Star Trek app

If you're counting down the days until J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in theaters, there's a new app in Google Play you'll want to give a look. Simply titled the Star Trek App, you'll be presented with missions to complete, and as a reward you'll get exclusive access to special content upon completing them.

The missions involve things like virtual scavenger hunts -- where you scan photos or other imagery, use audio, or are location aware. These use the latest tech from Qualcomm, such as the Qualcomm Labs’ Gimbal platform and Qualcomm Vuforia augmented reality tool. The Start Trek App is one of the first commercially released app to use these platforms, which we first heard about at CES.

In addition, users will have access to the latest news about the upcoming film, and be able to have assets like video, wallpapers, and images delivered directly to their device. The app is free, runs on Froyo or higher, and you can download it at the Google Play link above. The full press release is after the break.

A good trick with this is that I downloaded it on my ipad and my nexus 4 then opened the missions on both devices and scanned my ipad with my phone to get credit. (you are susposed to scan the image in a magazine or a poster)

While you're waiting for Star Trek Into Darkness in May, I'd like to perform a bit of blatant self-promotion.

<blatant-self-promotion>

I'm a huge Star Trek nerd. See post above. I went full nerd and wrote a full-length Star Trek fan fiction novel. It's online, it's free, and you should read it.

Because I said so.

very crashy for me on nexus 4 with cm 10.1M. won't stay open for more than a minute or so without force closing. it's a cool concept though.

You mispelled "Star Drek". I will not honor that piece of crap with the name Star Trek. Any true Star Trek fan will ignore the app, and steal the movie.

Can anyone tell me if I can get this on my Kindle HD 8.9"? I've ordered the tablet but I haven't received it yet - and a few Google searches brought me here, but no answers to my questions. So, any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance & live long and prosper.

P.S. My birthday is May 15th, and so is my Trekkie mother-in-law's birthday, so it'd be really sweet if we could see the movie that day.
