It wasn't quite Android 2.0, but the recent firmware update released to the Sprint HTC Hero did have some bug fixes that are certainly worthwhile. Here's the official change log:

HTC Hero Software Enhancement SW 1.56.651.2 provides feature updates and enhancements to address the following:

  • Improvement to camera picture quality
  • DST (Daylight Savings Time) issue addressed
  • Unable to receive SMS due to full memory
  • Memory leak when Bluetooth is in connecting state
  • 3.5mm mono when not using headset with mic
  • Dialer application causing excess battery draw

Important note:  Dedicated Mute/Speaker buttons have been added to the Talk screen

So, how's your Sprint HTC Hero after the firmware update? Be sure to let us know in the comments!

The bug fixes in the Sprint Hero ROM update are great. However, ever since said update, you can no longer find copy-protected apps (aka the good ones that aren't free) in the Android Market. Something in the updated ROM must identify itself differently so the Market thinks its a different device than the original Sprint Hero that was authorized to have access to copy-protected apps. This is obviously a critical issue as it cripples the device's ability to access the thousands of copy-protected apps in the Android Market. You can still find free apps just fine, as well as paid apps that are NOT copy-protected. However, you cannot find any copy-protected apps whatsoever. You can try this yourself by trying to look up the app "FlightStats" in the Market. You will only be able to find the free, non-copy-protected "FlightStats Lite" and not the full copy-protected app. Apps that do not have a free "Lite" version, you will not be able to find at all, such as the popular paid game "Bust-a-Move." Apparently the HTC Droid Eris on Verizon is suffering from the same problem, as some developers have already taken action and put up non-copy-protected versions of their apps in the Market so that Hero and Eris users can download them. This is what developer Bendroid did with his paid app "Mystique Ch2: The Child." Another option would be for developers to simply turn off copy protection on their apps in the market, but this is obviously a less-than-favorable solution. I believe the real solution must come from either Sprint or Google, or heaven forbid both companies actually work together to resolve a problem. Either Sprint must change the way the Hero identifies itself to the Android Market using the new ROM back to the way it did before the update, or Google must add the new Sprint Hero ROM to the list of authorized devices/Android builds that have access to the DRM copy-protected apps in the Market. This issue is too much of a burden and more importantly a security risk to look to the app developers to strip all their products of copy-protection. Hopefully both Sprint and Google are aware of the problem and will work out a real solution ASAP. Otherwise, everybody loses. Consumers will be left without access to some of the best apps on Android, subscribers will be angry with their carriers, and developers will be losing out on thousands of potential app purchases by owners of these otherwise great new Android devices. Sprint/Google, the Android community needs a fix, ASAP!

I'm trying to Download the firmware update, but it keeps telling me " no firmware update available" there are other way to get it? pls let me knonw

Anonymous says:

I cant answer that for you, but can tell you I talked with CS last week, and they are currently aware of and working on some maintenance stuff to release to us as well, as well as working on getting us the 2.0 release as well. Said we would get an email with download info, etc.....Also, I'm getting like 3 days out of my battery now as opposed to 1 full day before after swapping to chomp SMS instead of the pre-installed SMS app, and to boot.......I like it better anyway

Freddy says:

I did get the update, but my battery will last only about 3 hours will you please explain about the swapping to chomp SMS instead of the pre-installed SMS app,
Thanks.

0thundr0 says:

Does anyone know if this update will also work for the HTC Hero released this month by Cellular South in Mississippi?

sjcea says:

I think that 100 % stuff is nonsense , mine has read that since day 1, and now even after this update still reads 100% but my battery lasted today 13 hours before plugging it in, and even then it still had 30 % remaining , nice improvemnt and good enough for me

Vipeezy says:

The new update is okay. It still hasn't addressed the 100% wake time issues....

archie says:

I did the update on my hero and it work even better. My app free and protected are all working and shows up in the market with no problem. The only problem I have is screen rotation pinch and zoom which works so much better on the pre, if this issue were fixed this would probably be the best phone on the market. Plus full flash support should be coming some time in the future

GioTech says:

Wrong. You have free apps, which are not copy protected, and some paid apps which DO NOT have copy protection enabled. Those apps show up just fine in the market. It's the paid apps WITH copy protection that do not show up in the market anymore after the update on the Sprint Hero. They don't show up for ANYONE. This is NOT an intermittent problem, it is widespread and everyone is experiencing it. I have confirmed with AT LEAST 20 Sprint Hero users. Either Sprint or Google REALLY dropped the ball here and screwed us over BIG TIME. Not to mention its illegal to completely take away access to apps you have legally paid to license and use.

archie says:

No that's wrong I've had protected app and nothin has happened to them everything on my hero everything is fine. If you want me. To check what you are talking about give the name off a protected app that not showing up for you so I can look it up and I will let u know what the result is

GioTech says:

If you had copy protected apps installed prior to installing the update, they will still be on your phone and work just fine. However if you need to reinstall them or want any new ones, no one is able to find them in the Market to download them. Try looking for the full paid version of FlightStats or the classic game Bust-a-Move. They are no longer in the Android Market on the updated Sprint Hero.

archie says:

I already look those up and they were in the app store and ready 4 down. I even downloaded bust-A-move and it downloaded with no problem. I guess I just got lucky with my hero, sorry to here about everyone else's who's would not work I hope it gets resolved but mines has no problem, I can even say it works better then before

dwillll says:

are you rooted?

No my phone id not rooted

i would like to love this phone but cannot seem to understand it. why do some have problems that others do not. (wake time issues of stereo sound or sms delay) i cant understand how some worked and some did not before and now same problem some say it fixed their issues and some it did not. me for instance have the awake time of 100%. i have done "the fix" (which did work for a short time) ive hard reset, soft reset, removed all apps. shut down everything on the phone that would alow and still 100% awake. how is it that someone else can have everything running and apps galore and a 15% wake time? how is it that my phone never had calender problems or DST problems but so many others did? are not all these running the same firmware. some one please tell me how if i have two phones in my hands bought at the same place on the same day both without "google" brand on the back, no appson either and one says 100% and the other 23%? please someone help me understand so i can love my HERO

Daniel says:

i can understand your frustration my hero still says its at 100 percent awake and i dont know what to do. though, the battery doesnt seem to drain as quickly so unless something else is wrong then i guess im stuck with it cause im not going back to my pre after having this phone. i have had it for a week and i like it better so im not going to give up on it plus i didn't spent money to just not use the phone lol.

GioTech says:

Um you clearly have a faulty device. Exchange it for a new one. The new update fixes the stock SMS problem that kept the phone awake 100% of the time. If you still have this problem after the update then you have a bad device and need to exchange it for a new one. For people who can't see the update, that's because you thought you were cool and rooted your Hero and installed a custom ROM over Sprint's and now you expect to be able to update the ROM that you overwrote. Serves you right, there's a reason most people don't do that and for all the warnings. People who have rooted and NOT installed a custom ROM over Sprint's can get the update just fine.

GioTech says:

Sprint employee SeanD has officially commented on the apps missing from the Android Market issue:

"All,

Thanks for the reports on this. The Sprint product teams are looking into this with HTC and Google to determine the root cause of the issue and provide a fix. We'll communicate updates back to the Community as soon as we can get them. In the meantime, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this is causing."

archie says:

I check my hero for every that was said all my app were on there o even downloaded apps that were not be on the app store(bust-a-move) and it worked with no problem which show its not effecting all hero's, my hero I can say work even better them it did before, just wanted to let you know that it did not effect all hero's but for the one that did get effcted by the update I'm sorry to here about that, but I have been a sprint customer for quite some time and they have exceptional service and I know they will do their best to get this situation resolved

GioTech says:

Just to make sure, you're using the Sprint version of the HTC Hero correct, not the European Hero with the chin? Also, have you ever rooted your phone? And when exactly did you install the firmware update from Sprint?

archie says:

I have the Sprint version, It's not rooted, and I installed the update Wednesday night

GioTech says:

Weird. Well you're the only person out of about 20 so far that claims they can still see copy-protected apps in the Android Market after updating their Hero to the new ROM. Users are posting this problem all over the Sprint and Android Market forums. As you can see in the link I posted above, Sprint has officially acknowledged that this is a major problem, and is working with HTC and Google to provide a fix ASAP. Once this critical problem gets resolved, then we can all go back to using the greatest, most customizable, attractive smartphone on the market, the HTC Hero. All the blogs and media are now calling the Droid the king, but I will never buy a phone shaped like a brick. It is not the slightest bit ergonomical, and it's not nearly as comfortable in the hand with a 90 degree corner digging into your palm. Not to mention the physical keyboard is terrible and a waste of space. The HTC Hero, Palm Pre, and HTC HD2 are the best smartphones on the market, depending on if you prefer Google Android, Palm WebOS, or Windows Mobile, respectively. And no, if you're not the slightest bit customizable, I DO NOT consider you a "smart"phone. Sorry, iPhone.

GioTech says:

So I just fixed the problem, at least for me. What I did was I flashed the phone back to the original stock Sprint ROM, downloaded the copy-protected apps I wanted from the Market, and then performed the firmware update again. This time, after the same firmware update, I could see all copy-protected apps in the Market, including the ones that I had previously purchased in "My Downloads." So the problem is completely fixed for me, and my Hero is running perfectly with no issues at all. I'm not sure if Sprint updated the new ROM to fix the problem for everyone that downloads it from here on out, or if something just went wrong the first time I performed the ROM update (this is the one I'm leaning towards). Anyway, if you are experiencing this problem, as many Sprint Hero users are, try flashing your Hero back to the stock Sprint ROM and then reapplying the firmware update to see if it fixes the problem for you as it did for me. You can find the stock Sprint Hero ROM here:

So this doesn't fix the standard messaging app staying awake 100% of the time?

GioTech says:

Yes.

Greg says:

I'm just doing the the new update we will see what it bring. So far so good my app are all their.. NO problem

Anonymous says:

Can anyone help me to get the firmware update? i've tried many times but it says no firmware available...thanks!!

GioTech says:

If you're running a rooted Hero with a custom ROM you will need to flash your phone back to the stock Sprint ROM using the link I posted in an above post. This will erase all your data and apps tho so backup what you need. Data on your SD card will not be affected. Some less intensive things you could try are pulling the battery and putting it back in to force a hard reset, going to an area with better 3G coverage and trying to look for the firmware update there, or looking in your "About Phone" settings to make sure you don't already have the update. Also the update is only for the Sprint Hero in the United States.

Just got done doing firmware upgrade...real fast download and execute I might add...Camera seems to have improved much, phone seems to be great...My Hero just seems to improve everyday...Hurry up with the newer packet HTC and get on 2.0 already! LOL

I also did the update and noticed that HTC peep, which would often slow to a crawl and crash, now works pretty flawlessly. Looks like HTC is noticing and listening for the most part.

My phone is not rooted. I don't know what "rooting" is, but it sounds sexual. However I did notice that I cannot download some apps from the Marketplace (or even find them at all). There is definitely something going on here. I am certain that Sprint and Google will resolve the issue soon.

I haven't read every comment but after doing the firm ware upgrade I don't receive any texts. It appears I can send them but I don't receive any. I called HTC tech support and they apparently know about the issue but don't have a release date for the fix. They are still working on it which totally sucks. They said it was an SMS issue. Any one had this problem and will a Master Reset fix it??

I have a Hero that was a advocate phone and the firmware is set for 1.5, what do i need to do to get this done? i am a newbie and have no clue where to go or what to do next!!!

Anonymous says:

My Hero didnt have too many issues before the update. I thought I was lucky. Texts came fine, battery wasnt great but I keep a charger in the car so I dealt with it, etc. After the update though i have experienced problems with text messages. I dont get some and people get mine late. Also it seems my battery life has gotten WORSE??? I want to like this phone because it seemed like the ideal device I was looking for in terms of weight, screen, cool factor but I'm not sure I can deal with these issues. I had to go through my desk and look for my touch pro 2 and go back to that because these issues are too much. I really dont understand why this phone has so many issues across the board. Do you think HTC will try and fix the issues or move on to the next phone like every other resource consuming company? (sorry little rant there at the end)

Anonymous says:

Ohh.. and after update... my texts seem to just disappear and erase themselves when they want to. THAT kills me. I like to save conversations sometimes and they were all gone.

I feel like I'm the only person annoyed with the fact that after the update my phone vibrates everytime I touch a button on the dial pad. Before the update I had the option to turn it off and now its no longer there. Called Sprint and HTC and no one could help.

Anonymous says:

Update worked great for a few days then the wired headset symbol come on at the top of the screen, I can hear the other person on a call if I turn on the speaker. I have never plugged a headset into the phone. The only way get rid of the symbol is to connect the charger and then the phone works as it should.

Another problem still is low on space mesage for phone storage. SMS will not work and I have deleted most of my messages but mesage will not go away.

Sprint is sending replacement phone.

I want to like this phone, great interface but I have had to hard reset 3 times in less than 2 months, and now replacement phone after update.

Never had to do this with my Winmo in 2 years.

Well I have done all of the steps to get the battery life corrected on my phone, still at 100%. SMS chomps when I installed it worked great for an hour then stopped sending messages to others (I went in and turned notifications off on the installed phones txt) I also used handcent worked great but then it started sending texts to my entire phone library from past days.... I like the phone but I am not sure if I need to do a factory reset and start over... any ideas on why some people can get this to work but others can't? The new software didnt really help anything for the battery life.... I am currently using the original txt messenger, and keeping my phone on a charge all day

OK to my knowledge there's nothing we can do about attachments, photos, text videos and videos itself. We have all lost our flash player due to the firmware update. we must be patient its a great phone with alot of bugs. hopefully htc can fix our problem with next firmware update due out 1st quarter this year. if not we are fucked with this expensive piece of hardware .

First I would like to say that I do still have the copy right apps after the update as well as the update fixed my battery issues. Second If you guys didn't know that when your phone is plugged Into the charger the awake time still runs, but after you take it off the charger and put it into sleep mode the awale timer stops running but it takes awhile for the awake time percentage to drop down if you had it plugged up more then sleep. Don't take my word for it try It out and them post.

Anonymous says:

And for you people that have lost your flash player and cannot download pics and videos you might just have gotten a bad batch of the heros just like with xbox and ps3, etc. It's not always cool to get the first batch of an electronic device.

Anonymous says:

It's not the point of a bad batch because everything was working fine BEFORE the firmware update. Its an issue of fixing one bug and it affecting another software which in our case is the player. It's funny how sprint refuses to change the phone because it's a software issue not a technical problem. HUH!!!! anyway hope to get feedback on this.

Anonymous says:

Lol I had a software issue with my first hero, I could download the firmware update but when It got time to install it would reboot and get stuck at the HTC screen. So I took it to a repair center that's inside of sprint store and let them take a look and being that I have insurance they just ordered me another one and did an even swap. And Sprint will do even swaps with any phone you have on your account as long as you have insurance. I've done It with almost all the phones I've had issues with(instinct, touch pro, palm pre, etc).Sprint and nyc need to release the new Android update instead of taken forever as always. We seem to be the last to get what we need while every other Android on the market is on 2.0 and 2.1.
