Amazon is finally allowing anyone to buy their Amazon Echo speaker without having to wait for an invite.

Amazon Echo

Amazon first introduced its Amazon Echo connected speaker several months ago, but so far it has only been sold on an invite-only basis. Today, that changed as Amazon is allowing anyone to purchase the speaker without needing an invite for $179.99.

Shipments of the invite-free Amazon Echo will begin on July 14:

"The customer response to Amazon Echo has been incredibly positive, and we've been working hard to build more as quickly as possible. We are grateful to our early customers for their incredible engagement and for providing us with invaluable feedback to help shape Echo as it evolves—with their help, we've been able to add features like Audible, Pandora, home automation, sports scores, calendar, and more," said Greg Hart, Vice President, Amazon Echo. "We're excited to get Echo into the hands of even more customers and continue to invent new features and experiences."

The company is also testing a SDK for the Echo with a private group of software developers so they can add new features to the speaker. It will begin rolling out to all developers later this year.
