Sanyo Zio

You can call the Sanyo Zio low-end, you can call it a remarkably good phone for $99, you can call it retro what with the trackball ...just don't call it Zay-Oh or Zee-Oh. It's pronounced Zai-Oh, most Sprint reps pronounce it Zee-Oh, but we've also heard Zai-Oh on occasion. Obviously we'll be all over this very very important vowel issue in the coming days and months.

The Zio is light (almost too light) with a nice curve around the back and a matted finish surrounding that 3.2 megapixel camera. It's sporting Sprint's ID interface - which if you didn't hear is essentially Sprint's own custom Android skin that easily switches between branded experiences of your choice - from ESPN to Disney to your own small business if they're feeling ambitious.

More photos after the break - Update: check out the quick video demo after the break, which features the Lo2yo Latino Sprint ID screen. Update 2: video fixed. Mac Haters: feel free to mock iMovie.

Just got an e-mail from Sprint about this device. The picture shows the Zio with a Yahoo Search Bar, Yahoo Mail and a Yahoo app. Is this phone... Yahoo'd?

vtective says:

Or maybe it is just the "Yahoo ID" that is installed.

Go Android! says:

Dang all of these are Yahoo'd. I'd prefer Bing any day over Yahoo.

*Edit* It's just the Yahoo Sprint ID that they market the phone with.

It looks aight/lame too me... Give me that BlackBerry/Droid hybrid lmol

joshua.worth says:

Yeah just got the same email... Yahoo is lame... Its a google phone can't we just have Google and call it a day?

I have played with this phone on cricket. Its ok but the keyboard is just horrible, the resolution leaves a lot to be desired, and its just to damn light. Plus I felt like I was going to break it before it registered my touch.but for the price you can't beat it.

Q-fugee says:

Except the LG Optimus does beat it, by 50 bucks. What's the point of this phone and the $50 price difference if they're both on the same carrier?

Hi guys. Can i let you smile for a second? do you know what does it mean "ZIO" in italian? "Uncle"

Sanyo "Uncle"....as a good friend.

Have a nice day/night (it depends on the opposite of time: here is early morning.

Jonneh says:

Ooo....yikes. She had a lot of problems with that phone lol. I would be embarrassed if I had to show a phone for everybody and my job was to make it look cool so everyone would want it, and then that shit happened. Over and over again lol.

Jonneh says:

Also, video stops working at 1:40.

Q-fugee says:

That phone keeps blocking the legs you were trying to film.

Call me crazy, but this phone is starting to grow on me, kind of sucks though had to take more than 1 tap sometimes to get a response from the touchscreen

A latin android device! Wow! Android really is expanding!

I just got my hands on one of these, and love it. For me, light is good. I keep it in my pocket, and barely even notice this thing. Call quality is terrific, and I've had NO problems with the keyboard. I should also mention that prior to this, I got the Samsung Transform for a week. Now *that* is a piece of junk. Kept getting acorn crashes and com.android.phone crashes. Would *not* communicate with my Audi bt (paired and connected, but crashed and burned when it tried to transfer contacts). Even tried a second Transform, same issues. The ZIO worked perfectly from nanosecond 1.

Have had the Zio for about a week and know it only from an iPhone that I had for about a day, bad timing. My only complaint is typing in general on these things with the screen. But that may be a learning curve thing as I feel I am getting a little better than I was a week ago. Other than that, for right now I think this is a very good product for starters, got it free with new Sprint activation.
