What you need to know

  • Fitbit is rolling out a new update for the Verse 3 and Sense smartwatches.
  • Update 5.3 adds new status indicators for sleep, do not disturb, and low battery.
  • The update also brings a new outdoor exercise mode to the Exercise app.

A new update has begun rolling out for the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3, which brings a few visual changes and features for the devices.

The update is adding new status indicators to the watch that will make it easier to discern when certain settings are turned on, like do not disturb or sleep mode. Additionally, users will not be able to more easily determine when their battery is low thanks to the new low battery indicator. A final new indicator will show when your watch isn't connected to your phone.

These status indicators will appear at the top of the watch face and will disappear after three seconds. Fitbit notes that in order to make them appear again, you just swipe right, and they'll appear atop the quick settings menu.

You can turn these indicators on or off by navigating to Settings > Display and toggling Status Indicators.

Fitbit also highlights new exercise modes in the Exercise app, which can now "track outdoor activities like kayaking, skiing, and more." Lastly, the update includes bug fixes and improvements.

The new Fitbit OS update 5.3 should be rolling out now on two of the best Fitbit devices you can buy right now. If you're not sure how to check, we can help walk you through how to update your Fitbit, a process that will require your smartphone to download and install the update.

Our own Fitbit Sense hasn't received the new software yet, so it may take some time to roll out to everyone, although Fitbit notes that it should reach everyone "in the coming weeks."
