Moto G6 U.S. unlocked variant is now receiving the Android Pie update

What you need to know

  • The U.S. unlocked Moto G6 variant has finally started receiving the stable Android Pie update.
  • Android Pie update for the Verizon variant of the Moto G6 was rolled out last month.
  • In addition to the core Android Pie features, the update includes the May security patch as well.

The long-awaited Android Pie update for the U.S. unlocked variant of the Moto G6 has finally begun rolling out. In other markets, the official Android Pie update began rolling out for the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play in mid-February. The Pie update for the Moto G6 on Verizon was released over-the-air last month.

As noted by PhoneArena, the first phase of the Android Pie rollout for the U.S. unlocked Moto G6 began just yesterday. That means it might take at least a few days for the update to become available for everyone. However, going by the various Reddit threads on the update, it looks like quite a few owners of the U.S. unlocked Moto G6 have already received the major update. In case you have not received any notification yet, you can try manually updating your phone by heading to Settings > About Phone > System Updates.

(opens in new tab)
Who says you need to spend $1,000 to have a capable smartphone?

Some of the main highlights of the Android Pie update include improvements to Quick Settings, a redesigned Settings app, new emojis, improved audio controls, adaptive battery, adaptive brightness, and several UI changes. Apart from all the usual Android Pie goodies, the latest update brings the Android security updates through May 1, 2019. As confirmed by Motorola last year, the Moto G6 series will not receive any major OS upgrade after Android 9.0 Pie.

Even though the newer Moto G7 (opens in new tab) is undoubtedly a superior phone compared to the Moto G6, the older Moto G6 still remains a great option if you have a limited budget. For just a few hours more, the Prime Exclusive Moto G6 is on sale for just $110 on Amazon (opens in new tab).

Should you buy a Moto G7 or a Moto G6 for Prime Day 2019?

  • BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL with this update!!!!! Make sure you have disabled all PIN/Pattern Lock/fingerprint security BEFORE installing this!! This update has been reported for months by other users to change the PIN/pattern to an unknown value or otherwise leave the phone unable to recognize the correct pin/pattern. So far the ONLY solution to this seems to be a FULL FACTORY RESET of the phone. Seems really irresponsible to report on the release of this update on unlocked phones without making this huge problem known to those who might be about to pull the cord on this.
  • Hello. I would rather have read Luis's comment first, but all seems well. I have an unlocked G6 "international version" and I installed the update overnight. My pin has not changed. Pie is different. When you ask to see your open pages in Chrome, there are no little "X"s. To close a page slide it upwards.
  • Looks like I was confused. It's the open apps that are closed by sliding them upwards.
  • I didn't see this post until afterward, but had no issues with the update. Bio/PIN was active. It DID take a very long time but not surprised given the size..... I had to be patient.
  • No sign of the update on my Fi purchased Moto G6.
  • And confirmation from Motorola that the Google Fi purchased versions of the G6 are NOT getting the PIE update at this time. Looks like Google hasn't done the work on their end. Here is my tweet followed by Motorola's reply.
