AT&T pushes out update for HTC One M8, brings Android 4.4.4 and HD Voice

Update 1/20: Looks like AT&T let some update docs slip out where they shouldn't have been, and they've since been pulled. So if you don't see an update just yet, don't be surprised.

Original follows:

It's certainly no Lollipop (sadly), but AT&T has pushed out an update for its HTC One M8 today. While it's relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, the update does enable HD Voice on the handset, and brings it up to Android version 4.4.4 KitKat.

Here's a full breakdown of what this update brings:

  • Enables HD Voice
  • Updates Android OS to Android 4.4.4
  • Security enhancement
  • Bluetooth enhancement
  • Adds AMBS Cloud Messaging Integration
  • Adds Copy and Paste camera feature
  • Adds Usage Manager App
  • Improves battery performance
  • Updates AT&T Ready2Go
  • Updates Visual Voicemail

You can check for the update now through the software update option in the settings menu on your device. Happy updating!

  • Lol, if you're on atnt you'll probably be getting it in 6 months. They're almost as bad as it gets when it comes to timely updates Posted via the Unrivaled Note 4
  • I stand corrected
  • Annnnyyyy day now... Jesus Posted via the Android Central App
  • Aren't carrier versions of the M8 supposed to get 5.0 any time now? Why would they even bother with this? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Tells you it will be awhile before the AT&T version gets 5.0. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Because Atnt likes to be 3 months behind competitors when it comes to updates Posted via the Unrivaled Note 4
  • And that's why I bought a Nexus 6. Don't have to wait for first the phone manufacturer THEN the carrier to update. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Converted my M7 to GPE and haven't looked back... Posted via the Android Central App
  • I just converted my M8 to a Dev... And I'm more than happy. No need to wait for AT&T anymore...
  • Only thing I miss from sense is the camera, the liberty guys got a package to add it to the GPE m7 but I haven't tried it yet Posted via the Android Central App
  • You can actually get it from the Play Store.
  • I wish, incompatible on the m7 with lollipop. Posted via the Android Central App
  • can probably get someone to upload the APK for you somewhere.
  • Tried it. Doesn't work. The other htc apps like zoe weather and gallery work just not the sense camera. Too bad too because other than that the GPE lollipop on the m7 is great. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Converted my Note 4 to a Note 4 and it's still the same darn phone Posted via the Galaxy Note 4
  • Please tell me how you did it. Sunshine? I can't afford Sunshine at the moment. Is there another free way since firewater is no longer supported?
  • You cant afford one time 25$?
  • I spent more than 8 hours plating around trying to find a free option. Don't waste your time. Sunshine seems like the only way. I mean, it's worth it. Every penny.
  • How did you do that?? Posted via Android Central App
  • Unlock bootloader. Get S-OFF. Root. There's a few steps.
  • Lol...still 4.4.4? Carriers you suck.
  • Why because there was no need to apply updates that were already fixed by the skin, which is far superior to vanilla? That goes for almost any skin Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • Yeah, not really. Posted via the Android Central App
  • You don't think that most of the holes from the minor releases were either fixed or rendered moot by the skins? Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • Enjoy your touchwiz bloat Posted via the Android Central App
  • I do even though I prefer sense. Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • This guy has a burning hate for Nexus devices. Ignore him Posted via the Android Central App
  • You have no clue what you are talking about Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • Are you trying to say issues with the native OS are fixed by skins? Ya OK..... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Fixed or rendered a non-issue, yes Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
  • He's saying that when the manufacturer develops the skin to place over vanilla android they also fix some of the known issues with vanilla, so they basically kill two birds with one stone. This is what HTC did with the 4.4.3 update, they baked in a fix that was deployed to Vanilla in 4.4.4 instead of prepping another new release immediately to update to 4.4.4.
  • Just sad lol
  • Kikat is amazing. Android 5.0 can wait. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Keep telling yourself that. Posted via the Android Central App
  • How does Apple do it? I think Google (or device manufacturers) needs to start putting pressure on carriers.
  • Because they are the only manufacturers of IOS devices. That's how.

  • Poor ATT customers
  • Meanwhile other carriers prepare the 5.0 update.. ATT won't have theirs ready for another 2-3 months, but they'll probably still beat Verizon! Posted from my HTC One M8 via Android Central App
  • Wait, does the GPE on 5.0.1 M8 not have HD voice? I bought a used one from Gazelle and planned on converting it to GPE this week...but if stock doesn't get HD voice, I'll hold off I guess.
  • Why do people want Loliipop at all costs? Posted via the Android Central App
  • I'm of the same mindset as you. I don't want it on my turbo until they vet all of the issues and the software makers have caught up Posted via the Android Central App
  • Isn't even available for my AT&T M8 according to the update check in Settings. From what I read doesn't seem to be much of anything I want anyway. Seems no one talks o phones anymore anyway. All texting....
  • Lots of folks talk instead of texting... Heck I even used my voice to type this..... Lol Posted via Android Central App on my HTC M8
  • That was funny.... I really did LOL... well COL
  • 4.4.4. Newp. Not gonna to lie, I don't think about this stuff as much now that I have a Nexus 6. When I had the Note 3, I was constantly looking at when was the next phone update, rooting it, and all that fun stuff. The only thing the Note did was teach me to just settle for what I could get, and not to expect much more, especially not from AT&T. All AT&T cares about is software that no one wants, and buying the lowest Gigabyte phones possible, unless they're iPhones. Plus learning what it meant to disable and turn off apps. Oh and mentally ignoring that I had to turn off/disable or hide almost 53 (5frikin3) of said applications. That's really super superbly awesome and swell that they updated AT&TReady2Go. That's one of my main apps that I miss so so very much. That and ATT navigate. Oh my gosh is that app amazing. Good times. Good times. Anyways my Nexus 6 is behind too. I'm on 5.0.1 instead of 5. 0. 2. It's horrible I tell you. Absolutely horrible waiting and waiting for several days and maybe even 3-4 weeks at a time. Zenwatch rhymes with Winwatch. Coincidence? I think not.
  • Your post is dripping with sarcasm. Nice. I don't miss buggy Lolipop on my returned N6. Thanks for alpha testing for the rest of us! KitKat is the Windows 7 of the modern age. Lolipop in its current form is Vista... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Works fine on my m7, maybe your holding it wrong... Posted via the Android Central App
  • I think its more of a learning curve issue with these people. Lollipop is very different. Never have had an issue with my N6 Posted via the Android Central App
  • How can you tell? Were he said he misses AT&T Navigate? Lol Posted via the Android Central App
  • I think you meant Kitkat is the WindowsXP of modern. :) Either that or Lilipop is the Windows 8, you kinda got your OS chronology backwards.
  • Hey@9ersfan3 As one who used to be involved from the carrier side, it is combination of the agreement between manufacturer and carrier and the planning and testing and security that the carrier chooses to release that delays updates. The schedule is planned in advance as to what updates when. US is different than overseas on requirements and network security. Posted via Android Central App
  • Mine is rooted with Venom, I'm just going to wait for the M9 to come out to get on Lollipop. I LOVE the extra functionality of my phone the way it is on 4.4.3.
  • Just in time to be out of date... Posted via the Android Central App
  • No update for me yet..and yes I'm in the USA. I even changed the dates several times to see. Exactly when are they going to push this out? Posted via Android Central App on my HTC M8
  • Still no update and I live in Boston Posted via Android Central App
  • No update in Cleveland - I also pushed out the date, which might have been a mistake, because now I can't check for another 60 hours...
  • Is anyone else questioning this article since the source material is a link to an at&t release from May of 2014? And why isn't the Eye Experience mentioned?
  • I believe it is a nasty rumor - not sure how it spread so fast.
  • AT&T did have this update briefly on their site yesterday, when I went back to look after trying unsuccessfully to update my phone the listing was gone and I noticed the old update specs. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Are you the author?
  • Will i still be able to root and unlock bootloader with this update
  • And all those people that said that AT&T would skip this update for Lollipop... Now you know why I didn't believe you. Boom! From My S5
  • Did anyone receive the update? Posted via the Android Central App
  • noooooo!!!!! ATT you suck! seriously pulled the update after only one day... arrrrraghh!
  • I still haven't received this update Posted via the Android Central App
  • Never mind just saw that AT&T pulled the update... AGAIN!!!! Posted via the Android Central App
