. Hopefully the Canadian play store will still carry the N5!

Incorrect, it's been widely leaked that the Nexus 5 will have LTE support across multiple bands (good for Tmo, AT&T, and Sprint). Dunno about Canadia but I think at least a couple of their carriers overlap with AT&T frequency-wise, not sure if for LTE tho...

Honestly, meh, until they deal with inadequate storage or sd slot. Google, you are blowing many potential sales until you wake up. That's the SOLE reason Samsung takes my money, year after year.

Google does not want removable media for the same reason Apple and Microsoft don't want removable media. Apple iPhones now never actually shut off, they stay in a low power state just like the new Xbox. If you can remove your battery they can't spy on you anymore.

Edit: I can't post links because AC blows donkey's so you will have to look them up manually on the US Patent website. Happy reading; welcome to 1984 for all of you sheep who have been ignorant for so many years. Welcome to the party 20 years late.

Patent Numbers:

11/358286
12/645485
13/094444

Oh and by the way unrelated but I was ignored when I leaked on Howard Forums and XDA [under the same username] six months before anyone else Verizon was dropping unlimited data plans, and I am sure I will be ignored again...

Verizon is going to force people out of grandfathered unlimited data next June; you will not be able to activate (subsidized or unsubsidized) any new phone on a Verizon account with unlimited data. Say Goodbye to unlimited data.

Oh and because you can't post links here in the comments (apparently Android Central wants to censor people) Google "Retention periods of major cellular providers" and you will find a great list [DOJ or ACLU Websites have it posted] of how your personal information is being used by Corperate America.

Edit 2: Wait, this A-Hole below me can post spam links to Apple products on an Android forum, but I can't post a link to the US Patent website or the DOJ? Seriously? Love the censorship. Go die in a fire AC.

If the 8gb option was so "great".....now its gone. Huh. 16 is still to small for my liking, but I do know that without a skin it should be sufficient. I like the fact they added a 32gb. IF it hits vzw...I may actually give vanilla a try

Posted via Android Central App

My preference would be a 64GB model or carry a MicroSD slot...or both. I know I'm not the majority, but I don't want to stream my music, and it's impossible on a hike, etc. where there is no cellular data coverage.

I have owned several nexus devices over the years and I have to say, this new N5 is not enough of a spec jump to get my monies. There are so many useful features that vanilla android doesn't have. Flash a rom you say.... well I have tried so many and I can attest none of them work great. But I have to have the latest android you say! Well, there is that, but I think the features packed into these newer phones, (G2, Note3, One, MotoX) outweigh the need to have the latest OS. Besides most if not all of these phones will get kitkat. I couldn't wait any longer, I went with the G2, and I have to say I will not look at the N5 at all now. BTW the camera on this G2 is the tits. I have never seen better images on a cell phone. Sure the nexus 5 adds OIS, but to a 8mp camera... really. After the last statement google made in response to the n4's camera, I was hoping the n5 would have some fantastic shooter. I am sad to see the new specs, and hope that all of you who do decide to buy it, are at least happy with what you get. By by nexus devices, maybe I'll be back one day....

What spectacular features is KitKat (that hasn't been announced yet) missing that other phones have?
And if all you're going to talk about is megapixels when it comes to cameras, just keep your mouth shut instead.
Stupid trolls...

If Samsung made penis implants, would they have TouchWiz? - dchawk81

I agree with you, I picked up a 16gb G2 last weekend, it is rooted and I am happy. Unbloaded OS would be nice but I can live with it until I flash a new ROM. I believe KitKat is all about marketing and the real update will be KeyLime Pie 5.0, which I will flash as soon as the nightlies get posted. If for some reason the specs were off and the N5 has a 13mp camera and 3gb of ram instead of 2gb, I will probably take back G2 this weekend.

Well at least I know the phone will be on a carrier (Wind) I'm willing to spend money on. Thanks for the post. Look forward to getting this phone. Yay!
