Hangouts

Option to send group messages to individual recipients also included

Hangouts is making the subtle jump to version 2.0.2, bringing fixes for the way the messaging app handles MMS. Although the issues haven't necessarily been widespread, many who have updated to the latest Hangouts and began using it for text messaging have been running into issues sending and receiving MMS. While this update doesn't specifically go into what the issue was or how it's being fixed, folks who have been having trouble with MMS in Hangouts should be doing better after the update.

MMS isn't just used for pictures though, it is also used for group messaging. Tied into this update is also a new option to turn off MMS group messaging if you'd prefer to have your messages sent to multiple recipients individually.

You can grab the latest update from the Play Store at the link above.

Hangouts update hopes to fix MMS issues

I would have trouble when sending a group MMS because most of the people I was sending the picture would get a blank message

D'oh! Every time I see news about Hangouts, I cross my fingers and hope the long-awaited google voice integration is coming. Still waiting!

I think Google has said that Voice/Hangouts integration is slated for the first quarter of 2014. Really looking forward to that, myself.

Can anyone tell me how to send an SMS to someone who isn't in your contacts with hangouts?

This makes me happy. I want to use Hangouts as the default messenger but I'm one of those few that have problems with MMS. It simply won't send them nor receive them. Yes, my phone is getting long in years. It's an EVO 3D.

same hereno diference. I have an LG Optimus F7 from Boost Mobile. I downloaded the update and still cannot send a group message (MMS)or a picture attachment. It will send a single sms or if I uncheck the group messaging option and enter multiple contacts it will send them as individual sms.

On my Nexus 5 32 GB on Sprint, I hit the character limit for the first text and can't type any more characters... Anyone know why? My friend has the same model but on T-Mobile and his works fine...

Hoping this update might fix it!

I've enjoyed using Hangouts in general and as a SMS app. Two things though...get integrated with voice, and make the conversation threads seamless from each contact. The dual SMS and hangouts threads are a hot mess.

It's too bad they didn't just borrow what webos used to have.. Their threaded conversations were amazing

Posted via Android Central App

Yes, they really have the opportunity to blow it out of the water like webOS messaging (I miss my Pre still because of the perfect messaging) but they're kinda failing with this lack of threading.

Yeah having multiple threads for the same contact is the reason I'm not using this app as my main messaging app. That and it's slower on my GNex then the stock messaging app.

Any word on this fixing the voicemail issue on Sprint. When using Hangouts as default SMS when I received a voicemail it would show up as a text message from some number and not not show up in my visual voicemail. Any new would be appreciated.

Thanks

Same here but my gf doesn't have the issue and she is on sprint as well.

She probably isn't using Hangouts for her SMS messaging. Seems like Sprint visual voicemail uses messaging to pass the voicemail to the phone and hangouts is blocking that from occurring.

Hangouts on my mobile devices is acting up. Messages (not sms) take forever to show up in the app but I get them instantly in the web interface. Happens on my nexus 4, 5 and 7, on wifi or lte. Has anyone else had issues?

Am I the only one that has had issues with MMS since first using android over 4 years ago? I was hoping this post would finally address my problem, but it appears to be unrelated (I'm willing to bet this addresses the problem when MMS messages make it through but appear blank on both ends - which I have seen as well).

I frequently get a message that gets stuck on "sending..." and then MMS refuses to work at all; incoming messages fail as well. SMS continues to work fine. Most reliable fix is deleting the message, restarting the radio (airplane mode or a phone reboot), and then resending.

This is something I've had:
- since day one (Nov 2009)
- on all phones (Droid, thunderbolt, droid X, droid charge, gnex, nexus 5)
- on all roms (stock, rooted, CM, shiny, etc)
- and on two carriers (Verizon and AT&T)

Setting MMS to not auto-retrieve seems to help the problem, but as far as I can tell it only helps it by making the issue more visible - the hangups still happen, but you're more likely to notice because you're doing things manually.

Looking around online very few people seem to run into this, so I have no idea what mechanism is at work here. The only thing that hasn't changed since this issue started is my mobile number. Anyone have any insight?

at least in my experience, i can say you're not alone. while i've always been with Verizon, i have always regularly had issues with MMS on any device (with and without custom firmware) i've owned up to and including Android (i'm talking Moto Q9, HTC Touch Pro 2, Palm Treo 700wx, Galaxy S, GNex, and now my Note 3). i think there are some fundamental issues with the reliability of MMS. that said, i had the most issues i've had in a while when i switched to Hangouts for my SMS/MMS, to the point i had to stop using the app. i'm going to give it another go now with this update since i did really like it besides the MMS issue. hopefully this fixes it.

I think the issue is mostly a CDMA issue (though your AT&T mention makes my theory a bit questionable). Since there is not a single standard MMS protocol (while there is for SMS) but it's actually an agreement between carriers, it seems the single texting app built by Google isn't 100% compatible with the way CDMA carriers in the US handle these messages.

This agreement between carriers is why Google has been having such a difficult time getting MMS into Google Voice and, I'm sure, it's why GV integration into Hangouts is also so difficult.

Not sure why Google hangout doesn't use the phone's default apn settings. Try go to custom apn settings in hangout and set your correct apn settings for your carrier and mms should work.... Did the trick for me and I'm on mvno Straight Talk.

Posted via Android Central App

This would be semi complicated. It wouldn't be an SMS through your carrier with your number unless it was sent from your phone... unless your other devices somehow sent the message to your phone and then your phone forwarded it through your service etc..

There also are ways like google voice import that would do that ( youd have to have your carrier give you another number though etc unless youre on sprint)

but most likely, you'll never see SMS that come to your phone from your carrier forwarded elsewhere (especially since as far as I know, LTE still doesn't have an SMS standard)

call me when hangouts can actually integrate my hangout conversations with my text messages. Until then, I'll keep them separate.

I just need it to stop intercepting my visual voice-mail! My vv hasn't worked since the sms integration. Doesn't bother my girlfriends vv at all but for whatever reason completely kills mine :-\

I don't think you can. If you initiate the MMS then you can send them individually, is the way I understand it.

So thats what that error message was... guess I ignored that person's message. whoops

Until they add in a few more personalization options, a quick reply pop up of some sort, and some capability to attach things like voice messages, etc...it's flippin useless anyway

Wouldn't that be more your keyboard than the app? ( SwiftKey has a smiley and enter key that are together for example)

No support for TMO WIFI CALLING. Means I still need to use stock for sending WIFI over SMS even though I love the hangouts app. Oh well.

Anybody have any news on if group messages was fixed. Because my group messages are arriving late to the people

Posted via Android Central App

I want them to fix the video call notification. Anytime I want to video call someone they never get the ringtone to know there is a video call, it rings on my end but not their phone.

Is there a way to send a SMS to multiple people without it defaulting to a group MMS?

Posted via Android Central App

Definitely thinking the MMS issues are mostly a Sprint problem as far as sending and receiving pictures. This update hasn't fixed anything for me.

Posted via Android Central App

This bug cost me $400. I don't have unlimited mms on my verizon employee line. because i'm in a few group chats it showed up as me sending 1700 pictures messages. my bill went from $30 to $400. Verizon wouldn't help with the charges.

Everytime you send though it would say it's sending via MMS both in the TextView as a hint and on the submit button.

Does anyone with a nexus 5 have issues with the hangouts not sending SMS messages and when receiving texts getting them late and out if order ? I'm having so many issues with that for the past couple of weeks and its really annoying

Posted via Android Central App

Nope, still not working for me. Talk only checks for new SMS/MMS once every time I connect to a wireless network. With no push support, this feature is all but useless.

Google Play link does go to the Hangouts app in the play store, and it calls version 2.0.2, in the description, but no option is given to actually update...it's still showing ver. 2.0.128 in the description section. Ever since version 2 was released, this seems to be a recurring problem with Hangouts updates.

They should fix SMS, at least for non-english latin languages, they should add the "Clean unicode" option as many other SMS apps have.
This changes á, é, í, ó, ú to a, e, i, o, u, and other non standard characters to SMS-alphabet. Because using a special character on a SMS cuts the 140 available letters to less than 70.

No up date still ... Going to Krispy Kreme... The "Hot Now" light is on.... I bet I can get a updated donut there.

Can someone tell me why the dickens you cant just use the hangouts app to voice chat only?!!! I don't want to video chat at all, but Voice chat would be handy.

MMS send still not working on WIFI.
I would like to see a workaround like in Sliding Messaging app that turns the Mobile Data(3G,4G)on to send the MMS and then return to WIFI after.

Would be great to use Hangouts for SMS and MMS, but it intercepts my voicemails on Sprint and generates erroneous text messages for each one. This also has the unfortunate effect of disabling my visual voicemail. Same things happened when I tried to use Facebook Messenger as my default text app. Handcent fixed this problem a million years ago by explicitly allowing you to remove voicemail intercepts from the texting app. Google and Facebook need to get on the ball so we can actually use them!

Still can't get MMS messages. Mainly pictures but most others too. Can get them from iPhones a lot too. Any suggestions?

Actually, just realized that is works fine if you're not on wifi. When connected to wifi I have issues. Anyone know why? Or if there's a fix?

I am still having trouble receiving MMS. HTC One just upgraded to KitKat/Sense 5.5. I would be at home using WiFi and the mms would not download. They finally downloaded this morning - 12 hours later - in my stock Messages app. I even turned WiFi off and tried over 3G.

I had this problem. I have Samsung Galaxy S4 US Cellular. On first screen in Hangouts where it has all of the messages from contacts. Hit menu, then settings, then SMS, go to bottom, hit access point names, you should see your carrier info here but you most likely don't. Hit menu and Reset To Default. . For me it put the info needed to work correctly. I now have a carrier there. When i went back to my messages it downloaded all of the ones that wasn't there before. I hope this helps everyone.
