Got BBM on Android? Here are the basics.

BBM is starting to get (kinda-sorta) rolled out today on Android, and to get folks acclimatized, BlackBerry has posted a few how-to videos on their YouTube channel. Videos show how to manage groups, how read/delivered receipts work, handling multi-person chat, checking status updates, sharing files, and adding contacts.

You'd think for the occasion they'd shoot these on an Android or iOS device of some kind, but the overall UI doesn't change much platform to platform. It's all pretty straightforward, though potentially useful for those of you that managed to get in line for BBM early.

How many of you guys are going to be trying it out? Those that aren't, are you happy with your existing instant messaging options, or is there room for some competition?

Not compatible with the Nexus 7 either. Typical BB...

mhinc says:

It's a TABLET! BBM isn't even compatible on the BB Playbook! Stop your whining! My LORD!

THANK you! He really is ridiculous. We get it, he doesn't like it. Crazy idea: don't download it.

Restart your phone. It worked for me

bold1193 says:

Restarted and worked for me, thank you. Maybe it is because I used to have a blackberry, no idea.

dchawk81 says:

The part about being accustomed to forced restarts, you mean?

bold1193 says:

Lmao good one! Yes, I do remember those Haha. But no, I pulled out my battery and rebooted.

ryanjma says:

I am as well. I restarted my phone twice, and even uninstalled the app once. Same results.

graze81 says:

I'll try it......when BlackBerry approves my email address. When will that be? Who knows!

ericrangel76 says:

I signed up a while back and I have it running on my Note 2. Just need some contacts to verify if it's working correctly. Lol!

dchawk81 says:

Therein proving its irrelevance.

Why download, install, and wait for this when you have no contacts?

ken512 says:

Can't download from play store taking forever with no progress

I don't know anyone that uses BBM. Is there a good reason to use it over something like hangout?

Works with a dead operating system?

Seriously though, BlackBerry has good security but that's the only benefit for most people. A lot of my friends still use blackberry's though

In its current form - not really. When bbm for android is updated with voice and video it may be a contender.

brendilon says:

When it has voice/video it will be almost on par with Hangouts. Still won't have a desktop client.

You know how comedians will run a joke, then much later in the routine put something on top of that joke to make it funny all over again?
So yeah I'm chuckling as I wait in "line"

Why would I want to use BBM on Android when I've got WhatsApp??

keith2k1 says:

For me and my family, What's App was a nightmare. Too many crashes. I'm the only one in my family right now that uses an Android device and the best way for me to keep in contact (besides email) is BBM because of their locations. I have a brother here but my other brother and sisters are in Brazil and they all have Blackberry devices so BBM for me is the clear choice.

Chanlion says:

It's free.

Because WhatsApp forces you to provide you phone number, started to charge after a year, and it's UI is absolute SHIT

Suntan says:

What I was thinking. Perhaps BBM is better? no matter. Whatsapp is installed and configured on the phones I want to text to. Not worth the hassle to get other people to install BBM even if it was amazing.

-Suntan

Im know some people with bbs but not many but I agree why would I want to use BBM when I have whatsapp

Worked fine for me! It feels good to be home with BBM friends! The only reason i little bit missed bb....not anymore!

Amen!

If anyone registered an email at www.bbm.com before the "first" release, you should be able to go in right away.

What are all the RIM employees doing these days? Job hunting? How can a company that big - with so much software expertise - totally blow something like this?

IAMZWANEE says:

They let go of like 4000 employees a few weeks back...

Besides, bigger companies have done worse. Just look at GTA Online

Now my mission to convert people to bbm begins!! lol

robthomps82 says:

I was put on the waiting list, the BBM icon was planted on the notification bar and wouldn't close out completely until I finally Uninstalled it. When I went to BBM after attempting to set it up, it would always go to the setting up BBM screen. I'm not going to use BBM for a few weeks from now until they get their act together. I may just not use it at all and just stick with Facebook messenger or just plain texting.

Posted via Android Central App

mhinc says:

Works just fine for me! Install was smooth, no issues, maybe it's the operator!

Tony Romano1 says:

Same with me. I hate notifications I can't clear so goodbye.

Posted via Android Central App

IAMZWANEE says:

If you would have restarted your phone it would have solved everything. You can also choose to not have the icon in the notification tab.

No, it doesn't work on their own tablet either.

I have it and love it. its good to get it back. For all of you old BB users out there all you need to get started is your BB ID and no waiting in line.

itr themes says:

Works great so far on my LGOG. It knew I had a BBID tied to my email address, but gave me a new one anyway...that was kind of weird. Now to build up my contact list again!

Those are not competitors but complements BBM, Whatsapp has access to the phone's contacts list, BBM should add Invite by Whatsapp, Facebook, Hangouts, iMessage, Kakaotalk, etc to the existing barcodes, sms, nfc.
Best of both worlds, instant, reliable, secured, & private communication with insecured invitation LoL.
