Blue version delayed in 'some regions' for next 2-3 weeks

Galaxy S III pebble blue

Following yesterday's widespread reports that the "pebble blue" version of the Samsung Galaxy S III would miss the May 29/30 launch window, Samsung has released a statement offering an official explanation. Without going into specifics, the manufacturer seemed to pin the delay on quality concerns, possibly confirming recent rumors that it recently had to destroy several thousand defective pebble blue back covers.

Here's the statement in full --

“Samsung’s GALAXY S III Pebble Blue version comes with a newly invented blue colour and special hyperglaze material.

“In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality GALAXY S III to customers, a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions in the next 2-3 weeks.

“Samsung is working hard to ensure that customers will get the Pebble Blue coloured devices as soon as possible.”

We're not sure exactly how you go about "inventing" a color, but it seems that the combination of the blue shade and glossy finish presented some problems in the final few weeks of production. Hopefully the manufacturer's claims will prove accurate, and those who have their hearts set on a pebble blue will be able to get one soon enough. In the meantime, if you're after a Galaxy S III over the next few weeks, it looks like you'll be getting a marble white.

Actually its Betty White. She locked it down years ago. How else you think she's been able to keep chuggin' along all these years?

If I was going to replace my GNex with an SGS3 it would definitely be the Pebble Blue variant, but I think I'll wait for the Nexus 4 - if rumors are true about all the OEM's I'm sure there will be a non-black (or white) option made available.

Not at all directly related, but worthy of note - the Samsung Replenish for Sprint had a similar story. When it was announced, black, blue, and raspberry models were shown. But the raspberry versions weren't available until 3-4 months after the launch due to similarly worded reasons involving color sourcing and finish.

I was thinking of going for the pebble blue, but after seeing it in this picture I'm not so sure. Kind of looks cheap purplish in this pic. I was thinking it was going to be more of a steel blue. Hmmm.

I would much rather the white on the back had that metallic finish to it as well instead of plain boring white shiny plastic. In that area, the One X has won IMO, and is why I got it instead. Its a shame, the blue version looks far better as well.

What have they been DOING ALL THIS TIME???/ They delay the announcement by months... and they still don't have something as basic as the color and materials ready to roll for full deploy?

Believe it or not, color changes in plastic parts can be quite involved, depending on the base resin and color desired.

It does not suprise me at all that they might be having trouble with the blue colored one.

If this has to with their process of putting gloss on the pebble blue colour then I know what I would do...

DROP THE GLOSS. I don't think anyone would miss it. :)

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that is just the result of crap quality jeans. My One X is fine inside mine. Nice try though :)

I can see it now:

"Samsung’s GALAXY S III comes with the
newly invented Software Update.

The blue one looks better I think. I preordered it but had to switch to the white one due to the fu***ng delays.

If I choose to make an unnecessary purchase and get the Galaxy S III to replace my Galaxy Nexus it will certainly be the blue version. So, I guess I will have to wait to do something I don't really intend to do anyways.

If they had just made a black one like MOST PEOPLE WANTED, they wouldnt have had this shambles. I pre-ordered 3 weeks ago and wont be getting mine now until at least 6th Jun, if im lucky.

Even more glad I went with the One S now as I hate white as a phone color, and lord knows how long the wait will actually end up being...

My supplier has said they dont know when they will have stock of the Blue unit, but white seems unaffected. As compensation they are giving me a months free line rental.

Not really surprised about the delay, as I thought the pebble blue might be in short supply, just a little surprised by the give reason. I had the feeling Samsung thought the white would be as popular, if not more so, as most review units and presentations have featured the white one. On a quick pole of people I know who are getting one or thinking of doing so, around 4 out of 5 want the pebble blue. Hopefully it won't be too long until it is all sorted and supply is flowing and balanced. With pre order numbers like this I would be amazed if everything went super smooth out of the gate.
