Samsung Galaxy S3

Galaxy S3 customers on Bell Canada can now upgrade to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, thanks to an OTA update that is currently being rolled out. The carrier announced in the month of March that it would be making the KitKat update available to its Galaxy S3 and Note 2 users in the near future.

As is always the case with such updates, it might be a while before everyone sees it. If you don't get a notification for the system update, you can manually check by going to Settings -> About device -> System updates. Alternatively, you can also connect your Galaxy S3 to your computer and check via Samsung Kies.

Bell's website still lists the 4.3 Jelly Bean update as the most recent available for the device, which means that the OTA is just starting to trickle out.

Have any of you started receiving the KitKat update? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Thanks Gregg for the tip!

Fyi the best thing to do after this update is a factory reset and wipe than restore.

Beware of kit-kat update for our S3. Major battery drain issues. Factory wipe and cache won't help either. It's a known problem.

jontalk says:

Seems that maybe the delay in ATT pushing the update is that they obviously know the problem and are working to make sure it doesn't happen with the SGH-i747.. An awful lot of these are out there including mine! :)

Anyone hear of Kit Kat for Bell Mega 6.3?

By Galaxy S3 you mean i-9305, right? The update for i-9300 remains cancelled?

Yes i-"9300 owners have been well and truly shafted by Samsung, just one of the reasons I won't purchase another Samsung in the future!

AT&T has theirs available as well. So, is it better to wait for an updated version with out the battery drain issue? Has anyone Updated their S3 successfully with no issues? I'm debating whether to try it out or just wait.

From 4.0 to 4.4 with a bevy of special Suite tossed in, and this is still the best all around mid range out there.

Got the update on Telus i747. Battery life is way better than it was on 4.3, but in the past two days, it has completely locked up, requires battery pull to get it back. Real pain with otterbox commuter on

I like that the Samsung update such an old phone that the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4. This is a company that cares about their consumers !

Jenn Cooper says:

Just got the update yesterday, but the notification said it was only for the KNOX app. I noticed some changes then discovered it was a an OS update. It doesn't seem so different from 4.3, though... yet.

dimonic says:

Got the update today. Yes, it looked like just Knox, but then another screen told me it was updating the OS - now 4.4.2. I will post again if I have any issues with it.
