In Short

Android 8.0 Oreo is the 2017 update to Google's mobile operating system, bringing iterative upgrades and a host of performance improvements to phones, tablets and smartwatches.

Many of the biggest features are behind the scenes, including improvements to battery life and performance thanks to background limits, which forces developers to spend more time thinking about how they want to get things done behind the scenes.

But there are some major improvements that you will see, especially on the notifications side. Colored notifications and notification channels, along with icon badges, all add up to a much better experience, especially when you receive hundreds of them a day.

And there's picture-in-picture, which debuted last year on Android TV but has now expanded to phones and tablets. Along with multi-window, PiP should make consuming media and getting things done a little more doable on that smaller display!

Finally, there are new emoji and a whole host of smaller-but-still important improvements.

Android Oreo has been released initially for the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, and Pixel C.
