T-Mobile Xperia Z

Sony flagship currently being tested, according to reports

It looks like the Xperia ZL might not be the only high-end Sony phone headed to the U.S. this spring, as fresh images and reports from TmoNews suggest its international counterpart, the Xperia Z, may be coming to T-Mobile USA. The site reports "via three separate sources" that the Xperia Z, codenamed 'Yuga,' is currently in testing on T-Mobile, and offers the image above as evidence.

That's no guarantee that it'll ever see the light of day -- carriers often test devices before deciding not to release them. But at least now there seems to be a non-zero chance of T-Mo finally getting a high-end Sony phone to call its own.

The Xperia Z packs a 5-inch, 1080p display, and is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, with 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel Sony Exmor RS rear camera. It's also water and dust-resistant, unlike the Xperia ZL. In our review of the device last month, we praised its performance and build quality, but raised some concerns over its less than ergonomic design and slightly buggy camera software.

T-Mo fans, hit the comments and let us know if you'd be interested in a magenta Xperia Z.

Sony Xperia Z may be headed to T-Mobile USA

If T-Mobile is going to be doing this thing where you buy your phone on a plan without a contract --- they need to remove their stupid branding from the devices. That extra T-Mobile branding on the face of the Xperia looks gaudy. If I'm going to be buying a device unsubsidized, I don't want their damn advertising or software on it.

If you're going to buy unsubsidized, consider the Xperia ZL -- you can buy it straight from Sony if you like and it won't have T-mo's name on it. It supports both T-mo and AT&T, is totally unbranded & IMHO, an excellent phone (I'm using one on AT&T). The glass back and larger physical size of the Z still makes me scratch my head why folks prefer it to the ZL. To each his own, I guess! The ZL has basically the same internal guts but without that glass on the back (the textured back of the black ZL is superb for grip -- I'm a female with very small hands and I can operate the ZL one-handed).

I've posted some info about my experience with the ZL so far in the forums if anyone's interested. I'm sure the Z would be an equally excellent experience, but the larger physical size with no increase in screen size seems pointless to me. ;)

And aside from size and the glass back, that's the biggest difference between the two, or perhaps the most significant usage-related difference. I'm not used to having waterproof or dust proof electronic devices, so with the ZL, I don't feel I'm missing out on much of anything. Now if you live in a desert, I'd say dust-proof is a no-brainer ;).

Well, I also like to take my phone to the pool and/or beach. I feel like with the Z I wouldn't have to worry about it like I do my current phone (and previous ones as well).

Sony ZL = plastic, LTE support, not dust or water resistant
Sony Z = glass, no LTE support, very resistant

My only question would be is Tmo going to enable LTE through a software upgrade on this device?

This phone would be good for my sister she is always dropping her phone in the toilet. Don't ask me how or why because i don't know.

I have the Hong Kong version of Experia Z - I traded in the Nexus 4 for it. I love it. Absolutely love it.
I also have the iPhone 5 (also Hong Kong version). The Z is soooo much better than the iPhone
and the screen is great!!!!

This should be on all US carriers.

I have been asked by no-less than 10 people when I got it, and what it is etc....
