ZTE's apparently making a phone with two notches because of course they are

The notch has been a controversial subject in the smartphone industry ever since the Essential Phone was announced almost a year ago, and the past few months have seen more and more OEMs adopt this design trend. WinFuture recently shared exclusive renders of a concept device ZTE's working on, and it features not one, but two notches in its display.

The phone in question is currently referred to as the ZTE Iceberg, and similar to what we've seen on other handsets, the notch at the top of its screen is home to a front-facing camera, ambient light sensor, and an earpiece for phone calls. At the bottom is where you'll find the Iceberg's second notch, and this houses another front-facing speaker that can be used in conjunction with the earpiece for stereo audio.

Having two cut-outs in the display certainly isn't my preferred design choice, but it does allow the rest of the Iceberg's front to be virtually all screen. It's a unique look, but it's not the only unconventional part of the phone.

On all four corners of the Iceberg are raised edges of glass the stick out further than what we see on most smartphones. It gives the Iceberg an even more iconic look, but I don't even want to think about what'll happen to the phone with a small drop on concrete or a wood floor.

Rounding out the phone are dual cameras on the back, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and some sort of smart connector that could allow for ZTE's own take on Motorola's Moto Mods.

ZTE's apparently touting the Iceberg as a phone for "after 2018", but even then, there's no guarantee it'll ever hit store shelves.

What's your take on the Iceberg?

Display notches are fine, but companies are doing a horrible job justifying them

  • Axon 9 still coming?
  • Not too bad actually
  • I'm with you.
  • Yeah, I actually like it. And if the render is accurate, it looks like it will have front-facing stereo speakers. I wouldn't mind if the Pixel 3 looked like this.
  • +1
  • Not bad, actually. In fact, if it means they're committing to keeping great stereo speakers as their calling card, this is a very clever 'controversial' design. Hate the clear corners, of course, but as a provocation, they've hit a home run.
  • At least is symmetrical. Stupid, but symmetrical.
  • Weird
  • Hated it! - Men on Film
  • FFS, just...fill in the rest with a black bar. Having a cut-out on a phone is pointless and stupid. Is anyone really asking for this? Does anyone really enjoy having a notch like that? If I had it, I'd be liable to download an app that overlays black bars across to fill in the notch area.
  • The ridiculous notch = no buy!
  • But ...what if there were 2 of them? :P
  • I like it actually.
  • Being symmetrical it actually looks a whole lot better. Perfect place for a fingerprint sensor too and I bet someone does that soon
  • That would have been a great looking phone if it would have had full width top and bottom bezels as thick as those notches. Now it just looks stupid and will be very annoying watching full screen video.
  • Did I wander on to The Onion by mistake?
  • Second notch is ridiculous, just like the glass edges...
  • Just when I thought I saw it all.😂😂😂
  • Might look better than a single notch but it's still idiotic and not needed.
  • At least it's balanced. Next month it will be four notches!
I'm glad to see the U12 does not have any notch, but it does have dual cameras front and back, 8 gigs of RAM, Quickcharge 4.0, AND wireless charging. Photos are up on phone arena...
  • I'm not into symmetry. Seven notches or no buy.
  • The notches will multiply until we are back to having full size bezels at the top and bottom of the screen....
  • For fu¢ks sake ZTE smh 🤦🏽‍♂️
Well, at least it's symmetrical but it would also have been symmetrical and better looking with just top and bottom bezels.
I blame all you idiots that complain about bezels all the time.
  • I'm not bothered by the notches but those glass wings on the corners are stupid. Surely those will be sanded off in the final product. Just a concept piece. Maybe they think this is humorous but its a little late for April fools day.
  • The only thing worse than one notch is two notches.
  • "ZTE's apparently making a phone with two notches because of course they are" Ok.. that actually made me laugh. Good one.
  • ..you know, ...I don't.. I don't HATE it.
Very odd I find myself thinking that way, as I am not a notch fan. But it's symmetrical, and the glass edges are at least unique. I won't buy it, but I admit it is interesting.
  • Trying to keep an open mind but I want to see it in person. More worried about the raised glass than the notches, however.
  • I would like notches on the sides of the screen as well. If possible, it would be great to have edge to edge notches on the top, bottom, and sides of the phone. ;)
  • By saying the screen has a notch is looking at it the wrong way....glass half empty... Think of it more like they have turned the previously wasted space on the front of your phone that normally just absolutely nothing into something that could bE used to our advantage.. like putting system icons or notifications that to allow more content on the screen.... Watching video or playing games etc should just black out those spaces to not impact the experience... Why people are so angry about " the notch" is beyond me..
  • It looks better than a lonely top notch. That on its own just looks weird but being symmetrical with a bottom notch actually makes more sense and looks infinitely better. Don't get me wrong though, given the choice I'd have no notch at all.
  • I like it. Especially the fact that the second notch houses a front facing speaker. Kinda hoping this is what the pixel 3 will look like.
  • With two front facing stereo speakers I'm thinking the raised corners are intended to amplify the Bass when the phone is placed on a flat surface.
  • If the Axon M saw the light of the day! Why doubt if the Iceberg shall?
  • After Android Authority's poll on the notch, if ZTE still went ahead and do this, I wish them good luck in getting users. As for front speaker design, there are designs that worked into the frame of the screen. That would eliminate the need for the notches. What's left is the front facing camera.
  • "Yo, Dawg, I heard you like notches!..."
  • I like the look of the glass corners, but not the twin notches.
  • I can understand using bezel space at the top of the phone so the notification bar can be moved up but what is the extra screen used for at the bottom?
  • I'm not a big fan of the notch, but it does not take away from the screen size....it makes the app screen size bigger by just a little bit; the notifications are now just higher, flanking the camera and ear piece. Same thing for the bottom of the screen. Personal preference if you like the look or not.
If manufacturers give us the option of blacking out the background of the notifications, the only issue becomes a smaller area for notifications to be displayed........I think that should be the real discussion point.
