We're live in Barcelona, Spain for Mobile World Congress. Stay tuned to this very page for all the news we're covering here at the event, from Android to ... something that starts with Z but is also related to Android. That's how we do.

We're here the 13th through the 16th and running like crazy in a timezone that's conveniently many hours ahead of the US, so there's a better than even chance you'll wake up to fresh new announcements for the rest of the week. Peachy, innit?

Android Central

Remember the Acer phone with the massive 4.8-inch screen? There's a good possibility not, but we first went hands on with the device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and things have been a little quiet since it appeared at the FCC in April.

Now though, according to the official Facebook page of Acer Germany, the device is slated to launch some time in September for €499 ($710). The device page is live on Acer's official site, but with no information on price and availability.

Back at MWC the specs were pretty tasty, but as time has passed it by and the smartphone world is populated by dual core super phones, will the Smart still be able to cut it?

No word as yet on availability in other countries, but if you like to get your mobile movie viewing on, this could still be worth a look.

Check out our initial hands on video after the break.

Mobile World Congress 2011

Mobile World Congress is all wrapped up, and while it was a lot of work, it was a lot of fun, too.  And there was a hardware announcement or two in there as well!  We saw tablets, fire-breathing CPUs, Facebook phones (yes, I'm hanging on to that no matter what Zuck says!) and even 3D.  It was a lot to cover, and a lot to digest.  I'll admit, I was a bit intimidated at first, but we've got one hell of a great crew here at Android Central, and we weren't about to let little things like sleep stand in our way.  Hat's off to all my friends and co-workers here, as well as our trio of traveling editors who worked so hard to bring it to all of us.

But when it's all said and done, the most important part of Android Central is you guys.  Without you, there would be no reason to go halfway across the globe and get packed into conference halls filled with mediocre techno-music, just to catch a glimpse of whats coming from manufacturers.  While Phil, Dieter, and Daniel recover, we're going to ask you guys to share your favorite news from Barcelona this year.  So have a look at what all went down at MWC11, then head into the forums to let us and your fellow members know what you think is the best of Mobile World Congress 2011.

With Mobile World Congress all wrapped up for us and Phil back on his way home we figured we ought to go back and highlight some of the device and news announcements made during that time. You can check out our day one roundup for the first section and anything after that can be found below:

You look back and catch up on all the Mobile World Congress posts you may have missed here. And remember, our events page highlights where we are going next. CTIA here we come.

Android booth at Mobile World Congress

There's really only one way to describe Google's Android booth -- and even "booth" doesn't do it justice, it's more like half a hall at Fira de Barcelona.

It's epic.

First off, to borrow the infamous line from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer -- developers, developers, developers. Google had a couple dozen or so developers on hand to show off their apps -- a good many on the Motorola Xoom with Honeycomb. Some we saw at the Honeycomb event a couple weeks ago, others were new.

Dominating the joint was a giant Android robot, with a slide -- yeah, a slide -- snaking around it. More on that in a minute.

There were a couple of spots for passers-by to be Androidified -- that app that came out this week that turns your picture into an Android-type avatar.

And the smoothie bar -- yeah, there is a smoothie bar -- ¡Muy bien! You could get Cupcake, Donut, Froyo or Honeycomb flavors.

No, not done yet. Remember the showcase of Android phones back at Google IO in May 2010? It's now a train that stretches probably a good 50 feet or so, with just about any Android device you can think of on board. Stuff we've never seen, even.

Talk is cheap, though. Check out the photo gallery -- and more on that slide -- after the break.

Motorola Xoom silver

We've used the Motorola Xoom Android Honeycomb tablet on a number of occasions now, but never the silver one. Let's walk you through the differences:

It's silver. And it's expected to be the non-Verizon version that'll be available whenever it's available.

We also played around a bit with the Speaker HD Dock for the Xoom. The 10.1-inch tablet pugs into it horizontally and can play music over the speaker. And there's an HDMI port in the back for HD output. Thus the Speaker HD Dock, we imagine. Pics are after the break.

While we've been following Viewsonic's tablets for some time now, we haven't yet paid much attention to what, if any, phone efforts they've made in the past. We can't really promise that will change in the future now that we've had some hands-on time with the decidedly utilitarian ViewPad 4. It's not that there's anything wrong with a blocky, squarish, bare-bones Android phone, it's just that there isn't anything particularly inspiring to be had here. Granted, we had a prototype here, as they hadn't yet even loaded up Google's apps on the device.

Spec-wise, we have a 4.1" 800x480 screen, a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 with Quad-band GSM, 512MB RAM and 2GB storage, Bluetooth 3.0, a 5mp camera (720p video) on the rear and VGA on the front, and a 1400 mAh battery powering it all. Sort of amazing to be ho-humming specs like that because there's really nothing to complain about. Hey, it's running Android 2.4 Gingerbread, so maybe a little more wide-eyed wonder is called for - we'll see how we feel when we find out pricing and availability later this year.

Nvidia quad-core mobile processor

We're all still wrapping our heads around dual-core processors. So it only makes sense that Nvidia decided to drop the next next generation mobile processor on us at Mobile World Congress. Codenamed Kal-El (yeah, like Super Man), we're now ushering in the era (on the technical side, anyway) of quad-core mobile processors.

What you'll see in the demo after the break is not Tegra 3 -- it's a hot-off-the-press processor that's more powerful than anything you've held in your hand and that Nvidia says gets a 5x performance boost over Tegra 2. On top of that, it's got a 12-core graphics processor built in, with support for stereo 3D.

And on top of that is the capability to output video at a mind-blowing 2560x1600 resolution -- basically hotter than the sun, or something like that.

Effect on battery life -- it's really better to call it "power consumption" at this early stage -- well, Nvidia constantly stresses it's one of its main concerns. And, again, you have to remember that multiple cores doesn't mean an exponential increase in power consumption. And besides, we'll worry about that once it's in consumer facing devices.

So when will we see these quad-core chips in something we can buy? Nvidia tells us tablets around August, and phones by the end of the year. Yes, that soon.

Check out our demo after the break. You might want to sit down first.

quad-core tegra

NVIDIA rocked Barcelona with a demo of their upcoming quad-core Tegra CPU, project KAL-EL at Mobile World Congress.  It's all part of their roadmap which promises 75 times the performance of the current Tegra 2 by 2014.  Yes, you read that right -- 75 times the performance.  Back to the here and now, the KAL-EL, demoed on an prototype Android tablet had five times the raw performance of the current Tegra 2, rendering full screen video at 1440p running on a 2560×1600 display.

With it's 12 core GeForce GPU, this thing is going to be insane.  Partners have the chip in hand, and we're to expect devices, tablets naturally, using this gear by Aug 2011.  NVIDIA has more to say tomorrow, we'll be sure to stay on top of this one.  [NVIDIA]

HTC mwc booth

It's no doubt that HTC is still committed to Android, announcing five new smartphones and a tablet at Mobile World Congress this morning. Their booth is no different, as there are Android decorations all over surrounding demo units of the intriguing products announced.

Announcements this morning included:

Lots of exciting news. What has been your favorite announcement? Least favorite? Check out HTC's Facebook page for the full range of pictures of their booth in Barcelona. [Facebook]
