The glove are off. After attacking AT&T, Verizon just released a commercial attacking/mocking the iPhone as an 'iDon't' device that doesn't have a real keyboard, can't multitask, can't take 5-megapixel pictures, can't take pictures in the dark, can't customize, can't run widgets, and can't interchange batteries. And guess what? Everything that the 'iDon't' can't do, the Droid does.

No shots of the Droid (previously known as the Sholes) were actually shown in the commercial but there is no doubt that Verizon is betting big on their first Android device. We're absolutely certain that interest in the Droid will soon reach a fever pitch and come November, it's going to be one of the most anticipated devices of the year. Expect more commercials and ads about what the Droid does and what the 'iDon't' cant.

What do you guys think? Smart move by Verizon? If anything, 'iDon't' is catchy as heck.

[droid does]

thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Okay, so I have a BlackBerry Storm, and was certain I was getting a Storm 2 a month or 2 back. Then I heard VZW might get a few android devices, so I thought I might give one a shot. Seeing this has almost solidified it for me to jump from my BB to the Droid. No the commercial is what made me decide, I have been reading up on android and following the Hero and Droid for a couple of weeks now. Seeing this commercial put a huge smile on my face, and made me think yea leaving my BlackBerry that can't do all of these things either sounds like a good idea.

The only thing keeping me from this Verizon phone is Sprint's Everything Data plan. I'd love to get this phone.

But the ad is pretty stupid. Sure, sign me up to become a cylon or corporate robot.

The ad makes me want to stay away from Droids, not put one in my pocket.

Yeah I have to agree with the last person. I don't find the ad particularly compelling. If I didn't already know what product they where selling I can't say that I'd really catch on right away. Aside from the fact that I don't like the Droid in the first place, they just aren't clearly marketing the product. And I understand its meant to be a bit of a teaser commercial to get people talking, but how many people are going to catch on to what's actually being sold? I just think that after the "There's a map for that" 3G coverage commercial that Verizon did that they could do a better job than this. All that being said though DOWN WITH THE IPHONE!! I'm glad to see them attacking that cult.

The reason Verizon doesn't show video of people experiencing the "I don't have AT&T 3G coverage, and that guy over there is enjoying Verizon 3G" is that the majority of people live in urban areas. If you look @ the AT&T map (and listen to their commercials), it is clear that AT&T was just trying to reach the majority of the people (I don't remember what percentage of people the commercials state). So, if you live in the "sticks" (I used to, and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that choice), then AT&T is blowing you off - that's their business model. I also have to admit that I like AT&T's response to the Verizon "Map adds": Verizon's version of 3G to me is completely pointless. The ONLY reason why I would be interested in 3G coverage is so that I can surf the web and talk at the same time (on 1 phone ;-) So, if your 3G does't do THAT, then (WRT me), you have NO 3G coverage anywhere...

"iDon't" was catchier when it was "Nintendon't". Verizon must have hired some guys who worked at Sega in the early 90s.

You want to sell droids? How about a nice Star Wars commercial?

Get the actors, some in costume, some not, walking down a street making calls on their Androids.

How about Chewbacca, running out of battery on his iPhone howling?

C3PO texting R2D2.

How about Emperor Palpatine at the Cantina trying to use Jedi Mind Tricks to get some Storm Troopers to buy him an drink and use an iPhone -- and they aren't buying either.

How about Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, and James Earl Jones calling and texting and MMSing each other about their upcoming family reunion.

Haliburton and no-bid contracts? Very clever, but you obviously have no idea how the world of government contracting and acquisition works (other than what you heard on CNN). Not a good analogy at all.

it's a teaser though, you're just supposed to be curious as to what it is that can do all these things that something else can't.

it's sort of like the teaser storm commercials where the guy picks up the phone and right as he's turning it over, it ends. then later they showed the rest of the commercial after it was officially announced.

i'm pretty sure there are going to be more lengthy commercials within the next week or so as they start releasing more info leading to the launch in a couple weeks.

they seem to be marketing these as a robot sidekick (much like the droids in star wars, they were assistants to the main characters) so it's not supposed to be you turning into a robot, it's getting this pocket friendly robot that can help you with all the things you do.

at least that's what i got out of the tv ad + the website.

I have a tiny JAX phone that I got from Virgin on their $50 unlimited (peak and off) plan.

It has a web browser and internet access that is quite good for reading news, searching, and so on. Simple stuff.

Quite frankly...all I need in a handheld MID is a web browser and voice.

I'd like to get a netbook too, when Clear installs real Wimax around Puget Sound...and I want it to have Moblin with an ARM chip and be instant on.

Personally i have a blackberry storm and i do not see the droid being able to match it or even close to competing with it. Soley because of brand loyalty and brand recognition, people see blackberry and they associated with quality that has been around for years. Also many business people already use the blackberry and that wont change due to some new gimmick of phone.

Not true - all it takes is for a manager (or, better still, a director) to get excited about the phone. That person buys it, and then, all of a sudden, everyone in the whole department is getting one. Keep in mind, everyone, these cell phones are TOOLS, not religions...just get the one that does the best job for you. I still have my 1st gen iPhone, and it needs to be replaced soon. I will probably get an Android phone or Windows Mobile when I replace it. I'm just looking for the best tool for ME. The wonderful thing is: the best tool for ME will NOT be the best tool for everyone...

Just wait, Apple and/or AT&T will find some minor technicality that allows them to sue Verizon over these commercials.

You know, Verizon should do a variant of Microsoft's laptop hunter ads. It would be 3G signal hunters - people driving around with Verizon and AT&T phones, trying to see how often they could actually get a 3G signal on each one. After all, having the nation's fastest 3G (which is highly debatable anyway) doesn't mean squat if it's not available anywhere except a few heavily-populated areas here and there. Verizon rocks in rural areas, period.

This is a very brilliant comment. Why would apple and/or att sue Verizon for a commercial that Motorola made. You probably agree with the other people on this post that said it was bad advertising by Verizon because there name was not on it. Ill probably need to restate for you that this is not a Verizon commercial. It is a Motorola commercial!

Seems like a reasonable prediction - I think that AT&T is making a mistake by blowing off 4G. So far, their reaction has been: "our 3G is SO fast, we don't need 4G." I think they will find that their 3G will seem INCREDIBLY slow once everyone else gets their 4G up and running. Of course, whether or not this prediction comes true doesn't really matter: I loved what the iPhone did to the cell phone industry -> it made them all stop SITTING on the technology that they clearly had ready. They were just sitting on it (my theory is based on the fact that most manufacturers had something to 'compete' with the iPhone out to market VERY quickly). Of course, for my uses, it took a bit longer for some actual competition...

P.S. I would LOVE a Constitutional amendment to prevent this "I can only get this phone on a certain network." Wouldn't it be great if the cell phone manufacturers strictly competed with other cell phone manufacturers, and cell phone networks simply competed with other cell phone networks? Apple might regret hooking themselves to AT&T's wagon...

This is a MOTOROLA add not Verizon ad. hence Verizon's name not being on it. That also means that this add is not Verizon talking shit about the iphone. On the other hand the i have a map for that commercial is Verizon directly talking shit about att service.

Come on. You really could not tell they were advertising something that was meant to compete with the iphone? The text regarding picture megapixels and whether or not it could take pictures in the dark did not tip you off that it was a phone? The music and the little "i" right before all of the text was not blatently obvious to you? If you cant figure out what they were advertising without them having to hold your hand and spell it out for you, then you should just stick to whatever free phone T-Mobile will give to you anyway.

I'm Android all the way, but that "teaser" doesn't really speak to new users. It's clearly meant to attract technologically sophisticated, smartphone users. Open Source development. A Keyboard. Low Light camera etc etc.. The average phone buyer doesn't care. They just want to be cool, have a big screen & see pretty colors. iPhone is cool. Android is smart.

They have 2 choices.

I think they should go "nerd/geek" all the way. Show specs and what it means to the end user. Stop trying to win the cool game. Win the nerds. wow us with power.

Or they could try and beat apple at their own game. Going with the generic Android OS isn't a good start. HTC sense UI with the Specs of the Droid would be awesome.

That Acer is looking good too... I want them all!

I like the advertisement, i think they did a good job. for the people that don't like it and say it doesn't make sense because they didn't show the phone, people won't know what the advertisement is talking about. That's what makes it a good advertisement ! it's going to make people wonder and want to check out what it is by going to the site. It causes more hype for when the actual site if released, since the site is still counting down on when they well get to see it.

Seems to me the commercial is saying that Verizon has nothing that can compete with the iPhone right now. The only thing that can compete is a product that does not officially exist. I would not be too happy with this ad if I were a Verizon partner.

to the guy that thinks the storm is better;
I used to own a storm. I had one of the magical ones that never had any problems and worked perfect. I thought it was the best phone ever.. and at the time it was (and i work in the industry). I switched to an android phone (mytouch) because i started working at tmobile. I can tell you without a doubt, other than the superb email that you get on the BB, the android is better in pretty much every way, and it gets better every day literally as everything updates on the fly. Give one a shot, you will be impressed.
I started laughing at the commercial when i saw it. Why? Because its all true, and i know quite a few ibots that would be yelling at their tv's screaming blasphemy. The iphone is overhyped and outdated. Yea its got more apps right now, its also got over 2 years of sales more than the android which has been on the smallest carrier, not (at the time) the biggest carrier. Still 10k-15k apps after 1 year is nothing to sneeze at. Now that its going to be on all carriers expect that # of apps to blow up and past the iphone in less time.
Android- the way to go.

I just think RIMM is making the same mistake w/ Blackberry that Palm made: "I know, let's not make ANY improvements to our OS for 10 years, and see how THAT works out..." (lol...maybe I'm just too old - I remember when everything was Palm, and very few people even knew what a Blackberry WAS ;-)

This is going to be an interesting outcome, I mean the iPhone is the best, smartest, and coolest phone out there and many have tried to knock it down (BB Storm,Palm Pre, and best of all the Instinct lol), and all have failed, but an interesting fact that someone put out that caught my attention was Apple/AT&T vs Google/Verizon. Apple being one of the most dominating forces of the electronic world, Google being one of the best, maybe the best search engine out and even coming out with their own OS, their a force to be reckoned with. Then you have AT&T who is basically one of the top cellular service providers because of the iPhone success, and Verizon without a doubt the best cellular service provider out in terms of coverage. You have a pretty intense battle for the HCC (Heavyweight Cellphone Championship title).

Umm, the cool thing about the iphone is that there is ONLY ONE PHYSICAL BUTTON. That allows the phone to stay sleek, thin, and simple. I'd be much happier with a refreshed iphone with a better camera and some up to date features. I dont want to mess with buttons. Especially when I would need to make my phone slide apart to get to them.

I had verizon wireless and the coverage was good the service was okay but the monthly bill was totally outrages. i Understand that it isn't necessary to have all the fancy stuff but what is the point of owning a phone like the droid and not getting all the cool stuff. So that where verizon gets you the second that you start adding things to your plan the promised good sale goes to crap and your stuck paying over 100$ dollars a month for two whole years for a single phone unless you are a verizon wireless employee and get a discount so not many of us. Once my i did my time with verizon which i know i make it sound like prison and yeah honesty it felt like i was trapped and terminating my contract would cost a fortune.
I switched over to AT&T and i couldnt be happier i have an Iphone and though i do pay 170 a month im paying for 2 lines and we both have iphones 3Gs. oh yeah and one thing verizon still doesnt have is a phone that can run full HTML for their internet they also cap your internet usage and they dont have an app store with over 85000 apps of which a lot of them are free. so yeah it may be nice to have a phone with a good camera and a flash but whats the point when i can go to walmart and pay less for an actual camera. My point is The Iphone is still the bst phone out on the market and it wont change and by the way the verizon commercial for the 3g coverage is total bullshit AT&T has great 3G coverage so verizon can suck it.

You guys are pretend-a-geeks. You dont know technology if it hit you in the face. Im sorry but take any linux box on decent WinOS laptop and it will outperform any gazillion $$$$ mac.

Its no different with the iPhone... The iPod... the iMac... what ever else. you guys are dont know crap and are nothing but opinionated brats that hang off Apples balls.

Hi Casey,
I dont live in the USA so have not been really up on the iDont campaign, but for me, one of the things reviewers often miss WRT a disadvantage of the iPhone, is what for me is THE REASON I will never buy one.

MUSIC!
With the iPhone, you have to use quicktime, itunes, a proprietory cable. You cannot drag and drop folders of music to and from your phone.

I detest all of that (and I own two mac computers of my own). I like being able to plug in to a generic USB, on ANY computer anywhere, and just add or remove or copy music to and from the device as much as I want, no interference from a freak controlling Apple.

This would make iPhone (or an iPod for that matter) completely unacceptable to me.

Mark UK.

yes the iphone has a shift key and no the Android OS is still not quite as solid as Apple's OS it will be tho one day. The droid is no better than the iphone its really personal preference the droid is ugly the slide out keyboard is flat and kinda hard to use and has no landscape touchscreen keyboard. I do love my DROID tho it rocks except for the camera the camera is C R A P

i just bought the droid. and let me tell u. its the iphone.. on crack. it absolutely amazing. i can talk to my husband and surf the web at the same time. or i could be downloading a ringtone (for free if i may add)and be playing a game. the internet is fast and the phone is even faster. you can customize a password to access it so your pocket doesnt touch dial. one of my friend who has an iphone told me told me he rather have my phone anyday. it has a touch keyboard or a regular one so it helps depending on where you at. also it will find anything in your phone by your voice. the camera is better than my actual camera also. it has many amazing free app's and they arnt demos either.. they are the full app and ready to go. the second you click on download app go in your phone and bam its already there! so get the droid not the 'idont'. i promise you wont regret it!
