What you need to know

  • Samsung is redesigning the hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, with the new mechanism offering noticeably better crease control.
  • The crease performance is reportedly comparable to the Oppo Find N6, which currently has the best crease of any foldable.
  • Both the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Fold 8 Ultra are expected to benefit from the improved hinge design.

Samsung might finally be fixing the display crease problem with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.

Samsung looks set to launch its new foldable phones later this month. The company has already kicked off its marketing campaign teasing the new devices, and while leaks have given us a good idea of what to expect, we're now getting closer to launch with new leaks confirming some of the bigger upgrades on the way.

According to tipster Ice Universe on X, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is expected to feature a redesigned hinge, with the hinge feel reportedly being noticeably different from previous generations.

The tipster says Samsung has made several changes to the folding mechanism, making it more decisive. In practice, this means the phone is no longer as easy to hold open at certain in-between angles as before, which has led to better crease control.

Ice Universe goes on to say that it's reached the top level in the industry, with crease performance comparable to the Oppo Find N6.

OPPO Find N6 review on Android Central

The Oppo Find N6 launched earlier this year as a virtually crease-free foldable. Having spent an extended period with it hands-on, it still has the best crease performance of any foldable phone to date. It sounds like Samsung is finally closing that gap with the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Android Central's take

I've used the Oppo Find N6, and the crease really is that good. If Samsung is actually matching it with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, this might quietly end up being the most underrated upgrade on the entire phone.

It's also worth noting that the tipster is referring to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series as a whole, which suggests the improved crease performance will carry over to both the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

For those unfamiliar, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 this time around will feature a slightly taller and wider, passport-style form factor, positioning it as a direct competitor to Apple's foldable phone later this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, meanwhile, will be the successor to last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7.

It remains to be seen just how much Samsung has improved the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. But if the rumors hold up, the display upgrades alone should make it one of the bigger generational leaps for the lineup.
