MIUI 7 is the latest operating system from the Chinese company Xiaomi, which was announced during a media event in New Delhi, India. Currently, MIUI has over 150 million users globally, and the latest iteration of the operating system brings with it a number of great new features, such as themes, enhanced battery life, animations and more.
On stage at the event, Xiaomi's VP, and ex-Googler, Hugo Barra unveiled the OS in all of its glory. MIUI 7 is based on Android 5.1, and the over-the-air update has already started rolling out for the Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 2A, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi Note, and the Redmi Note.
MIUI 7 brings a host of changes along with it, from data savings to new themes and everything in between, here are some of the changes users will notice. Xiaomi has partnered with Opera to bring a new feature, Data Saver, to the OS, which may enable data savings of up to 50 percent. Additionally, the OS will bring along with it some new themes. Themes have been a huge part of the MIUI OS, and Xiaomi is now building upon that, with animated lock screens and more.
Xiaomi was able to improve the load times of stock apps on MIUI 7 by clocking the CPU higher for the initial load, which sped up load times by up to 30 percent. Users will have more granular controls over what apps refresh in the background, which the company anticipates could improve battery life by up to 10 percent. Also included are some new font sizes, Auto DND to detect when you are sleeping (if paired with a Mi Band), and some other smaller changes as well.
