Sprint to unveil WiMAX-enabled HTC Supersonic next week at CTIA, says WSJ

The Wall Street Journal says Sprint will let loose the oft-leaked HTC Supersonic next week at CTIA, and that it will be the carrier's first WiMAX-enabled Android device.

The device is expected to be the centerpiece of a presentation made by Chief Executive Dan Hesse during the CTIA Wireless trade show Tuesday. Sprint and HTC declined to comment.

For those of you pining for a new Android device on Sprint, you may soon get your wish. The Boy Genius Report has snagged a shot from Sprint's inventory screen that shows the LG LS680, clearly listing an Android handset. (Don't get crazy about the $1 listing, that's likely just a placeholder.)

While Verizon & AT&T have aligned themselves with LTE and T-Mobile is sticking with 21Mbps HSPA+, Sprint has heavily invested in a WiMax network by Clearwire for their 4G-speed offerings. So it's really no surprise that Sprint is planning to release a WiMax-speed smartphone in 2010. What is surprising is that some reports are pointing that device to be a Samsung-built, Android-powered smartphone. Android, Samsung, and WiMax? We're already sold.

There are some rumors floating around that Sprint is currently internally testing the HTC Hero. Sprint has so far avoided Android, even going as far as saying Android simply wasn't good enough yet, is the HTC Hero the first Android device that's 'good enough' in Sprint's eyes? It seems so.
