Google Maps updates to v5.2.1, focuses again on Latitude

Google has once again pushed a new update for Google maps. The last version we received from the Android Market was that of v5.2 and now v5.3 is available for all. While most of the update looks to be just bug fixes, Google lists the new additions for us as being:

  • Location history dashboard for latitude
  • Check in at home after setting a home location in latitude.
  • Add your own aspects about places when rating them.

You can load up the Android Market now and grab the latest update or jump on past the break for the download link. [Google Mobile blog] Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I, for one, love Latitude. It's great for keeping track of where my kids are. And with their driving ages rapidly approaching I anticipate it being increasingly useful to me.

Same here. The wife and I both drive 40 miles one way to work. Sometimes at night. It's nice to be able to see that she's still on the way home. It's also good for seeing how late the other one will be when you overlay traffic! I also use it for following my somewhat older parents when they go up to their country home about 4 hours from here. It's nice to see that they make it safely.

Problems? Definitely! Latitude is buggy as can be! It has moved us instantly from Texas to out in the middle of the Atlantic, the middle of the Pacific, China, New Jersey, New York, Vietnam, etc. I've got screen caps of most of these bugs. The real time updating rarely works so we usually just use regular updates. Hopefully this version fixed some of those bugs!

interesting, real time updating seems to have worked the couple of times I used it. tracked my friend on his verizon galaxy s and my other friend on his dx to see who was going a faster way home. ive seen when it put me in africa once ages ago when i was in north america but that was long ago.

what model phones do you have? wonder if that might have something to do with the real time not working.

I too love latitude. My wife and I use it frequently. I've been recording my location history over the last 6 months and it is way cool to see the history graphs. Time away from home, at work, etc. How many more miles I need to travel to reach the moon. I hope they make it more granular like other Google graphing tools to include time driving, shopping, etc. Not that I need that data, would be interesting none the less.

this update is pretty fun, you can add your own aspects to places you rate. lots of times i was at a sushi place and it didnt have the :) or :( for a sushi entry just that it was a restaurant.

i havent been able to find the location history dashboard yet

edit: oh wait i found it

lol seems like a lot of people dont like latitude, i love it :D I use it a lot to see where Ive been when i travel for work, its an interesting stats tool as well as integrating with th rate places stuff its fantastic. dont know how many times ive been out on the road and used those reviews to judge if i should try a food place or a store in an unfamiliar area. perhaps the people that dont like latitude never leave their house :D

I LOVE latitude. My boyfriend, friends and family use it to see where we are in the state. Its a very nice feature. (especially with the boyfriend ;) )

I love the stats that compare your travel to the moon, hopefully i'll be able to get there soon!!!

oh and i'm definitely starting to love google places, i'm using the reviews of restaurants, hotels, pet stores, everything. its very informative!
even when there are sponsored links for discounts and coupons. great!

I'm sure latitude has it's uses for certain people, but i'm not a fan of any app that I don't use, that insists on trying to run in the background, and put a load on my battery. I wish it was separated from Maps, so it if don't use it, you can delete it, or at least freeze it.
