Avoca

Race to the bottom continues

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced that it's dropping the price of the budget "Avoca" 7-inch tablet to just £49 — half the usual price of £99. The new price makes the device one of the cheapest Google Play-certified tablets around, and significantly undercuts low-cost rivals from Argos and Tesco.

Though at such a low price you'll get exactly what you pay for. The Avoca 7-inch tablet is powered by a 1GHz CPU, with a WVGA (800x480) display and 512MB of RAM — so don't expect an exceptionally speedy experience in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. You do at least get a reasonable 8GB of storage and microSD expandability, as well as a promised 8 hours of battery life.

However considering it's essentially a disposable tablet, you can't really argue with what you get for the price. CPW says the Avoca tablet will remain at £49 while stocks last.

The use of the word basic is apt, but at £49 your not going to get a hardware rich, feature rich tablet, perfect for kids i would say and quite a bargain, that said for an extra £60 you'll get the huddle from tesco's and perhaps that may be the better option. However a bargain and many like them lol

Please, do not buy this. I work there and any sub-£150 tablets really aren't worth having.

Someone that has kids and knows how they can be a bit clumsy, its not the best tablet obviously but is it meant to be high spec nope, is it meant to be full of the latest features nope-its built to be basic and aimed at those that just want or need the bare essentials, i reckon at £49 its an ok tablet.

Again mike are you thinking of the tech minded? then yes i for myself would avoid, i wouldnt even opt for the huddle, I would go for the likes of the nexus 7 or the 10.1 2014 edition samsung, would you give buy the latter for say a 7 year old? I wouldnt so then step up this and then perhaps the huddle.

I bought the same spec as this for my four <12 year-old boys 18 months ago for 71 squids (PCWorld Versus Touchpad 7). I got the Instant Replacement insurance policy for an additional 21. So, a ton all up, and I've used the replacement policy SEVEN TIMES, mostly due to drops after being removed from the leather case [grrr!] or damage to the power port when running away with it without unplugging first [grrr!]. Kids are *hard* on tablets. This spec is perfectly OK for pre-teens and at under 50 is a bargain. I'm tempted to get two more for xmas so they have one each!
