Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1

If you weren't quite up to installing the leaked Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero, fair not -- it's now all official and everything on Sprint's Web site, sort of. It's listed as being released today on Sprint's support page, though the download link is notably absent still. Note that the upgrade will wipe your phone, so make sure all your important data is synced up somewhere.

Now, does anybody know if and when the Hero will be upgraded to Froyo? (Yeah, we went there.) Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

Update: HTC has the link to the download here.

Just another tease. I hope they get the download up soon. Didn't want to install the leak wanted to wait for the official release off Sprint.

I'M POSTING THIS HERE ON THE 1ST COMMENT SO ANYONE FRUSTRATED WITH THE HTC DOWNLOAD DOESN'T HAVE TO READ THE ENTIRE THREAD!!!

the download was taking hours and would freeze at around 19mb/118mb. if people got that far.

around 2pmEST RocketJeff posted the sprint website download was much faster and it was (under 5 minutes.)

"The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.

The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip

Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now..."

Also, before that AC members cryptographrix & byronnnn were kind enough to host mirrored sites. If htc & sprints downloads aren't working for you grab the download from either one, respectively,

http://d39v91y2g7hprn.cloudfront.net/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.exe

or

http://www.4shared.com/file/rjUXbPem/HTC_Sprint_Hero_MR_2276515.html.

Thanks a million to both of you!!!!!

I got to laugh - I knew this was going to happen as soon as I installed the leaked version.

If the leaked version is anything like the "official" release, which I am lead to believe they are identical - Hero owners will be happy.

I am.

Although I am convinced the Hero is dead in the water - no more updates for this puppy ...

Everyone:

If you download and install the official version it should overwrite the leaked version on your phone. I was told this from a friend that works at Sprint.

I installed the 'leak' two days ago and am pretty happy with it. I'll probably install the official version anyway. I wonder if there will be any little differences.

So much for the email from HTC yesterday saying they didn't have any
info regarding an update for the Sprint Hero.

I installed the leak over the weekend. The version # on this release is the same as what is on the phone.

I'm probably going to buy an Evo sometime soon so I might as well make this one official.

Just got off the phone, 45 minutes, 4 different people, last one was named Nicole, 2 transfered me without telling me. Anyway, they say there is no such page stating that the update was released. I gave them the address and was told it is not a valid address. Walked them through searching through support.sprint.com and google. Was told can't find. Denying everything. Amazing. Sprint may be cheaper per month, but they care not for their customers. I even told her to go to androidcentral.com. I was told, they do not go to form sites that spread rumors. Amazing.

this too, but it's not as comprehensive (backs up sms, contacts & call logs) but it's good to have on the phone w/ the supplement & it's free =) :

WaveSecure Mobile Security

and a supplement to Wave Secure is

WaveSecure UninstallProtection ***WS must be installed first

and of course contacts & calendar should be backed up to your google account.

i find it unlikely that that is where htc would put the file. it's not an obviously HTC owned server and there's absolutely no directory structure that should be expected. i'll wait until sprint actually links to a file before i run that exe

a couple questions: first, are we positive that with this RUU, users who have root presently will lose root? which leads me to my second question, will developers/coders/hackers/etc be able to figure out how to re-root for those who have installed this update (or the leaked version)? lastly, i'm sure ROMs will be cooked based on this 2.1 kernel and those ROMs should be better than those cooked off the 1.5 or 1.6 kernels, right? how long does it usually take to create a ROM and where should users look for those ROMs?

EVERYTHING you need to know about cooked ROMS for the Hero.

P.S. They already have ROMs based off the new kernel.

i've read and am still reading a LOT through xda and am just wondering if there is a way to tell which ROMs are based off which kernel... also, can you suggest any clean and quick ROMs based off the 2.1 kernel? i am currently using beezy's and really like it and would love to branch out a bit. lastly, would ROM Manager help me out with this at all or shoudl i just search and flash on my own?

I installed the leak last Friday. The build/software number is 2.27.651.5 on both the leaked version on my phone AND the Sprint website. The only thing I'm not sure of are the "release keys".

I've been having trouble downloading certain apps from the Android Market since installing the leaked version. I was told it could be because it wasn't an "official" release the Market didn't recognize it (or something to that effect). Anyone know if that's true? It still won't work today.

May 19, 2010 - 10:251 year ago

this is taking forever to download...oh well, waited this long.

i have some questions, if anyone could be kind enough to help me out, while they're waiting.

if we install the official 2.1 or leaked 2.1, are we going to lose the ability to use the bluetooth function? that seems to be what xda forum is saying.

also, if i'm understanding all of this correctly, the leaked 2.1 can be rooted. is that so? does that mean i can take off the sprint apps i don't want to make more space?

if yes,

can someone provide me with the link to the leaked 2.1 update?

and then provide instructions or a link w instructions on how to root?

i'm sorry to be a pain. i'm new at this and truly appreciate the help!!!

btw....on another note...rumor has it that even though the htc evo is shipping with 2.1 it will get an ota update to 2.2 upon activation. now that makes the $10 fee a little easier to swallow. and it makes sense (NPI) that google would want to announce that at I/O & sprint couldn't announce it before google announce 2. not much. it's still $120/year but at least it's for the greatest phone out and the best software available. still unsure if i should wait for christmas time to see what new phones pop out.

No, you can not root the 2.1 leaked update. Damageless made an update.zip file based off the leaded RUU with release keys that retains the root from rooting 1.5.

I'd suggest using his SprintUpdate2.zip on xda forums if you want to maintain root, use 2.1, and remove the stock Sprint apps.

@ziaodix

thank you so so much for your reply. i'm really sorry to be a pain. i've been reading all of the forums (since before i bought my hero in november '09) but it's as if people are speaking another language.

if you, or someone else wouldn't mind taking the time, perhaps you could explain some of this to me---and others in my shoes. i promise, i do 'pay it forward' and reply to the questions that i do know answers to.

  • i guess the first thing you should 'know about me' is i never rooted my 1.5 phone. i was too afraid and there was always a promise of 2.1 within a few weeks.
    • second, and i'm sure these are dumb questions.
does rooting void your phone's warranty?
are you able to unroot and go back to 1.5 or 2.1?
      • third, if anyone knows the answer to this please advise,
does the official upgrade 2.1 or leaked upgrade 2.1 screw up the bluetooth function? that's sort of a deal breaker.
        • i see "RUU" a lot. what is that?
          • if i never rooted 1.5. can i still use the SprintUpdate2.zip which you referred to? (i assume i get this on the xda forum?
is this what you are referring to?
            http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681697)
            • if anyone would like to 'speak w me directly they can email me at helpmew.androidpls at gmail dot com
            • and it looks as if my second download of the official 2.1 has completed. i'm going to leave it in my downloads folder until some wonderfully smart person is kind enough to help me out.

              thank you for your patience!!!!

Yes, rooting your phone does go against the Warranty, in whioh case if it becomes inoperable they wont fix it, though if you are like me with a $400 phone you should have insurance and if you do mess it up, throw it against a concrete or brick wall and get a new one.

On the second part of that question, yes you are able to return to 1.5 stock, un-rooted once you root. XDA also provides instructions and files in how this is achieved as well. (Also this is key in being able to send it in for Warranty work) ^^

RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility. From what I understand it's basically an executable file that allows your PC to update your phone via USB cable so that they don't have to send the massive files over the air (OTA) and eat up a massive amount of bandwidth.

And yes, that link is what I was referring to, but no you need to have root with a recovery image installed.

I followed these instructions and had absolutely zero errors.

Is the Sense relay worth having to wait for updates forever? I have a MOTO Droid and thinking about a HTC phone, but having to wait forever would make me nuts. 2.1 has been out for a wile, so my guess is Froyo will be out for HTC phones by X-mas. Do not get me wrong HTC has top notch phones. As an ex BB Storm 1 user I got hocked on all the leaks as the original OS was so bad.

Moto droid owners had like 4 months and 8 delays until they finally got 2.1 so either way you will still be waiting.

(I have Amazon CDN service - if you can get me the file, I'll put it up)

P.s. - sprint stores also not able to get the download at the moment because HTC pulled a 'durrr' moment and put it on the site without accounting for how many people would be trying to download it at once.

Ok here's the deal - if someone can get me the file, I'll put it up on a CDN service somewhere everyone can grab it.

Either that or whenever I'm done downloading I'll put it up on a CDN service but then will probably be way after everyone else has it.

It's too bad HTC couldn't spring for it in the first place though - esp since even coral could CDN this if needed. (or as suggested before, create a friggin torrent)

The download from HTC is still very slow so I checked the sprint software download page and it looks like sprint is hosting a copy of it themselves now.

The sprint link is htc_sprint_hero_mr_2.27.651.5.zip

Sprint's downlown is much faster, for now...

Quick question - has /anyone/ gotten the entire 118MB download and installed using it yet?

May 19, 2010 - 12:031 year ago

hmmmm...now you have me wondering..

this is what i have in my download file and the little icon changed to a setup icon.

HTC Sprint Hero MR 2.27.651.5.exe
ftp://hero:hero@66.185.19.164/HTC%20Sprint%20Hero%20MR%202.27.651.5.exe

is the download/set up file 12.4 MB (13,058,048 bytes) and not 118mb?

is the set up file less than the entire file?
i thought i got to 19.2mb before it froze earlier??
why did the icon change?
i'm so confused!!!

i guess even if you sent me instructions on how to send it to you, it wouldn't matter.

sorry :(

time to download, again!!!

thanks ;-) at this point i could use some serious fudge!!! =)

15 minutes into download #3 and i don't even have 1mg yet.

i wish i knew how to root & which rom to put on. i like the idea of getting rid of the extra sprint apps i never use for more space.

if anyone wants to help me please!!!!!!

helpmew.androidpls at gmail dot com

i'm begging. it's pathetic, i know. i'm just lost and wish someone could send me easy directions to root the phone or with a link on how to and answer a few questions.

i swear, i would take the time to help someone if i knew the answer to their question. anyway, it's not like we don't have lots of time waiting for this download. ughhhh!!

Ok - I'm sitting in front of a console for my CDN - if /anyone/ can get me the file (personal contact form enabled), I'll host it ASAP better than HTC is.

It's surprising no one has posted any mirrors yet. Since everybody is trying to download it at the same time it's going to take forever. I think we should let about 10 people download it and then they each setup mirrors for everyone else to download it. Then everybody is happy.

yep. Too bad HTC hadn't thought of it.

I'm sitting at 53% with 2-3hrs to go, but if anyone can get me the file (my handle at gmail.com) I'll put it up on CDN.

another quick question for you all...

I installed the leaked version last Friday before I knew much about rooting. How long does it usually take before someone cracks this and allows us to root 2.1 if we want? Kind of a newb here!

getting ERROR 170

Posted by turn00
May 19, 2010 - 12:431 year ago

If i remember correctly from the leaked version, that error is a problem with the usb. Try downloading the latest sync software to get latest drivers. also, windows 7 was having problems.

If the download button is huge and green, its and ad. The real one is a bit below and to the right :)

so now we just wait for the 2.2 announcement today, and then another 8 months to get it right?

May 19, 2010 - 12:511 year ago

I'm wondering why all these so called "mirrors" have a different file name than the one that is downloaded from the HTC site.

The file on the HTC site reads 202.27.651.5, but all the mirrors here read 2.27.651.5 which was the leak that posted a week ago.

So are these "mirrors" just pointing us to the leaked file?

Posted by turn00
May 19, 2010 - 12:521 year ago

thats not the file name, thats the address. people got the actual one downloaded and posted them elsewhere. the actual file name is the same.

Looking at software info, looks exactly the same as the leak.
