Google has fixed the infamous cheeseburger emoji with Android 8.1

About a month ago, some Twitter users started to notice something rather peculiar about Android's cheeseburger emoji – the cheese was placed on the bottom of the bun below the patty.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was quick to respond to this travesty and announced that his team would "drop everything" to address the issue at hand. We all thought Sundar was simply having some fun with those that were (rightly so) freaking out about the misplacement of the cheese, but it looks like our outrage has resulted in real-world change.

Spotted by the folks at Emojipedia, the current Developer Preview of Android 8.1 Oreo has a tweaked cheeseburger emoji that places the cheese on top of the patty.

In addition to this, the less controversial beer emojis have also been updated so that we no longer have the mind-boggling half-full mug with mysterious froth still sitting at the top, as well as reworked holes on the cheese emoji so that they don't look like they were painted on around the top edge.

Android 8.1 Oreo was shaping up to be a pretty minor update in the grand scheme of things, but I think we can all agree that it's now one of the most important software updates Android has ever received.

  • The things that people find important...
  • They need to fix gboard's gif support!
  • Or the fact that custom phrases break after a reboot and you have to force close the app.
  • More stickers will fix that problem!
  • I feel much better...
  • I know, right?
I can finally sleep at night, safe from the threat of bun-cheese!
  • Didn't bother me in the least. "Have it your way", as they say.
  • Pixel cheese editor coming 2018 to Pixel 3.
  • You mean they've broken the cheeseburger emoji. They've ensured I'll never update any device beyond 8.0... Hell, I may as well be using iOS now! Screw you Google.
  • I feel the same way. 😂
  • Android Emoji still ugly compared to IOS if you ask me.
  • Absolutely awful emoji's.
  • Let me fix that for you: "Emojis are absolutely awful" *ducks*
  • Can't wait to utilize that 8 to ten months from now on my note 8!
  • It was never an issue on the Samsung Note 8. The cheeseburger has always had the cheese where it belongs. Yes, 'cheesegate' was one of a litany of issues with the so called 'pure android experience. '.... Yes, that hour or so you devote to fine tuning your new phone operating system settings. I dunno about anyone else, but other than turning on/off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and perhaps mute my phone, I haven't looked at an android OS settings menu since phone set up. Cant say I'm holding my breath awaiting the plethora of minor visual or background changes to the next android update. Granted, there are some behind the scenes performance improvements, but at this point, a good part of annual android updates are android engineers justifying their employment.
  • No one seems to notice older Pixels and Nexus devices with the new Android updates. My old Pixel seems like unchanged. However, Some of the improvements/changes that I have noticed on my Nexus 6P are as below: --> Navigation buttons(Back, home and Multitasking) are now a little smaller and thinner. Replaces slightly close to each other.
--> Notification/Action Panel is now translucent just like Windows 10. Google's been following Microsoft in terms of Design language Iol.
  • That is a very good thing. Android needs actionable notifications.
  • More important, Google has identified the reason why people are experiencing random reboots on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: A total lack of QA.
  • Felonious Monk from Phandroid?
  • Keep making **** up for a phone you're too broke to afford
  • SwiftKey is good to go.
🍔👍 no cheese at all 🤡🤡🤡
  • Well that's a relief. One has to have priorities. Now if I could just get Google to finance me one of those squeaky Pixel 2s all my squirrels would be up one tree.
  • Much better than apples cheeseburger emoji now with their ridiculous notion that the lettuce goes under the meat patty...
  • Haha pls don't start another burger emoji movement
  • How about fixing something important like the apps with malware that keep getting in the play store over and over. Actually start vetting the apps before they get in the play store. Probably to busy trying to figure out how they got caught tracking people even when location services are turned off.
  • 🍔🍔🍔🍔
  • Who moved my cheese? 🤔
  • I can explain 😭
  • #non-issue
  • Finally I can go back to using Android!!
And I'm glad this issue has been fixed. Prone are so concerned about terrorists or whatever huge sorry is on the news and can't vote to focus on the real issue that is the burger emoji
  • So they made this a priority but we are still restricted to 1,000 songs on a playlist on Google music
  • It's called a Playlist, not a library.
  • You're correct. I have 35,000 songs in my library but I have many playlists with only 3,000 songs.
  • Kids in 2050: What was a big issue in your time grandpa. Me: The order of toppings on a cheeseburger emoji.
  • I never cared where the cheese was... I just want to know where the bacon is!
  • Now if they can just fix the Pixel 2's.
  • And don't forget about the turkey emoji!!
  • Glad to see that they've got their priorities Straight. This is way more important than those pesky bug fixes /sarcasm
