So after some documents arose yesterday about the upcoming release of Android 2.1 for the Sprint HTC Hero and Samsung Moment, it appears as though some have gone ahead and used some internal Sprint connections to dig up a little more dirt. Several people have heard from Sprint that the release of this update is supposed to be March 26, which is slightly contrary to the April time frame previously given. Maybe Sprint is just trying to surprise everyone and release it a few days early, or maybe they just want to ensure it is rolled out before the release of the Sprint Nexus One or any of their other Android devices. Sprint users, cross your fingers, at this rate you will probably see the Android 2.1 update before the Droid does on Verizon. [via Engadget]

LOL So much for vanilla devices getting updates first! Everyone saying fragmentation is killing Android, and the friggin Sprint Hero will get updated before the Vanilla Droid.
I still care, and I hope it's true. I've seen so many nice apps that are for 1.6 and up.
This would be cool if it happens, but it doesn't make much sense to release an update on Friday when you have limited support over the weekend.

it would be nice, but I'm sure that it will be a date that just gets pushed back. All this update stuff is ridiculous. The phones should have all been on the same update schedule from the start and then we wouldn't be dealing with this.
Well seeing how the hero came out before the droid why would it not get updated before the droid. Yes while I agree that all of them should be on the same update schedule that is never going to happen with sense UI.
I suppose your right. But at least they could have all the phones without Sense UI update at the same time and then the phones with it update at the same time afterwards when they get all that stuff added in.

I agree. I love my Moment with 1.5. Even tho I'm sure 2.1 will bring some vast improvements I'm perfectly fine with waiting till it finally is released.
I've been using 2.1 for over a week with a ROM that was built from the Eris leak. Considering this is pretty functional, wasn't directly designed for the Sprint Hero (similar hardware, yes, but still needed some patch work), it does not disappoint at ALL. It was well worth it, 2.1 apps work like a champ (and are fun, too!) You really don't miss anything from 1.5, except that the power management is a little funny in this ROM. I seem to get OK battery life, but others have reported much worse. Still, 2.1 + sense and being fast and not laggy is awesome.
Well i used to have sprint and they pretty much kept their word on a lot of things especially updates and upcoming things for their customers. I used to have a Pre now Im with VZW annnnnd lets jus say i cant really say bad things about the service but i think everyone would be much happier if the carrier jus updated when they were ready instead of filling our heads with sweet nothings
So uh is the update gonna be available OTA or are people going to have to go in and get the update?
I'll be happy to see if Sprint does release this update for the HTC Hero, but as others have said and we all know how phone carriers are these days.

I can't believe all you people who are complaining that Sprint gets the update before Verizon. Do you know what versions the Sprint phones are running? 1.5. The Droid at least has 2.0, what significant differences come between 2.0 and 2.1? Multitouch, speech to text, and live wallpapers? That's nothing to sell your firstborn child about like everyone seems to be doing here.
I have a Droid and I'm anxious for 2.1 just like everyone else but it's ridiculous how selfish and stupid some people are being. Android users getting angry at phones because they're getting a major update before we get a minor one? Who cares? Good for them, they can finally try out all the exclusive apps. Get over yourselves and just wait patiently without throwing a fit.

There's a usability issue as well. Sprint/Verizon/Google/Sammy/HTC did anything that was necessary to get out a CDMA Android phone, and it shows. These phones need rooted and tweaked to be passable while running their current OS. 2.1 makes them great.

at this point, i'm a sucker for any sprint 2.1 news--even if it ends up not panning out. march 26th can come and go, and they could say it'll be april 1, and i'll still bite and pine. i'm a big a fool as any.

I will wait until Friday to become excited about this. Coming from a BB I learned to only get excited about something when it's officially released.
