HTC Desire 820

IFA 2014

Today at IFA 2014 in Berlin, HTC has announced the latest addition to its mid-range Desire family, the Desire 820. Following on from the Desire 816, launched earlier in the year, the 820 maintains the same 5.5-inch display size and 720p resolution, while cranking the processor up to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 — an octa-core chip with cores at 1.5GHz and 1.0GHz. On top of that there's 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, both increased from the Desire 816.

Other notables include a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 lens, a whopping 8-megapixel front-facing camera and 2,600mAh battery.

Out of the box, the Desire 820 runs Android 4.4 KitKat, though HTC tells us the phone will be updated to Android L to take full advantage of the Snapdragon 615's 64-bit capabilities. All of that's encased in in a "unibody" chassis with HTC's trademark front-facing speakers, with a variety of glossy and matte color versions available.

The HTC Desire 820 will be available globally from late September.

Premium camera for stunning photos and selfies

For high quality selfies, the HTC Desire 820 features an 8MP front-facing camera, delivering impressive solo poses and effortless group shots. Enhancing the imaging experience, it also offers software that allows you to merge your features with those of a friend or celebrity for a completely original look, real time Live Makeup, which allows you to preview the image and set the desired level of skin smoothing before the image is captured and Photo Booth, where you can capture several moments in a single image.

Offering high-performance imaging, the phone's rear camera, with f/2.2 aperture and a 13MP BSI sensor, captures incredible quality images in both daylight and low light, so your photos will be bursting with detail even as the sun goes down. If photography isn't your strength, press and hold the shutter for rapid-fire and continuous shooting – ideal for capturing fast moving objects or for selecting your best image at a later date.

Advanced technology for ultimate performance

With the Snapdragon 615 processor, the HTC Desire 820 offers lightning-fast Cat 4 4G connectivity at speeds of up to 150mbps1. With an integrated LTE modem and the latest high performance multi-core, 64-bit processing power, entertainment lovers can revel in the ability to stream music, download films and juggle multiple social feeds or apps both smoothly and effortlessly.

Thanks to Qualcomm Technologies' processing capabilities, with separate performance and low power clusters within the processor for managing intensive and lighter workloads, the HTC Desire 820 also operates at maximum power efficiency, ensuring you get more from your phone for longer.

Lose yourself in content

Whatever your surroundings, the HTC Desire 820 is perfect for immersing yourself in your favourite content. Whether gaming, watching TV or creating momentous video and photo sequences with ZoeTM Highlights, you'll lose yourself in the rich, clear sound offered by the front-facing stereo speakers and two powerful, dedicated amplifiers of HTC BoomSoundTM. The vivid, 5.5" high definition display also puts big-screen entertainment in your pocket for the ultimate no-compromise experience.

With distinctive colour trims around the camera, buttons and flash, the two colours merge seamlessly into one another creating a slick look that really stands out from the crowd.

I don't care what anybody says; that is a handsome looking device with great "mid-range" specs! A good price point and HTC definitely has another winner on its hands!!!

Apart from 720p it seems decent. I mean 720p isn't the end of the world but at 5.5" that really is stretching things.

A handsome looking phone with great specs for a midrange phone.

Well done HTC!

But, what's the point of an 8MP front camera???

This makes my M7 look slow on paper by comparison. ;_;

one word, "Selfies". like them or loath them, its what the kids want. This is a classic kids christmas present, look at the colours and aesthetic, plus released in Q3, it has spoiled teenager written all over it. HTC is playing to the market.

Why doesn't HTC include OIS like with the HTC One (M7)

That's the only reason I continue to wait.

Probably to keep costs down. With a mid range device there's going to be a sacrifice or two. Besides that, this phone is looking pretty solid.
