Apollo 11 focuses on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission in which American astronauts first walked on the moon. Rather than re-creating scenes or conducting new interviews, the filmmaker cooperated with NASA and the National Archives and Records Administration to unearth loads of unreleased footage from the launch and recovery of Apollo 11. In total, over 11,000 hours of audio recordings and hundreds of hours of video was cataloged in the making of this film by production, and the documentary only uses that footage and audio rather than anything supplemental from recent years. The team made high-quality digital scans of what was available so that the film looks gorgeous despite being made from footage that's 50 years old; it even premiered in IMAX theaters!
