If you weren't quite up to installing the leaked Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero, fair not -- it's now all official and everything on Sprint's Web site, sort of. It's listed as being released today on Sprint's support page, though the download link is notably absent still. Note that the upgrade will wipe your phone, so make sure all your important data is synced up somewhere.
Now, does anybody know if and when the Hero will be upgraded to Froyo? (Yeah, we went there.) Thanks to everybody who sent this in!
Update: HTC has the link to the download here.

Just another tease. I hope they get the download up soon. Didn't want to install the leak wanted to wait for the official release off Sprint.
I'M POSTING THIS HERE ON THE 1ST COMMENT SO ANYONE FRUSTRATED WITH THE HTC DOWNLOAD DOESN'T HAVE TO READ THE ENTIRE THREAD!!!
the download was taking hours and would freeze at around 19mb/118mb. if people got that far.
around 2pmEST RocketJeff posted the sprint website download was much faster and it was (under 5 minutes.)
"The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.
The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip
Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now..."
Also, before that AC members cryptographrix & byronnnn were kind enough to host mirrored sites. If htc & sprints downloads aren't working for you grab the download from either one, respectively,
http://d39v91y2g7hprn.cloudfront.net/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.exe
or
http://www.4shared.com/file/rjUXbPem/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.html.
Thanks a million to both of you!!!!!
Thanks! Also, if the flood gates open and the Sprint download slows down here's a mirror from their post.

Great update
I got to laugh - I knew this was going to happen as soon as I installed the leaked version.
If the leaked version is anything like the "official" release, which I am lead to believe they are identical - Hero owners will be happy.
I am.
Although I am convinced the Hero is dead in the water - no more updates for this puppy ...
Same here....I downloaded the "leaked" version last night because I didnt feel like waiting anymore....then today its released....just my luck...FML
And what about the GSM Hero?
Everyone:
If you download and install the official version it should overwrite the leaked version on your phone. I was told this from a friend that works at Sprint.
I installed the 'leak' two days ago and am pretty happy with it. I'll probably install the official version anyway. I wonder if there will be any little differences.
Does that mean that best buy could update my hero
Just when I was thinking of installing a custom ROM.
So much for the email from HTC yesterday saying they didn't have any
info regarding an update for the Sprint Hero.
Seriously?! Haha, I just installed the "leak" last night! Couldn't wait any longer either. I'm going to install the official update just to be on the safe side.
I installed the leak over the weekend. The version # on this release is the same as what is on the phone.
I'm probably going to buy an Evo sometime soon so I might as well make this one official.
You mean I can install the official and lose root? Hell yeah, sign me out of that list, I like root.
Just got off the phone, 45 minutes, 4 different people, last one was named Nicole, 2 transfered me without telling me. Anyway, they say there is no such page stating that the update was released. I gave them the address and was told it is not a valid address. Walked them through searching through support.sprint.com and google. Was told can't find. Denying everything. Amazing. Sprint may be cheaper per month, but they care not for their customers. I even told her to go to androidcentral.com. I was told, they do not go to form sites that spread rumors. Amazing.
ugh not again
What "not again"? The info on the Sprint support page was never there before for Eclair, the same thing happened with the Moment and the update came out.
why r they gonna put up an article with no download link...thats like fishing for tires. link already!
They need to adopt OTA updates like webOS.
Yup, You guys are more than welcome to install the "Official" update from Sprint. I prefer my unofficial update(Which has the same firmware & software build as the official) "with root" which allows me to remove Sprint bloatware.
could you please explain how this is done. it is exactly what i want!! thank you.
helpmew.androidpls at gmail dot com
Hey, I don't much about working on these phones, my friend rooted my phone. Now i want the update but i need the wifi tether with root. If have a tutorial or something please post or E-mail me at reedwebdesigns at gmail dot com
thanks for anything
if our apps are stored on appbrain.com, will they be wiped also or can we just sync w appbrain after we install 2.1, whenever that may be?
Is there a good way to back up apps, settings, etc. before updating? Just finished resetting everything on a replacement phone, and I'd hate to have to do it all yet again.....
MyBackup Pro
by rerware.com
costs $5
this too, but it's not as comprehensive (backs up sms, contacts & call logs) but it's good to have on the phone w/ the supplement & it's free =) :
WaveSecure Mobile Security
by tenCube
and a supplement to Wave Secure is
WaveSecure UninstallProtection ***WS must be installed first
by tenCube
and of course contacts & calendar should be backed up to your google account.
Link looks live on HTC's site:
ftp://hero:hero@66.185.19.164/HTC%20Sprint%20Hero%20MR%202.27.651.5.exe
Yep, its there! downloading now
i find it unlikely that that is where htc would put the file. it's not an obviously HTC owned server and there's absolutely no directory structure that should be expected. i'll wait until sprint actually links to a file before i run that exe
i stand corrected - as wrong as that link looks to me -- HTC is, in fact, actually linking to that site from theirs.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/
i must apologize to blather
a couple questions: first, are we positive that with this RUU, users who have root presently will lose root? which leads me to my second question, will developers/coders/hackers/etc be able to figure out how to re-root for those who have installed this update (or the leaked version)? lastly, i'm sure ROMs will be cooked based on this 2.1 kernel and those ROMs should be better than those cooked off the 1.5 or 1.6 kernels, right? how long does it usually take to create a ROM and where should users look for those ROMs?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=641
EVERYTHING you need to know about cooked ROMS for the Hero.
P.S. They already have ROMs based off the new kernel.
i've read and am still reading a LOT through xda and am just wondering if there is a way to tell which ROMs are based off which kernel... also, can you suggest any clean and quick ROMs based off the 2.1 kernel? i am currently using beezy's and really like it and would love to branch out a bit. lastly, would ROM Manager help me out with this at all or shoudl i just search and flash on my own?
I installed the leak last Friday. The build/software number is 2.27.651.5 on both the leaked version on my phone AND the Sprint website. The only thing I'm not sure of are the "release keys".
I've been having trouble downloading certain apps from the Android Market since installing the leaked version. I was told it could be because it wasn't an "official" release the Market didn't recognize it (or something to that effect). Anyone know if that's true? It still won't work today.
I went to HTC website and everything is the same as the leak. When someone, that did the leak and this download, gets this installed can you break down any differences between the leak and this one? Im pretty sure its the same, but curious. Thanks!
(I am at work for another 6 hours so I can not :-()
was downloading, then HTC pulled the plug...now all you get is a bad page when you try to go to the link....damn Htc I was so excited :(
Um, I think we crashed their server. download just stopped and cannot re download
I was thinking the same thing...terribly slow download to begin with then it froze at 19.2 mb :\
made it all the way to 109 mb :/
me too. i'm stuck at 19.2 mb. awfully slow :(
give me more time to check out this loss of bluetooth function in 2.1. wtf??
redownloaded...moving quicker now!!!
this is taking forever to download...oh well, waited this long.
i have some questions, if anyone could be kind enough to help me out, while they're waiting.
if we install the official 2.1 or leaked 2.1, are we going to lose the ability to use the bluetooth function? that seems to be what xda forum is saying.
also, if i'm understanding all of this correctly, the leaked 2.1 can be rooted. is that so? does that mean i can take off the sprint apps i don't want to make more space?
if yes,
can someone provide me with the link to the leaked 2.1 update?
and then provide instructions or a link w instructions on how to root?
i'm sorry to be a pain. i'm new at this and truly appreciate the help!!!
btw....on another note...rumor has it that even though the htc evo is shipping with 2.1 it will get an ota update to 2.2 upon activation. now that makes the $10 fee a little easier to swallow. and it makes sense (NPI) that google would want to announce that at I/O & sprint couldn't announce it before google announce 2. not much. it's still $120/year but at least it's for the greatest phone out and the best software available. still unsure if i should wait for christmas time to see what new phones pop out.
http://www.ozcarguide.com/technology/cellphone-pda/3141-htc-evo-4g-andro...
No, you can not root the 2.1 leaked update. Damageless made an update.zip file based off the leaded RUU with release keys that retains the root from rooting 1.5.
I'd suggest using his SprintUpdate2.zip on xda forums if you want to maintain root, use 2.1, and remove the stock Sprint apps.
@ziaodix
thank you so so much for your reply. i'm really sorry to be a pain. i've been reading all of the forums (since before i bought my hero in november '09) but it's as if people are speaking another language.
if you, or someone else wouldn't mind taking the time, perhaps you could explain some of this to me---and others in my shoes. i promise, i do 'pay it forward' and reply to the questions that i do know answers to.
does rooting void your phone's warranty?
are you able to unroot and go back to 1.5 or 2.1?
does the official upgrade 2.1 or leaked upgrade 2.1 screw up the bluetooth function? that's sort of a deal breaker.
is this what you are referring to?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681697)
and it looks as if my second download of the official 2.1 has completed. i'm going to leave it in my downloads folder until some wonderfully smart person is kind enough to help me out.
thank you for your patience!!!!
helpmew.androidpls@gmail.com
Yes, rooting your phone does go against the Warranty, in whioh case if it becomes inoperable they wont fix it, though if you are like me with a $400 phone you should have insurance and if you do mess it up, throw it against a concrete or brick wall and get a new one.
On the second part of that question, yes you are able to return to 1.5 stock, un-rooted once you root. XDA also provides instructions and files in how this is achieved as well. (Also this is key in being able to send it in for Warranty work) ^^
RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility. From what I understand it's basically an executable file that allows your PC to update your phone via USB cable so that they don't have to send the massive files over the air (OTA) and eat up a massive amount of bandwidth.
And yes, that link is what I was referring to, but no you need to have root with a recovery image installed.
I followed these instructions and had absolutely zero errors.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
Every time I try downloading the link it comes up as operation not able to be downloaded at this time. Anyone else have this issue?
same with me..half way through..BAM stopped
And its back
its back and going at a blazing 80kb/s now!
check that its at 40!
UPDATE: There is A link to the htc site for the download on sprints site now!
The link that takes you to the download is now on the Sprint support page. Maybe this will work now.
Sprint just released this from twitter its official http://bit.ly/93pnqS.
Is the Sense relay worth having to wait for updates forever? I have a MOTO Droid and thinking about a HTC phone, but having to wait forever would make me nuts. 2.1 has been out for a wile, so my guess is Froyo will be out for HTC phones by X-mas. Do not get me wrong HTC has top notch phones. As an ex BB Storm 1 user I got hocked on all the leaks as the original OS was so bad.
Moto droid owners had like 4 months and 8 delays until they finally got 2.1 so either way you will still be waiting.
I think the HTC Evo 4G 2.2 rumor might be true as its been floating around AndroidForum for a couple of days now. And Supersonical does have contacts with Intel so I would trust him on this one.
UNOFFICIAL RUMOR:
rumor has it that even though the htc evo is shipping with 2.1 it will get an ota update to 2.2 upon activation. now that makes the $10 fee a little easier to swallow. and it makes sense (NPI) that google would want to announce that at I/O & sprint couldn't announce it before google announce 2. not much. it's still $120/year but at least it's for the greatest phone out and the best software available. still unsure if i should wait for christmas time to see what new phones pop out.

Still keeps freezing at around 14-15mb.
The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.
The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip
Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now...
Ridiculous, makes me hate Sprint because it downloads a little then stops, I mean it is going down on kbs
This cannot be downloaded from sprint? Does it have to be HTC?
even if you go to HTC website then through support, the download is so slow and it keeps dropping
finally 2.1 i hate to say it but it pays to be patient and not root!
were you able to download it??
I have it downloaded and sitting in MY Downloads folder, but I wont be installing it. My rooted with the leaked "official w/ release keys" is 100% identical to the screen shot sprint has up on there downloads page for the new 2.1 Eclair release.
its taking foooooorevvvver! (Squeaks Voice from Sandlot)
only 3 more hours to go... Im getting a Sandwich....
@willquil1 i was able to download it...then it froze!
try again. i had downloaded it twice by accident. the first one was slow as a dirt and froze at 19.2mb. i'm running the second one and it seems to be going much quicker.
3rd download try, 30kB/sec. are their servers on dial-up?
30 kbps is NOT dial-up my friend. Trust me when I say this, I used to be on dial-up when I first got internet, and you were lucky if you managed to get 5 kbps download speed. :(
LOL it failed on me twice already at 30% and 21% and getting about 30KB/s. Let's see if this third time does the trick.
ive got 2 hours on my end... so ill go play a video game or do my taxes
Months late, still great though.
anyone got a torrent going or an mirror for this download?
I was just about to ask - can SOMEONE that actually got the download already put it up somewhere, preferably on a CDN or something?
(I have Amazon CDN service - if you can get me the file, I'll put it up)
P.s. - sprint stores also not able to get the download at the moment because HTC pulled a 'durrr' moment and put it on the site without accounting for how many people would be trying to download it at once.
Can we say "Load balancer"????
i have it downloaded & haven't installed it yet.
how would i get it to you or put it up?
please be patient with me. i'll try & help if someone will guide me. ;)
Wow, you ppl are great lol... the server is being hit by damn near everyone waiting for it! So if you keep freezing and its slow... well thats becuz everyone is trying to download it! Same crap happened to the web-os update. So relax you will get it. OR go to a sprint store!
I downloaded the leak a couple of nights ago. And I have enjoyed considerable emprovments both visual and performence. And from what I can tell it looks the leak and the "offical" are the same. Has anyone done them both? If its the same then I would rather not go through all that again.
I'll let you know if it ever downloads
thanks lol
Ok here's the deal - if someone can get me the file, I'll put it up on a CDN service somewhere everyone can grab it.
Either that or whenever I'm done downloading I'll put it up on a CDN service but then will probably be way after everyone else has it.
It's too bad HTC couldn't spring for it in the first place though - esp since even coral could CDN this if needed. (or as suggested before, create a friggin torrent)
i have it downloaded & haven't installed it yet.
how would i get it to you or put it up?
please be patient with me. i'll try & help if someone will guide me. ;)
FINALLY started downloading... awfully slow though, its estimating a couple hours D: ugh... guess I'll have to be patient with the rest of you!
try downloading again. the first time my download took forever & stopped at 19.2mb...the second time it was done by the third time i checked...just a thought???
EDIT: The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.
The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip
Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now...
have a question , what's the diffrence between the last leaked version and this version?
F Sprint and HTC for not preparing for the flood of download requests. Ever hear of Mirror downloads??? Multiple locations??? Different servers??? Here's a concept...maybe have HTC AND Sprint host the file?
I'm not one to complain, but really. C'mon.
Did someone replace my Internet connection with dial-up? Seriously, no mirror sites for this?
Yup lost the download right in the middle. WTF ... sigh. try and try again.
and no, lastdetailwd, you're so right.
will host for file
Crazy question. What web browser is every one using to download update? I used Google chrome, got the update but when I run it get error message. Something about IE8.
Any suggestions?
Trying to download now, says it will take 8 hours using IE8.
Google chrome took all of 10 minutes to download.
The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.
The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip
Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now...
Uhm, when i try to down load it, it asks me for a username and password....
username: hero
password: hero
I'm using Filezilla, and it is going pretty good. Still slow. Torrent or mirror anyone????
firefox... was saying 2-3 hours... but now the download link isnt working again
a little pop up says "530 Not Logged In"
Quick question - has /anyone/ gotten the entire 118MB download and installed using it yet?
hmmmm...now you have me wondering..
this is what i have in my download file and the little icon changed to a setup icon.
HTC Sprint Hero MR 2.27.651.5.exe
ftp://hero:hero@66.185.19.164/HTC%20Sprint%20Hero%20MR%202.27.651.5.exe
is the download/set up file 12.4 MB (13,058,048 bytes) and not 118mb?
is the set up file less than the entire file?
i thought i got to 19.2mb before it froze earlier??
why did the icon change?
i'm so confused!!!
i guess even if you sent me instructions on how to send it to you, it wouldn't matter.
sorry :(
time to download, again!!!
it got fudged up mine did that a few times too, sry bud
thanks ;-) at this point i could use some serious fudge!!! =)
15 minutes into download #3 and i don't even have 1mg yet.
i wish i knew how to root & which rom to put on. i like the idea of getting rid of the extra sprint apps i never use for more space.
if anyone wants to help me please!!!!!!
helpmew.androidpls at gmail dot com
i'm begging. it's pathetic, i know. i'm just lost and wish someone could send me easy directions to root the phone or with a link on how to and answer a few questions.
i swear, i would take the time to help someone if i knew the answer to their question. anyway, it's not like we don't have lots of time waiting for this download. ughhhh!!
The site is down right now they locked the link
Ok for some reason wont download the entire file in Google chrome.
Good news IE8 is still going!!
this is rather hilarious lol. I guess I can be patient isnt like I will die. Just wanted to see if someone had it on another server lol
this is rather hilarious lol. I guess I can be patient isnt like I will die. Just wanted to see if someone had it on another server lol
I just got kicked off again. 5th times a charm!
Ok - I'm sitting in front of a console for my CDN - if /anyone/ can get me the file (personal contact form enabled), I'll host it ASAP better than HTC is.
somebody buy this person a beer!
lol
It's surprising no one has posted any mirrors yet. Since everybody is trying to download it at the same time it's going to take forever. I think we should let about 10 people download it and then they each setup mirrors for everyone else to download it. Then everybody is happy.
yep. Too bad HTC hadn't thought of it.
I'm sitting at 53% with 2-3hrs to go, but if anyone can get me the file (my handle at gmail.com) I'll put it up on CDN.
Ok here is the error message I get
>SetupNew\setup.cpp(140)
PAPP:
PVENDOR:
PGUID:
$
@WindowsXP Servcice Paeck 3 (2600)
I.E Version 8.0.6001.18702
What in the world does all that mean?
Got that error message earlier when I tried to run it and didn't have the entire file. Check filesize and make sure it's 118MB.
OOOO! Got it again, were cookin now!
Someone please get the entire file to cryptographrix so he can host........................
This is driving me nuts.
^agreed. i havent made it past 6% all morning >.<
another quick question for you all...
I installed the leaked version last Friday before I knew much about rooting. How long does it usually take before someone cracks this and allows us to root 2.1 if we want? Kind of a newb here!
At this rate, I might post my existing filepart so everyone can start at 54.5%...
Get it! http://www.4shared.com/file/rjUXbPem/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.html
getting - once I do, posting.
You are the man! thanks!!!
hope this is legit. :/
It is legit. No worries.
thanks man you saved my day!
dude thanks! went from 4 hour download to 5 min download! installing over the previously leaked version and will let you know when its installed! again thanks!!!!!
Me too! I'm uploading it now and will provide a link shortly
gracias, dude. byronnnn is the man!
this is what i get
error 170 usb connection error
http://d39v91y2g7hprn.cloudfront.net/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.exe
go get it
I registered just so I could tell you that you're my hero!
i love you...dl in under 4 minutes....still waiting after 4 hours on htc's site and not even up to 1mb. you're awesome
http://rapidshare.com/files/389225622/htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.exe.... is listed on HTC Hero Fan page on Facebook
Holy shit! clicked download, and as long as it took me to type this it's already 30%. THANK YOU!!! ... its the whole thing right?
byronnnn, cryptographrix, u guys rock!
byronnnn's version installing atm! :) ...
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B7ebz5bnZQ8xMmY1YmZlYjgtYzA1MS00M2VjLWI...
Installed and I get "Welcome to NOW" and then it stops...waiting - anyone get past it or did it brick my hero?
Edit: ah, wait - just slow going so far, it seems like....
Same thing happened to me when I Installed the leaked Rom. Remove battery and replace. Then power up.
Im courious to find out if there is a difference between this version and the leaked version. If there is then I will go through the whole process again.
getting ERROR 170
If i remember correctly from the leaked version, that error is a problem with the usb. Try downloading the latest sync software to get latest drivers. also, windows 7 was having problems.
Also don't mount the USB before running the program.
I was...I had to run the update on a 32bit win7 machine instead of my 64bit
Thank you Thank you Thank you!
Anyone have HTC Sync on a mirror? I run Linux so never had a need to download this until today. That server is dying too...
Thanks
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/HTC-Sync-Download-144151.html
If the download button is huge and green, its and ad. The real one is a bit below and to the right :)
so now we just wait for the 2.2 announcement today, and then another 8 months to get it right?
I'm wondering why all these so called "mirrors" have a different file name than the one that is downloaded from the HTC site.
The file on the HTC site reads 202.27.651.5, but all the mirrors here read 2.27.651.5 which was the leak that posted a week ago.
So are these "mirrors" just pointing us to the leaked file?
thats not the file name, thats the address. people got the actual one downloaded and posted them elsewhere. the actual file name is the same.
Looking at software info, looks exactly the same as the leak.
Just installed this version over the "leaked" one. All is well! It may lag at the NOW screen for up to 2 mins, FYI.
yeah, mine did
Any differences? How much memory is available with all apps killed? I have the leaked version and every time i kill apps i only have like 35mb of memory
mine says 54mb after killing =)
