The BlackBerry Priv is finally here with the Waterloo company making its long awaited debut on Android. And one thing a lot of Android users care about is if and when they'll be getting the latest software updates on their phones.

Thankfully, BlackBerry is on the case with this right out of the gate. In our recent interview with Ron Louks, BlackBerry's President of Devices and in a briefing in London with Gareth Hurn, Global Director of Device Portfolio Planning, the news is positive.

What we understand right now is that BlackBerry is targeting an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow "sometime in the new year." Sure, that's not too specific and leaves plenty of wiggle room, but the conversation was pretty direct and pretty convincing. The Priv isn't here to sit and rot, it's here to deliver what people want from an Android phone.

We also heard first hand what has since been published by BlackBerry regarding security updates. Specifically the monthly Google patches. In Europe, at least, BlackBerry is aiming to have these updates pushed out to the Priv within a month of Google releasing them.

We'll have to wait and see just how it pans out, and there will always be skeptics. BlackBerry is new at Android, but its not new at making phones. And it's been a bright start for sure.
