Ice Cream Sandwich

Google today officially announced at IO (follow our live blog) the next iteration of Android, labeled Ice Cream Sandwich. This is going to be an operating system combining the tablet OS and the phone OS. It is being called the one operating system that manufacturers will be able to put on any device.

Google showed off a range of devices that are currently running Android and the need for one OS to be able to power any form factor.

Ice Cream Sandwich will be released in Q4.

Nicee, ill be looking forward to it when my DX is out of contract. I'm in no rush to part with the X and get a phone now that will be obsolete in the months to come

I hope this means that things will finally get fixed for the tablets, and that the problems from Honeycomb don't end up on my phone....

Does this mean a new Nexus phone will be released in Q4 like the Nexus S was released with 2.3??? I wish they would've announced something about the next Nexus. I don't want to jump on the current Nexus when my contract expires just to have a new Nexus released a month later.

By this time 3 phones will have Gingerbread

Robbzilla says:

3phones already do. The Nexus S, the Nexus S 4G, and the Nexus 1 :)

Astrodroid says:

Gingerbread, we barely knew ye.

One OS to rule them all?

(sorry, it was the first thing that popped in my head!)

I reufse to get excited for this until there's an actual date for it's release. I always get hyped for the new OS but then get sad if/when it gets pushed back......lol

I hope that they release a nexas phone on verizon. That would be all I ask for

I couldn't agree more. All carriers should have at least one pure Google phone.

Nice. I'm looking forward to CM8 and, hopefully, a Nexus/pure Google phone on Verizon.

Didn't they just announced GingerBread 2.3.3 !!!
This getting outta hand

And in Q4 2012 we will still be waiting for carriers to push it to our phones.

Nice move Google. Announce an all new version of Android, when the current version released about 5 months ago is on how many phones? Yeah... Thought that one out real well did ya?

galfert says:

New version 3.1 is only for Tablet and Google TV. Ice Cream Sandwich (no version number given yet) won't be out till Q4 2011, and by that time Gingerbread 2.3 should be on the majority of phones.

npunk42 says:

I would have named it Mud Pie, or Its-It. Ice Cream Sandwich sounds like it should come with tomatoes and sprouts.

The carriers are waaaaaay tooooooo slooooooo wirh updates while Google rips through them like theres no tomorrow. Add to that the price of the phone, the length of contract with the carrier, and the fact that 9 monthes down your top of the line phone is barely a "midtier", and you get a recipie for disappointment.
Manufacturers or carriers really need to do something to speed things up with updates.

Chill out people! Q4 is 5-7 months away!

Astrodroid says:

Chill out. Chill. Ice cream. ha ha.

Sweet, I'll be able to upgrade my phone in the beginning of 2012. I hope that Verizon releases a Vanilla Android device. I am so sick of all of the skins the manufacturers put onto the phones that just makes getting updates a pain the ass. Seriously, my Tbolt still has Froyo and Gingerbread has been out for how long now? They sure like to take their sweet time. :(

ChillFactorz says:

I would love a, Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich, but alas I am with AT&T. At least we can stay healthy with Frozen Yogurt, but it's just not the same flavor.
