How to change the theme of your PlayStation 4 home screen

You're right! That default blue background is boring! You've probably been hoping that you could change that drab background to something more exciting. Looking at precisely the same thing every time you fire up your PlayStation 4 can become quite tedious. Thank goodness, there is a better way. You can change the theme on your PS4, and the options are endless!

How to set a prebuilt theme

There are two methods of changing the theme on your PS4. You can install a prebuilt theme by selecting it from your theme library or downloading it from the PlayStation Store, but you can also create a totally custom background by using one of the screenshots you've taken of your gaming sessions.

Here's a quick and easy guide on how to use one of the prebuilt themes either already in your theme library or after you download from the store.

  1. From your home screen, move up and over to select Settings.

  1. Scroll down and press the X button on your controller to select Themes. Press X again to see your current available themes.

  1. Press X to select a theme or you can scroll down to the bottom to find more in the store.

How to set a custom image as your home screen wallpaper

The PlayStation 4's screenshare feature, which granted is common on other consoles, is great for social media, sharing your greatest moments, or to just decorate your screen. With so many games now buildling in photo modes, you have plenty of opportunities to make a background-worthy image. Once you have one you like, here's how to set it as your background.

  1. Open Settings and select Themes.

  1. Select custom.

  1. From here choose Select Image.

  1. You can now select any screenshot you have saved.

  1. Now you hit Apply.

The ability to use screenshots as your background makes the options quite literally endless! Sometimes as I am deeply ensconced in a game, I think that specific images would be perfect as a background for my home screen. With a simple screenshot, I can make that a reality.
