Meta is reportedly preparing to enter a slightly different category of the smart glasses market with a new pair that doesn't have any cameras.
Smart glasses have faced plenty of scrutiny over the past few months, and privacy has always been one of the biggest concerns surrounding models with built-in cameras. Meta has taken several steps recently to prevent users from tampering with the capture LED and secretly recording people, but the privacy concerns and perception around camera-equipped smart glasses still remain.
Now, it looks like Meta is preparing an alternative for people who want smart glasses without the camera. According to a report from The Information, Meta is developing a new pair of camera-free smart glasses and could begin shipping them as soon as next month.
The new model will reportedly be called Luna and could be unveiled at the Connect developer conference next week. The glasses are expected to be available in two designs, called Clubmaster and Burbank.
While Luna won't have a camera, it will still pack plenty of hardware for accessing Meta AI. The glasses will reportedly feature six microphones and six speakers aimed at the user's ears. This will allow users to talk directly with Meta's AI chatbot without pulling out their phone.
The glasses are also expected to retain a dedicated button on the side for quick access to Meta AI.
Removing the camera will reportedly allow Meta to slim down Luna considerably. The new model is expected to look and feel much closer to a conventional pair of glasses, which could make them more appealing to people who don't necessarily want the bulk or privacy concerns that come with camera-equipped smart glasses.
Luna isn't the only new pair of glasses Meta is reportedly working on, though. The company is also developing its own augmented reality glasses, reportedly called Phoenix.
Meta is reportedly preparing a major demo of Phoenix that could show us a different way of video calling. The glasses will reportedly be capable of displaying virtual workspaces and large virtual movie screens. Phoenix is still further away, though, with the AR glasses currently expected to arrive sometime in 2027.
