Google's September 29 event is official

Mark your calendars, boys and girls, because Google's September 29 event is now official. It will take place at 9 a.m. PT, and we're expected to finally get a good look at the hardware offerings Google has up its sleeve for the final half of the year and more.

Nothing is confirmed until Google announces it, but we're expecting to get a good look at Google's next Nexus smartphones, rumored to come in two flavors, along with a new Chromecast and more.

In any case, keep it locked to Android Central on September 29, where we'll be bringing you all of the latest Google news right from the event.

  • Why take the day off when you can just follow along at work on the company's dime? lol.
  • This is the greatest time of the year!

Its the most wonderful time of the year! I'm using a Note 5 doesn't mean I like it!

  • WIll they allow us to live stream the event? I imagine so>?
  • Not much precedent for that, and all of these events seem to be different in how they're handled.
  • YouTube.com/Google will have the live stream

  • Oh brother... It is just another phone. Hopefully they nail it this time and get one completely right. Great camera, great battery, some real additions to the skin they put on aosp... Things lime that are important +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++

  • Well, it's a Google event.
I'm sure the event will be about many exciting new things.
  • I hope so. Wish they would throw a few tablets in there. +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • I doubt it. Investment in tablets would be risky for most manufacturers and I don't think tablet products will be a featured element in this Google event. Demand for tablets has flat lined for over a year especially among consumers. Lenovo has made a little headway by focusing on special purpose business and medical uses. http://techcrunch.com/2015/07/12/forrester-tablet-sales-have-plateaued-b...

  • Still loving my Nexus 10 and there really isn't anything it won't run... I've found little reason to buy a nexus 9... when they fall in price even more maybe but idk. I'm just ready to upgrade my nexus 5 finally! I also noticed bestbuy has the nexus player selling for half price... I wonder if they also know something about new google tv hardware coming????

  • I like stock tablets better than some of the others, mainly Samsung. There is no place for the button on a tablet. Phone Yeah, tablet no +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • True. I don't know why Samsung moved from the on screen buttons (on galaxy Tab). If they were to put it back on Tab Note, I would buy one for sure. Multi window and pen should be mandatory on Tablets :) via AC App on

  • u use an iPad? i still use my Mini, it's still the best tablet I've tried, but it's kinda been collecting dust since i bought the nexus 6. and did u ever grab a Chromebook? I gotta get one and was thinking about that flip.
  • Barely touched my n9 since I got the n6 last week too. Love this thing. N6/9

  • No I am in analysis paralysis with the stuff I am going to buy. Still deciding on phone and on chromebook/tablet. I think I have decided on the flip though. It checks the boxes and I can wit to see if there is a black Friday deal. I am still using my old tab 3,note 12.2 for work and not that Windows 10 got reinstalled, a Windows tablet for media. I have way too much crap laying around. +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • yeah other than the Nexus 6 for $350 "analysis paralysis" has been a common theme this year! definitely grabbing a chromebook, most likely the Flip, by 10/18 (son's bday). I'll let u know how it works out. slimmed down inventory this year. sold the ps3, wii, macbook, ipad 2, stereo/surround sound, and got rid of the landline phones. exchanged for a dell xps, ps4 and a couple bluetooth speakers. I just don't need or want surround sound anymore and like the flexibility.
  • Last brat took all the console systems off to college so they are gone. Time to get a chrome cast +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • wow, my son is gonna be 12 and the thought of him actually taking all of his (my) toys outta here one day never crossed my mind. what excuse will I use for my wife now? ... "honey I know we got him a Chromebook last year, but that was 5th grade." or, "honey, Xbox One is more educational than his PS4." then there's the ole reliable, "well if you don't think he should have grand theft auto, that's fine, but all the other boys will call him a baby and he'll have nobody to play with." ... that last one actually happened. and at 3AM the next day she walked into "my room" and called me an a$$hole as I approached my 5th straight hour!
  • Lol... That's great... +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • separate bank accounts have prevented many arguments. it's when i try and rationalize why it should come from the joint account that gets me in trouble!
  • See I just have mine conditioned that it is inevitable. The calender year changes, I am getting new gadgets. We have joint accounts but we also have the ability to spend what we want, within reason. By that I mean we have an understanding that if it doesn't get taken advantage of, and the bills are paid, neither of us are gonna quibble about 100-300 here or there. I do have to say though, if I switch jobs it is gonna be tough. I get to quell my '' habit'' with work testers. If I leave my job I may turn into one of those people that put their phone on swappa every other month... +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • This I totally agree with stock android nexus tablets rule! And uh... the phones do too... nothing quite like an ulocked bootloader... Still remember the nightmares we went through with Sammy original 10 inch tablet... ODIN omg I hated that stuff... then they sent out firmware that locked our bootloaders and have been doing it basically ever since.
  • Well their is the nexus 7 sooo? Not to mention the crop of 7" phones this year. Next year will 8" and so on. Innovation baby!
  • Blah blah all I hear is I'm a dirty Sammy tramp. Posted via the Android Central App

  • How the hell are they gonna nail it when one of the two has a snapdragon 810?
  • and 2015 could've been such an amazing year, plagued mostly by the 810 and battery performance. I still think the Hauwei Nexus, assuming it does have the 810, will be a solid phone despite the excessive throttling. I don't think they'll be much of a noticeable difference, but that's not the point. if I buy a Porsche, I don't want to be limited to going 80mph, despite that I might never go over that speed. it'll be interesting to see if they did anything similar to Sony with regards to the potential heating issues.
  • I suspect what will happen is the camera/battery specs will be disappointing, and we'll have to wait for reviews before reaching a conclusion. I think the battery will be underwhelming, only because the leaks illustrate a thinner phone, and 2015 has crushed my hopes for battery performance. I actually think the camera will perform well, the technology has progressed substantially recently, so it should at least be similar in quality as the Pure. if people think it's gonna perform anywhere near Samsung they'll be disappointed. Personally I'm much more interested in the software, specifically Permissions and Doze as well as the camera software (even though camera isn't a huge priority for me, um still interested).

  • Yeah I am with you there. It helps that I just got tired of it, but the biggest reason was Android finally got out of the growing phase. +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • for a repackaged phone I was surprised with the quality of the Blu phones. had my first year spin with one earlier this week and overall I was pretty impressed. definitely get a lot for your money, and hopefully as they continue to grow the support will be there. good luck!
  • Put a big battery in it, decent camera and not too big of a screen. Keep the snappy, simple Android and boom, I'll buy. Posted via the Android Central App
  • depending on what you consider to be a big battery and "not too big of a screen," you might be disappointed. we haven't even been getting large batteries with larger displays this year, so I doubt Nexus of all brands will be first to meet that requirement. as far as the battery, I expect the specs to be underwhelming, but performance similar to OP2 and MXP. it's not gonna like Samsung, but I think a notch below them and the G4 is a reasonable expectation.
  • Quick charge makes some of this not as important as it used to be...
  • This could be the first Nexus i buy if the battery is legit Posted via the Android Central App
  • I am so ready and will probably break my F5 key hoping it's released that same day
  • Are you excited about having a phone with a snaptoaster 810? Or are you going with the LG Nexus?
  • Hahahahahaha snaptoaster LoL Posted via the Android Central App
  • They should release their nexus device prior to Apple so I'm not tempted to pick up Apple's latest offering. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Oranges are better than Apples. The orange provides more vitamins, minerals and fiber compared with the apple. It also provides more calories, but the additional energy it provides in the diet is balanced by the additional nutrient benefits. Including both fruits in the diet is beneficial, but if choosing just one is required, the orange is a healthier selection.

  • Man I'm really hoping Google goes big time with this event and announces the new Nexus. They haven't really had anything big since the Galaxy Nexus announcement, it was pretty mainstream. I still remember when Matias Duarte went up on stage and introduced ICS for the first time. Everyone was so excited. Posted via the Android Central App
  • I'll be keeping an eye on the new Nexus 5. I tried the Moto X Pure Edition but it was just too big for my liking. I'm pretty sure the size of the 2014 Moto X is as big as I'd like to go.
  • Will it work on verizon?? hahahahahahahahaha...no :'(
  • Why wouldn't it... The Nexus 6 worked on Verizon... Posted via the Android Central App
  • Oh I didn't know that, you could buy it from Google Play Store and use it on verizon?? No verizon bloatware or branding??
  • yes. Nexus 5 | T-Mobile $30 Plan

  • Well I actually found this article saying it didnt work when it was initially launched like it did on the other major carriers...http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/03/28/shocker-even-after-launching-the... so meh, :P
  • Nexus lost me this year. Too large again. 5.2" screen and much larger bezels than Nexus 5 means it's ended up too physically large for my liking. Only a fraction smaller than the Moto X Play I returned for being too big. That's why I've got a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact on preorder for delivery on the 29th. I'll have to say goodbye to fast updates, but everything else will be the same as, if not better than, the Nexus hardware.
  • I totally agree, they shouldn't be making phone's that are bigger but with the same size screen, that's going backwards. Posted via Android Central App
  • Snaptoaster 810 = I'm looking forward to next year's nexus when its rocking the 820. In the mean time I'm more than happy with my nexus 6. It's still the fastest smartphone available out of the box. The 805 is an absolute beast
  • Rumors are that Nexus 5X had 808 SD
  • Yes, I know. But prefer larger phones personally
  • The 805 has a more powerful GPU than the 808. Posted via the Android Central App
  • The Snapdragon 805 is probably the best Snapdragon chip out there right now. Still extremely speedy and capable even in the realm of the Exynos 7420. Here lies the "2016 Flagship Killer". It got slayed by 2015 flagships like the LG G4 being used to post this.
  • No doubt. It can't really compete with the 7420 on CPU intensive benchmarks but in real world performance with optimized software and all 4 Krait cores active (the way it runs on the nexus 6) its one powerful chipset
  • Of course. And real world performance is all that matters. Benchmarks mean nothing if the software experience isn't properly optimized. Something that Samsung is close to achieving (they need to make the memory management a little less aggressive but it doesn't seem to be as bad as it used to be, so I give them props for that) and earlier versions of LG UX (LG UX on the G3 is a lagfest). Here lies the "2016 Flagship Killer". It got slayed by 2015 flagships like the LG G4 being used to post this.
  • Ya, that's all Samsung needs to fix to take full advantage of the hardware. If it weren't for that every device with the 7420 would easily be the fastest available. I'm just a bit angry about it because it's obvious Samsung has the entire industry beat in the hardware department. And that includes Apple. Why allow devices with inferior specs to outperform their industry leading hardware in any way? Obviously they don't care, and thats the problem. When an iPhone with 1 gig of RAM holds more apps in memory than a note 5 that's unacceptable IMO
  • Agree
The complete package including functionality and usability beats chipset benchmarks everyday.
  • Absolutely
  • So is the Snapdragon 800, seriously this things blows away everything I've seen. (well, this and the Nexus 6 are neck and neck, probably due to 1080p vs 1440p) I really don't see a need for anything newer than the 800 yet. Nexus 5 | T-Mobile $30 Plan
LG G2 | Verizon Wireless No Plan
  • Yup, there isn't much of a difference between Krait 400 and 450. Clock speeds, optimizations for sustained workloads and whatnot. But overall they're about the same
  • Technically, the main difference between the 805 and 801/800 is the Adreno 420. Simply put, the 805 is the better fit for 1440p displays.
  • No doubt. I was just comparing the cores though
  • Hoping for a new Nexus 10 tablet.

  • I'm kind of hoping for some Marshmallow news. anyone else?
  • What else is left to say about it? +++ Insert witty signature, watch as others not get it, profit +++
  • They've had plenty of time to look at iOS 9 so I'm sure they've been able to reverse engineer some new features to add to Marshmallow.
  • Google - just make sure Android M is of best quality when you release. N was a mess until 5.1.1 and please do not repeat it.

  • My N5 battery couldn't hold out long enough for their release. The damn battery barely held a 4 hour charge on standby, and maybe 1.5 hours with active use. I ended up having to get a Moto G (2015) last week, which is pretty damn good. I may still buy a Nexus that they announce, but unfortunately for Google--I'll likely not be an early adopter this go around like I was for the N7 (2012) and N5.
