Last year, Dell announced that it was working on a tablet in collaboration with Intel that aims to pack high-end hardware in a chassis that is only 6.4mm thick. The tablet, dubbed the Dell Venue 8 7840, is now available on Best Buy for $399.
The tablet is loaded with high-end hardware in the form of an 8.4-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600. Powering the device is a quad-core CPU in the Atom Z3500 series clocked at 2.3 GHz and a PowerVR G6430 GPU. There's 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 8 MP camera at the back and a 2 MP shooter at the front along with Wi-Fi ac connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0. On the software side of things, the Dell Venue 8 7840 features Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
Then there are a few tricks Intel threw in, like the silicon vendor's RealSense technology, which brings 3D object tracking and depth sensing via two 720p cameras mounted at the back of the tablet beneath the 8 MP camera sensor. These three cameras work in conjunction, allowing you to triangulate the distance between objects in a photo, refocus images after the fact and much more.
