Instagram starts rolling out higher-quality images for its Android app

Instagram will now display photos at a higher resolution inside its mobile apps. Previously displayed at a resolution of 640x640, Instagram will soon show users their photos at 1080x1080. The rollout is currently in progress and seems to be limited, for the moment, to the Android and iPhone apps, with no mention being made of the web interface or the beta app on Windows Phone.
From Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger:
We're rolling out 1080x1080 uploads (and higher-quality viewing) for IG on iOS and Android. Let me know if feed looks a bit sharper today :)We're rolling out 1080x1080 uploads (and higher-quality viewing) for IG on iOS and Android. This change means that images will generally be displayed at a resolution much closer to that of the original image. As Instagram is currently rolling out higher resolution display and storage, it might take some time for higher-quality images to show up in your feed.

About damn time! Instagram was already inferior in appearance when comparing iOS to Android photos so hopefully this will tighten that gap.

I wish Instagram would update their Windows Phone app... Just maybe when Windows 10 is released it might be the savior of the Windows platform... Posted via the Android Central App

A little odd that you are mentioning that here but I am with you as I am a long time Windows Phone fan. Posted via the Android Central App

Isn't it still in Beta? Posted via the Android Central App

Finally!

About time huh? As usual devs put Android as second class behind IOS apps. Posted via the Android Central App

You can't blame developers. Android users usually have phones with subpar performance with the minority being the high end users. Posted via the Android Central App
-
Yeah, because it takes so much computing power to display a 1080x1080 photo.
-
@ Zig261 - And what do you use may I ask? If it's IOS you are simply a troll.
-
What are you taking about? They're updating both iOS and Android versions.

More often than not, ESPECIALLY with IG. IOS gets new features first.. They beta test it for us , no doubt Posted via the Android Central App

Developers are more likely to push new features to IOS simply because of the limited number of different devices IOS covers. With Android, the fragmentation is huge as there are numerous types of devices of varying specs (and varying versions of Android too), so testing generally will take longer for Android apps.
This is the trade off for choosing Android, one which I have learnt to live with! -
Well...it could be worse. You could be using a Windows Phone and in that case Instagram would still be in Beta...and without an update for well over a year now lol So don't complain, mate. Some people have it worse than you ;)

No one uses Windows Phone, so thankfully no one has to suffer =) Posted via the Android Central App

They are the third largest mobile OS...with a pathetic 3% of marketshare, sure (and decreasing since Nokia left, obviously) but they still have several million people =P

we (or I) really need less compresed images in facebook.

Will this only be for newly uploaded images, or will older images now appear in the new format?
-
Probably just new uploads no? It would take a lot of work to convert images that have already been posted I think. Posted via the Android Central App

Curious about this myself. Posted via Android Central App

Newly updates. I just noticed this a few days ago with the web interface and it is only happening for the new ones.

I noticed 2/3 days ago that it is actually active on the web interface. I don't remember nor could I find who was it but I just checked with another friend and her latest picture is 1080x1080. I use "Imagus" pluging in Chrome so whenever I go over a picture it pops up the image and noticed the new big size.

Finally images on Instagram will no longer look like rubbish (as they shouldn't be in the first place considering this is a photo sharing app)... Posted via the Android Central App
